"Intelligence plus character
— that is the goal of true
education."
- Martin Luther King Jr.
This line by Martin
Luther King Junior
aptly sums up the
work done by Hong Kong
Academy (HKA) based in
its namesake city.
Coming about in the year
2000, the institution with a
difference that professes to
create a joyful, dynamic
learning community that
provides rigorous
international education
characterized by mutual
bene it and support, Hong
Kong Academy is an
educational leader in its
category that has been
empowering learners to
pursue their chosen path
towards individual
excellence by fostering
creativity, communication
and problem-solving skills.
Thus, the academy helps
its students develop an
ever-evolving
understanding of
themselves and the
changing world around
them, leading to them
engaging in responsible
actions motivated by them
interests, strengths and
ongoing re lections.
To this end, HKA is
committed to maintaining a
diverse, collaborative and
captivating learning
environment in which
students become adaptable,
con ident and tolerant,
equipping them for a
sustainable future at all
times.
Story of Excellence
Hong Kong Academy is the
brainchild of its founder-
duo Teresa Richman and
Ben Frankel, who had the
vision to create a non-pro it
international school to
provide an outstanding
international education in
Hong Kong SAR. They
wanted something
manageable and customi-
zable, which did not
intimidate parents and, on
the contrary, made them
feel at home with the
thought that they knew
everything and everyone in
the school.
Though the international
school ecosystem scene was
competitive and rife with
well-funded giants, the duo
wasn't deterred. It made
them all the more
committed as they tirelessly
navigated the government
permission system and the
school registration-related
paperwork while putting up
classrooms on HK Island,
de ining the curriculum, and
hiring skilled teachers.
It all fell in place in August
of 2000, with HKA opening
its doors to three students
on Stubbs Road in HK. In the
space of over two decades,
HKA has proliferated to over
four hundred delighted and
happy students.
Anyone with a wrong
notion of the words 'non-
pro it' ought to be at HKA,

An All-In-One Educational
Institute
HKA believes that students'
success ought to be de ined
by their interests, strengths
and ambitions. Towards
this, the school offers
hundreds of co-curricular
choices that extend and
enhance regular school
activity with a range of free-
of-charge options. The after-
school activities, winter and
summer programmes are
part of the co-curricular
programme and offer
various activities such as
sports, performing arts,
secondary school clubs and
weekend activities. All of
these provide students with
a range of opportunities to
build on existing skills, try
new interests, compete,
create and grow.
What truly takes centre-
stage at HKA is the
integration of science,
technology, engineering,
arts and mathematics
(STEAM) across subject
areas that prepares
students to thrive in a wide
range of ields. STEAM is
integrated into the
curriculum as well as being
offered through the co-
curricular programme.
STEAM at HKA happens
early, right from Primary
School, where it is
integrated into each unit of
inquiry, encouraging
students to connect and
apply investigative and
problem-solving skills
across subject areas.
Moving into Secondary
School, students develop
their fact-gathering,
problem-de ining,
opportunity-sensing, and
risk-analyzing skills through
individual and collaborative
projects. HKA teachers are
experienced specialists that
teach, encourage and
support students from start
to end. The school's award-
winning campus with its
fully-equipped laboratories,
design technology
workshops and visual art
studios also offer students
opportunities galore for
creative hands-on digital
experiences.
School counsellors and
teachers support students
throughout the day in
navigating and developing
social skills in various
situations. They challenge,
motivate, educate and
support each child to
achieve their fullest
potential socially,
emotionally and
academically in accordance
with their individual
abilities and learning styles.
The school also inspires
students to take responsible
ecological and
conservation-driven action
encouraging them to see
themselves as caretakers of
the planet and its
communities.
HKA offers a combination of
three certi ication pathways
for students. In addition to
the credit-based HKA

Success Saga
The school has found
success in other ways. While
the pandemic brought new
challenges in developing
children's social skills and
abilities in social con lict
resolution and
collaboration, HKA, while
being mindful of the lack of
social interaction, saw this
as an opportunity to do
things differently, like snack
chat sessions facilitated by a
teacher online where
students ate their snack
online while chatting and
playing games thus using

the opportunity to connect.
Having found success
with their unique
approaches, HKA's plans
through 2025 include:
• Elevating global
citizenship and the
importance of
contributing to the
community
• Supporting individuals to
become leaders with the
capacity to innovate and
develop capacities in
others
• Expanding opportunities
for learners to be curious,
courageous and self-
directed
• Empowering learners to
thrive in a complex,
volatile and ambiguous
future
An authority in education
whose unique initiatives
have made the right cut,
HKA advises students
everywhere to enjoy school
life and remain open to new
experiences. In an
international school, they
say students have the
opportunity to get to know
people from a range of
backgrounds and
experiences which can help
widen their perspectives
and provide them with
insights into what it means
to be a part of a global
community.
"We encourage students to
think about how they can
grow as learners and as
people by embracing
diversity and expanding
their perspectives on
themselves and their world."
“
Being a part of a dynamic and
diverse learning community has
taught me how collaboration,
responsible action, and reflection
can surface the strengths of all
members of our community.
“
I loved being part of
the HKA community for twelve

personal and societal
development. Parents,
teachers, and communities
highly value academic
excellence and view
education as a pathway to
success and social mobility.
As a result, students are
motivated to excel
academically, and they often
receive strong support from
their families and
communities.
High Expectations and
Rigorous Curriculum
Asian educational systems
typically have rigorous
academic curricula that set
high expectations for
students. The focus on core
subjects, such as
mathematics, science, and
language, prepares students
for advanced studies and
specialized ields. The high
standards set by the
curriculum challenge
students to strive for
excellence and mastery of
the subject matter.
Dedicated Teachers
Asia boasts a pool of
dedicated and highly
quali ied teachers who are
committed to their
students' success. These
educators often receive
extensive training and
professional development,
which enhances their
teaching skills and keeps
them up-to-date with the
latest pedagogical practices.
The Asian Advantage
26
Educational leaders also
play a crucial role in
creating conducive learning
environments,
implementing effective
policies, and fostering a
culture of continuous
improvement in schools and
institutions.
Supportive Learning
Environments
Many Asian educational
institutions prioritize
creating supportive learning
environments that promote
student engagement and
well-being. Schools often
have well-equipped
classrooms, libraries, and
laboratories to facilitate
effective learning. Moreover,
extracurricular activities,
sports, and cultural events
are integrated into the
curriculum to develop
students' social skills and
creativity.
Strong Parental
Involvement
Parents in Asian countries
are actively involved in their
children's education. They
participate in parent-
teacher conferences,
monitor their children's
academic progress, and
provide additional support
at home. This collaborative
approach between parents
and educators reinforces
students' commitment to
their studies and overall
academic success.
Strategies Employed by
Educational Systems –
Early Childhood Education
Many Asian countries invest
in early childhood
education, recognizing its
importance in laying a
strong foundation for
lifelong learning. High-
quality preschool programs
focus on developing
cognitive, social, and
emotional skills, ensuring
that children enter formal
schooling well-prepared for
academic challenges.
Examination Systems
Some Asian countries
employ rigorous
examination systems that
play a signi icant role in
evaluating students'
knowledge and skills. These
exams act as a motivator for
students to study diligently
and excel academically.
While these systems have
been criticized for their
high-stress levels, they also
encourage discipline and
academic focus among
students.
Tutoring and
Supplementary Education
In some Asian countries,
private tutoring and
supplementary education
are widespread. Known as
'shadow education,' these
additional learning
opportunities outside of
school hours provide
students with extra support
and reinforcement of their
academic subjects. While it
can add pressure, it also
contributes to improved
academic performance.
Emphasis on STEM
Education
Asia places a strong
emphasis on STEM
(Science, Technology,
Engineering, and
Mathematics) education.
The focus on these
disciplines is driven by the
need to prepare a skilled
workforce to meet the
demands of the global
economy, particularly in the
ields of technology and
innovation.
Impact of High Academic
Achievements in Asia –
Global Competitiveness
Asia's strong academic
performance has
positioned the region as a
major player in the global
knowledge economy. High
academic achievements
contribute to a skilled and
innovative workforce,
making Asian countries
attractive destinations for
foreign investment and
multinational corporations
seeking talent.
Increased Access to Higher
Education
High academic
achievements in Asia have
expanded access to higher
education, creating more
opportunities for students
to pursue advanced degrees
and specialized ields. This
has resulted in a better-
educated population and
contributed to overall
human capital development
in the region.
Cultural In luence on
Learning
The success of Asian
educational systems has
attracted international
attention, leading to interest
in adopting some of the
strategies and practices
employed in the region.
Educators and policymakers
worldwide seek to learn
from Asian experiences and
adapt effective approaches
to improve their own
educational systems.
Fostering Innovation and
Research
A culture of academic
excellence in Asia has
spurred research and
innovation in various ields.
This has led to
groundbreaking discoveries
and advancements in
science, technology,
medicine, and other
disciplines, bene itting
societies both within and
beyond Asia's borders.
The impact of these
achievements extends
beyond the region,
contributing to global
competitiveness, fostering
innovation, and in luencing
educational practices
worldwide. As Asia
continues to evolve and
embrace new challenges,
the commitment to
academic excellence
remains a driving force for
progress, development, and
societal transformation. By
nurturing a well-educated
and skilled workforce, Asia
is well-positioned to play a
vital role in shaping the
future of the global
knowledge economy.

and changing societal needs,
the ield of education is also
undergoing a
transformative phase. In
Asia, a region known for its
rich history and diverse
cultures, the future of
learning is being shaped by
innovative approaches and
emerging trends. These
developments are not only
improving access to
education but also
revolutionizing the ways
people learn and acquire
knowledge.
Lets explore some of the
key innovations and trends
that are shaping the future
of learning in Asia.

The Education View July 2023
By introducing elements
like challenges, rewards,
and competition, gami ied
learning environments
make the learning process
more enjoyable and
immersive. In Asia, various
educational platforms and
apps use gami ication
techniques to enhance
language learning, math
skills, and even soft skills
like communication and
teamwork.
Experiential learning is
another trend gaining
traction in Asia. This
approach emphasizes
learning through direct
experiences and active
engagement, encouraging
students to apply
theoretical knowledge to
real-world situations.
Immersive experiences,
ield trips, and practical
projects foster critical
thinking and problem-
solving skills, preparing
learners for the challenges
of the modern workforce.
Arti icial Intelligence and
Personalized Learning
Arti icial Intelligence (AI) is
revolutionizing the
education landscape in Asia,
presenting opportunities for
more personalized and
ef icient learning
experiences. AI-powered
learning platforms can
analyse student data, track
progress, and identify areas
where additional support is
needed. This data-driven
approach enables educators
to tailor instructional
content and learning
pathways to address
individual strengths and
weaknesses, maximizing
each student's potential.
Chatbots and virtual
tutors are also being
deployed to provide instant
support and answer
students' questions,
enhancing the learning
experience beyond
traditional classroom
settings. AI can assist in
grading assessments and
generating insights to
inform educators' teaching
strategies, optimizing the
overall learning process.
Blended Learning Models
Blended learning, a hybrid
approach that combines
online and face-to-face
instruction, is gaining
popularity in Asia as it
offers a lexible and well-
rounded educational
experience. This model
allows for a mix of self-
paced digital learning and
in-person interactions with
teachers and peers.
Students can access course
materials and complete
assignments online, while
still bene iting from
personalized guidance and
feedback from educators.
Emphasis on Soft Skills
and Future-Ready
Competencies
As the job market becomes
increasingly competitive
and industries evolve, there
is a growing emphasis on
nurturing soft skills and
future-ready competencies
in Asia's education
systems. While academic
knowledge remains crucial,
employers are seeking
candidates who possess
strong communication,
problem-solving,
adaptability, and
collaboration skills.
In response to this
demand, educational
institutions are integrating
soft skill development into
their curricula. Team-based
projects, communication
workshops, and leadership
training are becoming
common components of the
learning experience. By
equipping students with a
well-rounded skill set, Asian
educators are preparing
learners to thrive in diverse
professional settings and
contribute effectively to the
workforce of tomorrow.
Lifelong Learning and
Upskilling
The concept of lifelong
learning is gaining
momentum in Asia as
individuals recognize the
need to adapt and acquire
new skills throughout their
careers. Rapid technological
advancements and changes
in the job market require
continuous upskilling to
remain relevant and
competitive.
Multicultural and
Multilingual Education
Asia's rich cultural diversity
presents a unique
opportunity for promoting
multicultural and
multilingual education.
Embracing cultural diversity
and encouraging language
learning fosters mutual
understanding, tolerance,
and global citizenship
among students.
Bilingual and multilingual
education programs are
becoming more prevalent,
enabling students to
become pro icient in their
native language while also
learning additional
languages. This prepares
learners to thrive in
international environments
and communicate
effectively across borders.
The Path to Progressive
Future
The future of learning in
Asia is being shaped by a
range of innovations and
trends that are reshaping
traditional educational
practices. Technology
integration, gami ication, AI,
and personalized learning
are revolutionizing the
learning experience, making
it more accessible and
engaging for learners across
the region. Blended learning
models are breaking down
barriers to education, while
an increased focus on soft
skills and future-ready
competencies is preparing
students for the challenges
of the modern workforce.
As Asia continues to
embrace multiculturalism,
multilingual education
fosters understanding and
promotes global citizenship.
Additionally, the growing
emphasis on sustainability
education is nurturing
environmentally conscious
individuals who can
contribute to a greener and
more sustainable future.
With these advancements
and trends, Asia is poised to
create a dynamic and
adaptive learning ecosystem
that equips individuals with
the skills and knowledge
needed to thrive in an ever-
changing world. By
embracing innovation and
investing in education, the
region is building a
foundation for progress and
prosperity for generations
to come. T H E

Enabling Creativity to Flourish in a Child's Growing Years
Creativity is not just

about learning critical social
skills that will serve
children well throughout
their lives. At The Grange
Institution (TGI), other
than academic excellence,
students learn to navigate
relationships, negotiate,
compromise, and resolve
con licts—all vital skills that
will help them succeed in
school and beyond.
At TGI, learning goes
beyond just academic
excellence; the school

Relieving Academic Stress
In Asia, the education
system is known for its
rigidity and emphasis on
academic excellence. This
focus on academic
performance has often led
Features
to high levels of stress and
pressure on students. The
Grange's difference is a
renewed focus on creating a
more holistic education
system that considers
students' mental, emotional,
and social development.
In 2019, The Grange
became the irst school in
Singapore to combine the
Cambridge Primary
Curriculum and the
International Primary
Curriculum (IPC). This
brings together a cohesive
balance of a rigorous and
comprehensive programme
through the widely-
recognized Cambridge
curriculum and the
thematic, inquiry-based
curriculum of the IPC.
In addition, The Grange is
also one of the few schools
to include specialist
subjects of Music, Art,
Technology, Languages and
Physical Education as part
of its fees and timetable,
making learning a truly
holistic experience. This
enabled The Grange to
deliver the skills and
knowledge students need to
become successful and
responsible global citizens.
One of the key principles
is the use of innovative and
engaging teaching methods.
This approach moves away
from the traditional
teacher-led teaching style
and incorporates occasional
student-led learning
experiences that stimulate
the love for learning among
students. Another
important aspect is the
focus on character
development.
Educators in Asia are
realizing the importance of
developing well-rounded
individuals who, other than
simply academics, need to
possess a strong sense of
social responsibility and
moral values. The Grange
aims to nurture their
students to achieve future-
focused Cre8tors-in-
Action© learning outcomes.
As 'Cre8tors-in-Action©,'
students are challenged and
exposed to situations which
require them to think
creatively, experiment, be
innovative, and ind
solutions. They learn to
develop resilience and
adaptability to thrive in the
changing world, ready for
the future.
Keeping up with the
Competition
Singapore is a very
competitive arena for
international education.
There are 60+ international
schools, so making a mark
for the school has been its
greatest challenge. Covid
posed a huge challenge to
its operations. Being a
school where the majority
of customers come from
overseas, the closing of
borders impacted the school
in ways it did not imagine.
However, the team rallied
and continued to focus and
develop competencies
during the two years.

but it also prepares them for
the future.
Preparing Students for
Fast-changing World
The school has a truly
international enrolment,
but its core education
program is based on what it
believes is best for students
to be prepared for the
requirements of a fast-
changing world. Being the
irst international school in
Singapore to offer a
combination of both the
Cambridge Primary and
International Primary
Curriculum (IPC), this novel
approach helps The Grange
Institution effectively equip
students with the right
aptitude for academic and
personal success in their
learning journey. The
renowned Cambridge
Primary Curriculum builds
strong academic
foundations in English,
Mathematics and Science.
IPC engage students in
different thematic Units of
Learning designed to appeal
to their interests and help
them to learn more about
the world around them.

in the curriculum. Not only
did it survive the pandemic,
but school numbers also
grew by over 50 per cent
during the period. The
school expanded from just

a Preschool in late-2021.
Maintaining a Strong
Student-School
Communication
The school responds to the
interests of students. It
conducts bi-yearly surveys
to understand what co-
curricular activities
students are interested in. It
recently introduced Chess
and Table Tennis as part of
its offerings.
The Grange is also taking
an important step towards
sustainability by involving
students in the redesign of
school uniforms. It believes
that students have a
valuable perspective on
what makes a comfortable
and functional uniform. By
involving students in this
process, it hopes to create a
uniform that not only meets
their needs but also aligns
with the school's commit-
ment to sustainability.
Providing Holistic
Education
STEM is included as an
integral aspect of the
International Primary
Curriculum. STEM
education is no longer a
novelty and has been
around for over 20 years.
The Grange includes
specialist subjects of Music,
Art, Technology, Languages
and Physical Education as
part of its fees and
programme.
It is the school's aim to
provide a holistic education
that integrates these
specialized subjects into
every aspect of its
curriculum. This approach
not only helps students to
develop critical thinking
and problem-solving skills,
“

Staying True to the Vision
and Mission
The Grange, in the context
of Singapore, is not

  • 5. Letter from the Editor Education is the key to bringing transparency and accountability in society. It is our collective responsibility to get our children educated. - Kailash Satyarthi A sia has long been renowned for its world-class education system. Institutes in Asian countries have consistently ranked in the global education rankings. With a strong emphasis on academic excellence, holistic development, and innovation, international schools in Asia have become models of educational excellence worldwide. In our latest edition, 'The Most Admired International Schools in Asia, 2023,' The Education View has discussed a diverse range of international educational institutions from this region. We have also highlighted the noteworthy programs, initiatives, and unique features that set these schools apart, making them stand out in Asia's competitive educational landscape. Asia has been at the forefront of educational innovation, constantly seeking new ways to enhance the learning experience for its students. Additionally, the introduction of personalized learning approaches has revolutionized its education system. By tailoring instruction to individual student needs, Asian educators are fostering a more student-centered approach, allowing students to progress at their own pace and focus on their speci ic interests and strengths. These factors have positioned Asia as a global leader in educational excellence and have equipped its students with the necessary skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world. We hope that this edition will serve as a valuable resource for parents, students, educators, and anyone interested in gaining insights into the best schools in Asia. We encourage you to explore the pro iles of these schools and learn about their unique offerings.
