Aquatic macrophytes functions in several ways in water bodies, they are critical to Niger Delta inland waters because they enhance the physical structure of the habitat which serves as living space for small aquatic animals and play a vital role in fisheries production. Macrophytes play an important role in the aquatic environment but unfortunately very little attention is being directed towards the conservation of these aquatic resources and they can get out of control and create problems when they are not properly managed. This paper examines common aquatic macrophytes in Niger Delta in Nigeria with emphasis on benefits, problems and also proffers best practices for adequately managing the macrrophytes in Niger Delta inland waters.
Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) of Bivalves in Northwestern Bohol, PhilippinesAI Publications
Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) is a measure of status of marine resource in a given area. In this study, bivalve fishery information was gathered using the self-structured questionnaire. There were 61 respondents who were the registered fishermen of Calape, Tubigon and Clarin. Among the three towns it was Clarin where highest mean CPUE was observed with 1.2kg/hr/man. This was followed by Calape with 0.8kg/hr/man and lowest mean CPUE was recorded in Tubigon with 0.6kg/hr/man. High CPUE value means that there are still enough bivalve resources in the area and lowest CPUE means that these resources are endangered. Considering that, the result of this study showed that there is a need to regulate the collection of bivalves with lower wild stocks to avoid loss of these natural resources.
Species Diversity of Polychaete Worms from Some Selected Freshwater Environme...ijtsrd
The number of freshwater species in the world is quite small when compared with the vast number of marine species. There are several marine forms which are penetrated brackish and freshwater but remain unable to breed there while others have adapted sufficiently to remain for their entire life span. Polychaetes are commonly found in Indian estuaries, among 152 species recorded, 119 species from the east coast, 10 species from both east and west coasts. A total of 8 species were identified along Thenkasi District. Macro benthic polychaetes highlighted the presence of indicator species at all stations. Most of the benthic studies explored that Nereididae is the dominant species. The polychaetes observed throughout this study were a similar size and this is a clear indication of extreme disturbance imposed on the sediment. The present findings show macrobenthic polychaete diversity rich all along the Thenkasi District of Tamil Nadu. S. Balasubramanian | T. Citarasu | S. Lazarus | A. Marcusenius senegalensis (Steindachner, 1870) is the dominant mormyrid in Niger River in Northern-Benin where this fish species constitutes an important component of artisanal fisheries. The current study documented the reproductive biology of M. senegalensis in order to contribute to management and sustainable exploitation. Monthly samplings were conducted between February 2015 and July 2016 using gillnets, cast net, and seine. Males dominated the population with a sex ratio of 1:0.96 in favor of males. Sizes at first sexual maturity were 167.89 mm-TL for males and 163.81 mm-TL for females. Monthly gonadosomatic index (GSI) averaged 0.12 ± 0.09 for males and 1.32 ± 1.56 for female and peaks recorded indicated that spawning occured from June to September. Fecundity were moderate to low (844 – 12,643 eggs) and significantly (p < 0.05) increased with total length and body weight. Thespecies showed egg diameters varying between 0.21 and to 1.77 mm and ovaries comprised oocytes at all stages of maturation indicating that M. senegalensis displayed a multi-spawning behavior. Marcuseniussenegalensis exhibited a demographic strategy between r and K, yet more inclined towards K-selected strategy. In Niger River, reproduction grounds were being severely degraded affecting recruitment and stocks. The current findings are valuable data to design a species management scheme that should includes spawning ground protection, species conservation and valorization and fisheries/aquaculture development.

Abstract- Prosopis juliflora, popularly known as Mathenge in Kenya, is an invasive short shrub spread in drylands of Africa, Asia, Australia and in other parts of the world. The shrub was introduced in Kenya in the 1970s with an aim of afforesting the arid and semi-arid areas to curb desertification. In the formative stages, the results were positive but this did not last for long. It spread so rapidly becoming a menace to ASAL pastoralists prompting its declaration as a harmful weed in Kenya under the Suppression of Noxious Weeds Act (CAP 325) in 2008. Well, in some parts of the world, the shrub is cultivated. The study sought to examine the usefulness of P. juliflora (referred to as Prosopis in this study) in Kenyan ASALs and to determine whether it is a friend or a foe plant? Interviews were conducted to fifty (50) pastoralist respondents who were selected using simple random sampling method from Garissa Sub County. Secondary sources were also reviewed. The study established that the economy of ASALs revolves around livestock rearing, which in turn depends on the water and pasture. Prosopis had colonized the grazing land reducing the carrying capacity of the ASAL rangelands. Cases of ulceration of livestock teeth and mouth, serious injuries on both livestock and humans associated with Prosopis thorns, and loss of livestock were reported. On the other hand, various uses of Prosopis were identified and included: provision of fuelwood and charcoal, keeping of bees, control of soil erosion by wind and water. In addition, Prosopis was used in formulation of livestock fodder, making of drinking juices and cakes, production of biomass energy in Kenya. Negative attitude towards Prosopis by the pastoralists was identified as a hindrance to its use. The study established that with suitable management, capacity building and attitude change of the pastoralists on utilization of the shrub, Prosopis can be harnessed as a useful resource in the ASALs.

Reptile Diversity in Mt. Matutum Protected Landscape, South Cotabato, Philipp...Innspub Net
Reptiles are highly diversewith high percentage of endemism in the Philippines. However, reptile diversity in Mindanao, the second largest island in the country,is poorly known. To determine the species richness, diversity, endemism and conservation status of reptiles, this study was conducted from August to December 2013in six sampling sites of Mt. Matutum Protected Landscape (MMPL), South Cotabato.Cruising methodwasdone in the six sampling sites of MMPL. Paleontological Statistics Software Package (PAST) version 3.06 was used to determine the biodiversity indices, similarity index, and Kruskal-Wallis test. Thirteen species of reptiles belonging to five families and 11 genera with percentage endemism of46.15% were documented. High species diversity of reptiles with more or less even distribution was recorded in MMPL. Among the sampled sites, sampling site 1, a disturbed lowland dipterocarp forest had the highest species diversityand endemism.Sphenomorphusvariegatus was the most abundant species. Tropidophoruspartelloi, the only Mindanao Island endemic species was only found in the disturbed and undisturbed montane forests. Most of the documented species were under the Least Concern status. Bray-Curtis cluster analysis showed that sites 2 and 5 had the highest similarity percentage (68%) while Kruskal-Wallis test showed no significant difference between samples in disturbedand undisturbed sites. Threats to the reptiles of MMPL were observed to be the conversion of forest to farmland and hunting thus implying the need for protection of habitats and conservation of species in MMPL.

Nutritional Diagnosis of "Hass" Avocado (Persea Americana Mill.) Soil Fertili...Agriculture Journal IJOEAR
Abstract— In recent years, the avocado has become an important fruit species in Mexico, where it is distributed in six states, among which there is the state of Morelos. For the study, two agrohabitats with eight-year-old avocado orchards located in Tepoztlán, Morelos were selected. Soil fertility of the orchards was evaluated, as well as the quality of irrigation water, and the nutritional state of the leaves; sufficiency ranges were calculated, and the Deviation from Optimum Percentage method was used to interpret the results. Soils and the quality of irrigation water showed different chemical characteristics that had an influence on nutrient concentration in avocado leaves. The Deviation from Optimum Percentage (DOP) method allowed us to identify requirements of N, Zn, Mn, Fe and B in agrohabitat one, and deficiencies of P, K, Ca, S, Zn and Mn in agrohabitat two, which must be taken into account to implement a fertilization program in the studied orchards.
Benefits of biodiversity includes direct, indirect consumptive use values, productive usevalues, social value, ethical and moral values, aesthetic value, option and environmental services, cultural and spiritual values are covered in this presentation.

This initial research effort was conducted to identify the beetle species in five selected barangays of Catarman, Northern Samar, and describe the environmental factors that affect the presence of beetles in the study area. It used the descriptive method of research, with the purposive sampling technique as the sampling procedure utilized.Due to limitations of the researcher, a total of only seventeen 17 beetle species, belonging to eleven 11 families, were found present in different sampling sites. The most abundant of the beetle species individual was Harmonia axyridis, constituting 76.14 of the total number of beetles in the study area, while the least abundant were Alaus sp., and Diphucephala sp., each with only one 1 individual present, accounting for a relative abundance of only 0.46 . The air and soil temperature range between 27oC to 29oC. Grasses, trees, shrubs, and herbs were the common vegetation present in the study sites where beetles were found. This implies that environmental factors were conducive for the beetles to thrive in the area. The presence of different beetle species indicates the study area has a diverse beetle fauna, albeit it is only a small fraction of the total beetle species listed in the country. It is imperative that conservation efforts should be strengthened by the LGU in order to conserve not only the beetle population in the study area, but other organisms, both flora and fauna, as well. Mangrove ecology and species distribution along the Gorai Creek of Mumbai coa...AI Publications
The extensive mangrove forest of Gorai Creek, Mumbai coast, has recently seen substantial deterioration. The results of a study on mangrove diversity conducted in Gorai Creek on the Mumbai coast from June 2017 to May 2018 are presented here. During the course of the study, twelve species of mangroves from five families and eight genera were identified in each of the three study locations along the creek. Avicennia marina accounted for 13.44% of the Gorai creek marshes, confirming its predominance. Sonneratia alba, Avicennia officinalis, Rhizophora apiculata, Bruguiera cylindrica, Kandelia candel, and Acanthus ilicifolius are among the mangrove species found in the estuarine embayment, with other species strewn around. A diverse range of species, including endangered migratory birds and herpetofauna, can be found in these mangrove environments. Mangroves have been observed to have narrowed in density with time, and it is critical to begin conservation efforts as speedily as humanly possible.

booklet on wildlife.Plants from the Sterculiaceae family are herbs, shrubs, trees, or climbers. Some species are glabrous while others have stellate hairs or peltate scales. The leaves spiral or whorled, and can be either simple or palmately compound. Their margins may be entire, lobed, or toothed with 3-5 veins originating from the base of the leaf. Stipules are present but inconspicuous. The inflorescences are axillary paniculate cymes or cauliflorous fascicles. Flowers are functionally unisexual, exhibiting radial symmetry, and can be solitary or paired. In some cases, the petals may be minute, scale-like, or even absent. Male flowers with prominent stalks that carry both stamens and carpels called androgynophore. Anthers dithecal or with two chambers. Fruit are apocarpous and takes the form of a loculicidal capsule, or rarely a berry or samara.
Diversity and dispersion patterns of echinoderms in Babanlagan, Talisayan, Mi...Angelo Mark Walag
Echinoderms are fundamentally good indicators of health and status of coralline communities in marine waters. In this study, the diversity and distribution of echinoderm species were determined in Babanlagan, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental. In total, 387 individuals were collected coming from classes Echinoidea, Holothuroidea, Asteroidea, and Ophiuroidea. The majority of individuals collected were Protoreaster nodusus, which is a good indicator of reef health while the least abundant echinoderm species was Acanthaster planci. The pattern of distribution of majority of echinoderms was a clumped distribution while the other groups followed regular/uniform distribution, which may be due to limited dispersal ability and availability and available food sources. Moderate species diversity was also observed and species were rather similar in abundance, shown by the evenness index. This suggests good marine health, even under the threat of gleaning activities, active fishing, and habitat destruction. It is recommended that follow-up studies are conducted especially regarding monitoring of echinoderm species, to further assess the health of the intertidal zone in Babanlagan, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental.
Mangroves are vital for healthy coastal ecosystems in many regions of the world and research and studies are revealing the unique importance of these habitats to the planet. The Impact of Digital Media on the Decentralization of Power and the Erosion ...ijtsrd
The impact of digital media on the distribution of power and the weakening of traditional gatekeepers has gained considerable attention in recent years. The adoption of digital technologies and the internet has resulted in declining influence and power for traditional gatekeepers such as publishing houses and news organizations. Simultaneously, digital media has facilitated the emergence of new voices and players in the media industry. Digital medias impact on power decentralization and gatekeeper erosion is visible in several ways. One significant aspect is the democratization of information, which enables anyone with an internet connection to publish and share content globally, leading to citizen journalism and bypassing traditional gatekeepers. Another aspect is the disruption of conventional media industry business models, as traditional organizations struggle to adjust to the decrease in advertising revenue and the rise of digital platforms. Alternative business models, such as subscription models and crowdfunding, have become more prevalent, leading to the emergence of new players. Overall, the impact of digital media on the distribution of power and the weakening of traditional gatekeepers has brought about significant changes in the media landscape and the way information is shared. Further research is required to fully comprehend the implications of these changes and their impact on society. Design Simulation and Hardware Construction of an Arduino Microcontroller Bas...ijtsrd
This study primarily focuses on the design of a high side buck converter using an Arduino microcontroller. The converter is specifically intended for use in DC DC applications, particularly in standalone solar PV systems where the PV output voltage exceeds the load or battery voltage. To evaluate the performance of the converter, simulation experiments are conducted using Proteus Software. These simulations provide insights into the input and output voltages, currents, powers, and efficiency under different state of charge SoC conditions of a 12V,70Ah rechargeable lead acid battery. Additionally, the hardware design of the converter is implemented, and practical data is collected through operation, monitoring, and recording. By comparing the simulation results with the practical results, the efficiency and performance of the designed converter are assessed. The findings indicate that while the buck converter is suitable for practical use in standalone PV systems, its efficiency is compromised due to a lower output current. Sustainable Energy by Paul A. Adekunte | Matthew N. O. Sadiku | Janet O. Sadikuijtsrd
Energy becomes sustainable if it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Some of the definitions of sustainable energy include the considerations of environmental aspects such as greenhouse gas emissions, social, and economic aspects such as energy poverty. Generally far more sustainable than fossil fuel are renewable energy sources such as wind, hydroelectric power, solar, and geothermal energy sources. Worthy of note is that some renewable energy projects, like the clearing of forests to produce biofuels, can cause severe environmental damage. The sustainability of nuclear power which is a low carbon source is highly debated because of concerns about radioactive waste, nuclear proliferation, and accidents. The switching from coal to natural gas has environmental benefits, including a lower climate impact, but could lead to delay in switching to more sustainable options. “Carbon capture and storage” can be built into power plants to remove the carbon dioxide CO2 emissions, but this technology is expensive and has rarely been implemented. Leading non renewable energy sources around the world is fossil fuels, coal, petroleum, and natural gas. Nuclear energy is usually considered another non renewable energy source, although nuclear energy itself is a renewable energy source, but the material used in nuclear power plants is not. The paper addresses the issue of sustainable energy, its attendant benefits to the future generation, and humanity in general. Paul A. Adekunte | Matthew N. O. Sadiku | Janet O. Concepts for Sudan Survey Act Implementations Executive Regulations and Stand...ijtsrd
This paper aims to outline the executive regulations, survey standards, and specifications required for the implementation of the Sudan Survey Act, and for regulating and organizing all surveying work activities in Sudan. The act has been discussed for more than 5 years. The Land Survey Act was initiated by the Sudan Survey Authority and all official legislations were headed by the Sudan Ministry of Justice till it was issued in 2022. The paper presents conceptual guidelines to be used for the Survey Act implementation and to regulate the survey work practice, standardizing the field surveys, processing, quality control, procedures, and the processes related to survey work carried out by the stakeholders and relevant authorities in Sudan. The conceptual guidelines are meant to improve the quality and harmonization of geospatial data and to aid decision making processes as well as geospatial information systems. The established comprehensive executive regulations will govern and regulate the implementation of the Sudan Survey Geomatics Act in all surveying and mapping practices undertaken by the Sudan Survey Authority SSA and state local survey departments for public or private sector organizations. The targeted standards and specifications include the reference frame, projection, coordinate systems, and the guidelines and specifications that must be followed in the field of survey work, processes, and mapping products. In the last few decades, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of geomatics activities and measurements on the Earths surface in space and time, together with observing and mapping the changes. In such cases, data must be captured promptly, standardized, and obtained with more accuracy and specified in much detail. The paper will also highlight the current situation in Sudan, the degree to which survey standards are used, the problems encountered, and the errors that arise from not using the standards and survey specifications. Towards the Implementation of the Sudan Interpolated Geoid Model Khartoum Sta...ijtsrd
The discussions between ellipsoid and geoid have invoked many researchers during the recent decades, especially during the GNSS technology era, which had witnessed a great deal of development but still geoid undulation requires more investigations. To figure out a solution for Sudans local geoid, this research has tried to intake the possibility of determining the geoid model by following two approaches, gravimetric and geometrical geoid model determination, by making use of GNSS leveling benchmarks at Khartoum state. The Benchmarks are well distributed in the study area, in which, the horizontal coordinates and the height above the ellipsoid have been observed by GNSS while orthometric heights were carried out using precise leveling. The Global Geopotential Model GGM represented in EGM2008 has been exploited to figure out the geoid undulation at the benchmarks in the study area. This is followed by a fitting process, that has been done to suit the geoid undulation data which has been computed using GNSS leveling data and geoid undulation inspired by the EGM2008. Two geoid surfaces were created after the fitting process to ensure that they are identical and both of them could be counted for getting the same geoid undulation with an acceptable accuracy. In this respect, statistical operation played an important role in ensuring the consistency and integrity of the model by applying cross validation techniques splitting the data into training and testing datasets for building the geoid model and testing its eligibility. The geometrical solution for geoid undulation computation has been utilized by applying straightforward equations that facilitate the calculation of the geoid undulation directly through applying statistical techniques for the GNSS leveling data of the study area to get the common equation parameters values that could be utilized to calculate geoid undulation of any position in the study area within the claimed accuracy. Both systems were checked and proved eligible to be used within the study area with acceptable accuracy which may contribute to solving the geoid undulation problem in the Khartoum area, and be further generalized to determine the geoid model over the entire country, and this could be considered in the future, for regional and continental geoid model. A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Musngi, et al,. (2005) reported that most taxonomic work in
macro fungi in the Philippines has focused on the general
descriptions of Basiodiomycota. Theyalsostated thatseveral
local researchers in the Philippines have tried to document
the different macro fungi that inhabitthemountainousareas
of the country. They described four species of Auricularia
species were noted as follows: rain tree (samenea Saman L.),
Coconut (cocos Nucifera L.), ipil-ipil (Leucaena Leucocephala
L.), mahogany (Sweitenia Mahogany L.), Mango (Manggifera
indica L.), and rubber tree (Hevea Brasiliensis L.). Among
these host trees, rain trees supported the highest number of
Auricularia species identified.
Macrofungi are those fungi that form large fructifications
visible without the aid of a microscope. This artificial but
convenient grouping is hereby defined to include fungal
families or genera where the majority of included species
produce fruit bodies greater than 1 centimeter in diameter.
Unlike micro fungi, which are made conspicuous by the
diseases, decay, and moulding they cause, macro fungi are
the ones most likely to either to be pollution indicators or
threaten beneficial species (Readhead, 1997)
METHODOLOGY
This study was conducted in the island of San Antonio,
Northern Samar. The Municipality of San Antonio is one of
the 24 municipalities of the provinceof Northern Samar. The
island is geographically located in the western section of the
province of Northern Samar. Going to San Antonio takes
about an hour and a half travel from Catarman via the
Municipality of Victoria by taking the bus going to the cities
of Tacloban or Calbayog. From the municipality of Victoria
one takes the motorboat to cross the channel to Dalupiri
Island, where the municipality of San Antonio is situated.
The mainland of Samar is located in the east, in the west is
the municipality of Capul, while on the northern part is San
Bernardino Strait and on its southern part, the Samar Sea
located. San Antonio is composed of 10 barangays, 3 of
which are within the town proper. The island is one of the
tourist destinations in Northern Samar, because of its
beautiful view, fresh air, white sand beaches, and crystal
clear water. The shape of this island is elongated; the
topography of San Antonio is alluvium-hill of lowrelief, level
to gently sloping. All barangays of San Antonio are situated
along the coast. Cebuano is the language spoken by 66% of
the residents, whileNenorteSamarnonlanguageisspoken by
34% of the population. The total land area of San Antonio is
2,828,10 hectares (Municipal Planning and Development
Council [MPDC], 2012)
Barangay Vinistahan is a sampling site located at the
northern end of the island of San Antonio facing the
municipality of Allen. Rice fields and grasslands where
different animals are found like goats, carabaos, and cows
are prominent land features.
Lagbangan Lake, a man man-made lake, is host to different
classes of birds. It can be reached through motorcycle or
motorboat. The main income of the residents here is copra
production and fishing. The total area is 225.87 hectares
(MPDC, 2012).
Barangay Dalupirit is a samplingsite located atthewestern
part of the island facing the municipality of Capul. It is a
rocky, mountainous area with grasslands used to pasture
animals such as cows and carabaos.Coconutplantaion isone
of the main sources of income through the production of
copra. Another source of income is fishing that contribute
much to their livelihood. The barangay can be reached
through motorcycle or biking from the town paper. It is
considered as the second largest barangay because its total
land area is 441.49 hectares (MPDC, 2012).
Barangay San Nicholas is a sampling sites next tobarangay
Dalupirit, which is more or less 1 kilometer away, and is
bounded by the cemetery of BarangayDalupirit. This placeis
also a rocky and woody, mountainous area with different
species of trees present which are the habitat of birds and
other living organisms. Fishing and copraproduction arethe
main sources of income of the residents. Its total land areais
190.96 hectares (MPDC, 2012).
Barangay Rizal is a sampling site next to Barangay Nicolas,
located also at the western part of the island of San Antonio
facingthe municipality of Capul. This barangay is not totally
big. An underground cave that contains fresh water is found
in an area which is an elevated portion of this barangay. This
serves as the sources of water for the residents and is also
the source of water for the other barangays through the
“Photovoltaic (solar) Pumping System”, a project of the
Philippine – Australian Community Assistance Program
(PACAP) and theNorthernSamarMulti-PurposeCooperative
(NSDWCC).
Barangay Manraya is a sampling site located at the
northwest part of the island next to Barangay Rizal, facing
the Municipality of San Vicente, and is located beside the
rocky mountainous area. It can be reached through
motorcycle within 15 minutes fromthetown proper. Fishing
and copra production are the main income of the residents
and its total land area is 365.16 hectares (MPDC, 2012).
Barangay Pillar is a sampling site located at the southern
end part of the island. Rice fields and lotsplanted todifferent
kinds of vegetables and fruits are situated here because of
the good quality of its soil. The government resource
conservation project in the municipality, the fish sanctuary,
is located here. Fishing, rice plating, and copra production
are the main livelihood of the residents, and its total land
area is 263.90 hectares (MPDC, 2012).
Barangay Burabod is the sampling site located at the
southeast part of the island facing the Municipality of San
Isidro, which is mountainous part of the island. Big houses
and other establishments are situated here because some
residents are businessmen.Fishingand copraproductionare
also the main livelihood of the residents and its total land
area is 175.44 hectares (MPDC, 2012).
Ward I, Ward II, and Ward III are the 3 sampling sites
located in the town proper, facing to the Municipality of
Victoria on the mainland of Samar.
Ward I is located at the north part of the town propernear to
Barangay Vinisitahan. The Catholic Church, market, and a
unfinished airport are situated here. Fishing and motorboat
building are the main sources of incomeof theresidents. The
total land area of Ward I is 299.53 hectares (MPDC, 2012).

Ward II is the center for businessinthetown properbecause
of different business establishments and big houses. The
total land area of Ward II is 72.75 hectares (MPDC, 2012)
Ward III is located at the south side of the town proper with
a road going to Barangay Burabod. Many beach resorts are
situated here. The District Hospitalislocatedhere andonthe
other side of the mountain, farms planted to different kinds
of vegetables and fruits are located. Fishing and copra
production are the main sources of income of the people
here, with a total land area of 465.88hectares(MPDC,2012).
During the collection, sample specimens wereremovedfrom
the substrate using a knife, but before picking the specimen,
a digital camera was used to photograph each specimen
directly from where it is located. Specimens were handled
carefully to avoid damage and destruction of useful
identification characteristics. The collected macro fungi
species was placed in closed containers so that important
features were not lost and they would not dry out. An
interview with some of the local residents of the study area
was conducted in order to gather information on the
economic uses of these macro fungi present in the locality.
Preservation of the specimen
The representative samples of macro fungi were preserved
either by drying or by immersing them in a 10% formalin
solution and 70% denatured alcohol. Drying under the sun
was done immediately for woody macro fungi specimens.
For the fleshly fungi which possess the ability of regaining
freshness when soaked in water, they were air driedat room
temperature; these were not dried directly under the sun
because rapid drying disfigures them. Normally, it takes 4
days or, often the time is extended, two weeks of drying
under ordinary room temperature.
The method of preserving fragile and soft specimen is by
immersing them in 10% formalin solution to make them
rigid and firm. After one or twodays, theywereremoved and
washed with water and then transferred intojars containing
70% denatured alcohol where they can be kept and
preserved indefinitely.
Identification of the specimens
The preserved specimen was sorted for easeofclassification
and identification. For preferences, some web pages about
macro fungi in the internet, books, and other unpublished
work were used in the preliminary identification of the
collected samples. Verification of preliminary identification
was done by an expert on macro fungi species. Available
books and references about macrofungiwereusedtoaid the
final identification of the specimen that were collected. The
books that were used are, to name a few: Guide to the
Grassland Plants (Quimio,1983);illustratedPhilippineFungi
(UP Los Banos, 1988), Eyewitness HandbookonMushrooms
(lassoe, 1998), Common Mushroom of the Northwest (Sept,
2006) and Edible Mushrooms (Wikipedia, 2005). The
specimens were classified and authenticated by an expertof
the College of Science, University of Eastern Philippines,
University Town, Northern Samar.
