The document summarizes a project at the London School of Economics (LSE) Library to add metadata records for 42 current and 8 archived research blogs, as well as 6 partner blogs, to the LSE Research Online repository. Over 11,000 blog posts were added. The project helped the library meet goals around preserving the complete intellectual output of the school and facilitating knowledge exchange and impact. Automating some metadata creation processes reduced the time spent on the work. Analysis found blog downloads were a growing part of repository usage. The library is considering expanding metadata for live blogs and adding DOIs to blog content to improve discovery and assess impact.

For political scientists content from LSE blogs was the number 1 source of academic content they shared on Twitter. For sociologists it was number 2 and for economists it was number 5. By archiving the content in IR its metadata feeds through to our Library Search platform, ensuring it is discoverable and accessible alongside library content.

- Workflows audit. Number crunch based on 1 member of staff being able to add 200 records to LSERO in a week. Complexities of estimating project workflows - minimum of 5800 posts to add, and a maximum of just over 20,000 Managing expectations – top 10 blogs priority.

- Automate creation of PDFs for each blog post – shared file for collection. ATOM XML imported files to eprints, but blank records. Able to generate BibTex files – semi-automates metadata creation as far as is possible from blog platform.

- In WordPress, the ‘author’ is the person who published the post, who tends to be the editor of the blog, rather than the author of the post’s content. They are only identified in the body of the text rather than as a separate field. Abstract often truncates part way through so manual checks. Subject tags on blogs don’t match scheme in LSERO But partial automation shaved 3 mins off process. 10 to 7.
- Met specific goal given to the Library by the School’s Knowledge Exchange and Impact strategy to archive all official blog output up until July 2017. Similarly we’ve contributed to the specific Library Strategy action to secure the collection and preservation of the complete intellectual output of the School. Begun to secure beyond July 2017.
- Impact been on the visibility and discovery of this content? Blogs themselves primary access point. +70,000 unique users each week, most popular post 470,000 views. LSERO can’t rival that, but has had significant increase in activity. Blogs still 3rd place in terms of most viewed content type, but they have had a significant percentage increase compared to other content types.
- Raising the profile of the Library as a partner in disseminating LSE’s research outputs.
