RDA Implementation scenarios
RDA Toolkit supports four different scenarios for processing
metadata:
A: Linked open data
B: Relational or object-oriented data
C: Bibliographic/authority data
D: Flat file data
The main difference is how the metadata is structured and
processed in an application:
How descriptions of different things are linked in a catalogue
How descriptions are manipulated to meet user functions
What metadata is essential ...

What metadata do we need for our use
case?
o so which RDA elements do we need?
o what recording methods suit our
scenario?
o which options will we apply?

Editor's Notes

  1. Think of Official RDA as a dictionary, it provides definitions and lists the options you have for any given element. You need to have an Application Profile if you want a narrative which can guide you through the Toolkit. An application profile specifies the entities, elements, and vocabulary encoding schemes that are expected in a set of metadata that meets the functions and requirements of an application that uses the metadata. Application profiles are specific to a given context, for example cataloguing unique sound recordings will require a different set of instructions to cataloguing mass market paperbacks. It sounds like a daunting prospect to create one, but in truth most institutions will be able to use an Application profile developed by their national institution or similar. After lunch we’re going to illustrate how Application profiles can work for you, what I would like you to do before you break for lunch is take 5 minutes to write down the main features YOUR application profile would have, should you have to write your own. A separate heading per post-it would allow us to then arrange the results, and we’ll return to this after lunch when we can examine practical solutions and come up with some of our own.
  2. A structure should be given as a basis for the activity. The structure could include: 1. Select which elements are appropriate for describing this type of material 2. Select a suitable recording method for each element 3. Select a suitable vocabulary or string encoding scheme based on the recording method The activity could lead into a discussion about Community Resources. Community Resources offers the opportunity for organisations to make their own solution rather than using something from RSC. AD stated that attendees can be split into different tables and given a different focus for the application profile. Each focus can then be brought together to make a complete application profile. The BL established its application profile by bringing together different workflows for resources and establishing their commonalities. This created a generic template. This was then expanded to include elements specific to particular workflows. TY added that we think of application profiles in terms of what elements we are going to use to create a description. Each element in RDA is an application profile in its own right. A cataloguer has to think about the available options that an element presents, and what they are going to apply. RDA forces a decision to be made, and makes you question your assumptions. There are consequences.
  3. In terms of the structure of your Application profile, it may work for your context to use the metadata format as a guide; or you may prefer to work through the RDA elements
  4. In terms of the style of your Application profile, it may work for your context to use a spreadsheet to list the instructions, or it may suit you to have more of a narrative – or you may have a blend of both, with an Application profile listing the bare bones and a Workflow document providing a narrative overlay.
  5. Local or community policies will specify the recording method or methods to be applied. If more than one recording method is applicable, I simply repeat the element with the appropriate values . The community can also specify the preferred transcription method and specify the vocabulary encoding schemes to be followed.
  6. Or, as Alan gave us with the Only Connect game, you can have an application profile listing the MARC element codes, if that is what cataloguers are familiar with.
  7. …and then of course if you’re cataloguing resources which do not self describe, do you devise a title? And if so, how?
  8. Discuss How we encode that data not an RDA decision, but obviously will form part of the picture
