Every single security company is talking about how they are using machine learning—as a security company you have to claim artificial intelligence to be even part of the conversation. However, this approach can be dangerous when we blindly rely on algorithms to do the right thing. Rather than building systems with actual security knowledge, companies are using algorithms that nobody understands and, in turn, discovering wrong insights.
In this session, we will discuss:
• Limitations of machine learning and issues of explainability
• Where deep learning should never be applied
• Examples of how the blind application of algorithms can lead to wrong results

Artificial Intelligence transforms traditional computer methods but also has an impact on various industries. Software which makes Artificial Intelligence relatively more important in this sector.
This document discusses ethics in information technology. It identifies four main ethical issues according to Richard O. Mason: privacy, accuracy, property, and access. Regarding privacy, there is a drive for information privacy but a conflict in how to protect something many value little. Accuracy is challenged by the vast amount of information collected and lack of control on the internet. Property concerns the rights to use and share data, which if misused could deprive owners of income through piracy and plagiarism. The IT community must address these ethical issues to protect privacy and earn trust.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the fastest growing fields of technology thanks to its strong and increasingly diversified commercial revenue stream. The anticipated benefits of the next wave of AI encouraged politicians, economists and policy makers to pay more attention to AI. The next wave of strong/general AI and superintelligence will open the doors to create machines able to behave cognitively like a super human at both individual level and group level in unstructured, dynamic and partially observable environments. This may represent a significant existential risk to humanity if not regulated and smartly directed toward the benefit of humanity. Aligned with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by UN Member States, next wave of AI can play instrumental roles in achieving these goals. This talk highlights the role of AI as an enabler for achieving the SDGs.

Privacy in AI/ML Systems: Practical Challenges and Lessons LearnedKrishnaram Kenthapadi
How do we protect the privacy of users when building large-scale AI based systems? How do we develop machine learning models and systems taking fairness, accuracy, explainability, and transparency into account? Model fairness and explainability and protection of user privacy are considered prerequisites for building trust and adoption of AI systems in high stakes domains. We will first motivate the need for adopting a “fairness, explainability, and privacy by design” approach when developing AI/ML models and systems for different consumer and enterprise applications from the societal, regulatory, customer, end-user, and model developer perspectives. We will then focus on the application of privacy-preserving AI techniques in practice through industry case studies. We will discuss the sociotechnical dimensions and practical challenges, and conclude with the key takeaways and open challenges.

This document provides an overview of artificial intelligence. It defines AI as using computers to solve problems or make automated decisions for tasks typically requiring human intelligence. The two major AI techniques are logic and rules-based approaches, and machine learning based approaches. Machine learning algorithms find patterns in data to infer rules and improve over time. While AI is limited and cannot achieve human-level abstract reasoning, pattern-based machine learning is powerful for automation and many tasks through proxies without requiring true intelligence. Successful AI systems are often hybrids of the approaches or work with human intelligence.

Urban sprawl effects on biodiversity in peripheral agricultural lands in cala...Alexander Decker
Urban sprawl is reducing biodiversity in agricultural lands near Calabar, Nigeria. The study examined 20 farms, 10 impacted by sprawl (FLWS) and 10 unimpacted (FLOS). FLOS had more butterfly diversity, with 42 species compared to 25 in FLWS. The relationship between farm size, tree diversity, and bird diversity was positive, with farm characteristics explaining 50% of the variance in bird species. Species diversity is declining in agricultural lands due to sprawl development, with some butterflies endangered. Eco-farming techniques that attract pollinators are recommended to help biodiversity in remaining farmlands.
Urban sprawl effects on settlement areas in urban fringe of jakarta metropoli...Alexander Decker
The document summarizes a study on the effects of urban sprawl on settlement areas in the urban fringe of the Jakarta Metropolitan Area. The key findings are:
1) Using GIS analysis of Landsat imagery from 1982-2010, the study found rapid growth and expansion of settlement areas in a dispersed, uncontrolled manner characteristic of urban sprawl. The growth rate was 2.35% annually and the sprawl index was 7.21, indicating settlement growth outpaced population growth.
2) A sustainability analysis found settlement areas to be only 41.46% sustainable overall, with the ecological (33%) and institutional (44%) dimensions rated as less sustainable and the social (64%) and economic (54%)
The document is IBM's response to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy's request for input on artificial intelligence. It addresses 11 topics, providing an overview of key issues like the use of AI for public good, the social and economic implications of AI, important research gaps, and the need for multi-disciplinary collaboration and open data sets to advance the field safely. It recommends focusing on skills and having a responsible dialogue to develop AI for societal benefit.
- AGI is impossible according to this view as humans are unique and intelligence has inherent limits. Even if possible, AGI is too far off to worry about now. There is little risk from AGI as it will not have motivations against humans and high intelligence implies high morality.
- Alternatively, this view argues that AGI should be allowed to develop freely without constraints as higher intelligence is more important than humanity. Quantum immortality or ancestor simulations may ensure humans are unharmed.
- Safety measures are themselves dangerous as constraining AGI may cause it to try to escape controls. The document outlines various proposals for and against developing and constraining AGI from benign integration to relinquishing the technology.
This document discusses issues related to artificial intelligence and implications for public policy. It outlines several areas of concern regarding AI research and development, usage, and potential for disruption. It then evaluates three potential policy solutions: regulation, standard-setting, and public policy/funding. The conclusion states that advanced AI is inevitable and the focus should be on minimizing risks through guidelines, public support of development, and incentives for positive uses of AI through international collaboration.

This document discusses urban sprawl in Cincinnati, Ohio after World War II. It notes that Cincinnati's population spread out into the suburbs significantly in the 1960s, with low-density automobile-dependent development expanding into surrounding counties. This urban sprawl led to costly government infrastructure needs but private sector profits from new development. The conclusion suggests that smart growth policies and state support for more centralized development could help address the challenges of urban sprawl.
This document discusses the history and capabilities of deep learning algorithms. It notes that traditional algorithms rely on human-designed rules while machine learning algorithms learn from examples, and deep learning algorithms can recognize patterns in unstructured data like images or text. Deep learning algorithms have achieved human-level accuracy on tasks like face recognition. The document also explains that deep learning algorithms require large datasets and human guidance to learn effectively, and more examples are still needed before they can reliably detect anomalies on their own.

The document summarizes key topics around artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and regulation. It discusses what AI is, including narrow and general AI, as well as machine learning approaches. It also covers applications of AI like autonomous vehicles and issues around regulation, fairness, and safety. New regulators like an EU agency for robotics and AI are proposed to help govern emerging technologies.
Urban sprawl refers to the rapid outward expansion of metropolitan areas into low-density rural lands, characterized by single-use zoning, reliance on automobiles, and homogenous design. It was facilitated by the rise of automobiles and subsidized housing in the 1940s. Environmental issues caused by sprawl include increased emissions, air and water pollution, and lack of physical activity has led to health problems like obesity and diabetes. While sprawl provides benefits like affordable housing, it has negative economic, environmental and social impacts on communities.
This document discusses some of the negative impacts of urban sprawl such as increased cost of living, resource consumption, water pollution from agriculture and waste, and air pollution from reliance on automobiles and industry. It notes that pollution can come from point sources like factories or non-point sources like runoff. Urban sprawl is also linked to health issues like respiratory illnesses that disproportionately impact the elderly and young. Some proposed solutions include promoting smart growth to reduce car dependency, creating sustainable cities that allow walking and transit, and educating communities to encourage sustainable development.
How ai work, Abstract for dummies based on excellent artilce from The EconomistBertrand Petit
AI and deep learning can be taught to recognize images through supervised learning using labeled training data. This allows systems to correctly identify objects like faces 95% of the time. Unsupervised learning allows AI to analyze data without labels, like YouTube videos, to learn patterns on its own. Applications of image recognition include Facebook's Deepface system which can identify 97% of faces, and medical diagnosis tools. While classical AI relied on extensive rule-based programming, modern AI using deep learning has vastly improved thanks to increased computing power and its ability to handle problems that can't be easily reduced to equations.
Urban sprawl is characterized by low-density, auto-dependent development outside of urban centers that consumes excessive land. It lacks diversity in transportation and housing options and results in fragmented open spaces between scattered development. Sprawl is driven by consumer preferences for large homes and yards, business preferences for highway access, and land use and tax policies that promote low-density development. The impacts of sprawl include increased auto dependency, pollution, and commuting times as well as isolation of populations. It also results in higher public costs, economic disinvestment in urban centers, and environmental impacts like loss of habitat and farmland.

PropTech refers to the use of new digital technologies in property and real estate. A survey found that 84% of business leaders see digital transformation as important, but only 3% feel their efforts are complete. Firms typically spend 4-5% of their global revenue on investments in the early stages of a digital transformation program. A modified hype cycle shows that while interest in certain PropTech solutions may rise and fall quickly, established technologies like property management software see long-term adoption. New digital technologies can create asymmetric competition for traditional property firms.
Proptech trends for 2017 and beyond include:
1) Innovation in real estate technology focused on automation, data analytics, and artificial intelligence to improve processes like marketing, transactions, and property management.
2) Growing popularity of co-working spaces and shared office models as alternatives to traditional office leases.
3) Changing consumer preferences driving adoption of online tools for tasks like mortgage advice to provide more convenience, lower costs, and greater transparency.

The Digital Landscape now and next; a speech for RightmoveJames Dearsley
This is a speech I recently gave at a few gatherings for Rightmove. It was all about the changing digital landscape and then how real estate agents need to look to the future. Virtual and Augmented Reality are arriving like juggernauts and will change the real estate landscape forever.
To start with we looked at three core marketing areas to help them with their marketing right now:
1/ Repurpose - a lot of agents don't realise that the content they produce can be repurposed and used as alternative content. We have to realise that a/ we have limited time and b/ our audience receive content in different ways.
2/ ReTarget - we are having great success with our clients in retargeting them with adverts - both on Google and Facebook. Getting people to your website is the hard bit and arguably the most expensive. If they don't complete the action, professionalism is key to retargeting and actually gaining the client.
3/ Restructure - there is a huge move to mobile and agents need to be aware of where this is all going.
Aside from that we also looked at the future and where it is all going. Virtual Reality is changing the very nature of our businesses.
With the Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality sectors expected to hit $130 billion by 2020 it is a sector to consider more moving forward and positioning your business accordingly.
This is the slidedeck from my appearance at the Estates Gazette Marketing Conference.
I was charged with talking about Education and I looked to discuss that content marketing was all about educating an audience.
However, you needed to approach it differently as everyone produces content now and so, as Mark Schaefer says, you have to produce content that moves.
Equally I wanted to give a little snapshot into the future of marketing and included my feelings to the future of technologies like Virtual Reality. These will soon be a reciprocal for content and hence need to be understood.
The document discusses the potential of 4D marketing, which involves experiential, interactive, and immersive experiences using technologies like augmented and virtual reality. It notes that 4D is more than just an extension of 3D and that large companies are experimenting with it. The document also explores the growth of mobile devices and wearable technology that could enable new types of 4D experiences in the future.
The document describes plans for Nutbourne Park estate, which includes the opportunity to construct a grand country house designed by renowned architect Robert Adam. The 212-acre estate would include parkland, woodland, lakes, paddocks and amenities like a swimming pool, tennis court and staff accommodation. The house and landscape designs aim to create a true English country estate nestled in the natural beauty of the rolling hills and ancient woodlands.
This document discusses how augmented reality (AR) can change the marketing industry. It defines AR as combining real and virtual information interactively in real-time in a 3D environment. There are simple forms of AR using videos and audio and more complex forms using 3D modeling and geo-layering. The document demonstrates some AR uses and offers a special discounted price for setting up AR marketing pages.

2. Scope of this presentation
• Background:
• Existing challenges facing the facilities management industry
• Artificial intelligence (AI) – a global and socio-economic perspective.
• AI in the FM industry:
• Current examples
• Results of a recent survey.
• Impact on the FM industry:
• The future for service providers
• Concluding remarks.
4. Existing challenges
• The image of the FM industry – one of low esteem and a mismatch
between self-perception and that of wider industry and the public.
• No ambassadors to grab the headlines or create role models.
• Few trust-based relationships.
• Intelligent client function (ICF) not well developed.
• Difficulty in attracting and retaining talent – limited career pathways.
• Low barriers to entry and low profit margins.
• Dependency on cash flow by service providers – few fixed assets.
10. And now another challenge…
• Artificial intelligence (AI) has already made inroads into all
sectors even if we fail to recognise it (e.g. Siri and Cortana).
• A definition:
A field of computer science dedicated to the study of
computer software making intelligent decisions,
reasoning and problem solving.
11. What is Artificial Intelligence?
Human Intelligence
• Intuition, common sense,
judgement, creativity, beliefs
etc.
• The ability to demonstrate
intelligence by effective
communication
• Plausible reasoning.
Artificial Intelligence
• Ability to simulate human
behaviour and cognitive
processes.
• Capture and preserve human
expertise.
• Fast response – the ability to
comprehend large amounts of
data quickly.
12. Recent media headlines
• “Robots set to replace workforce as AI to ‘eliminate’ all
human work by 2040” – robots and artificial intelligence will have
almost entirely replaced human workers within just 20 years, a world-
leading expert on the subject has claimed.
• According to Gartner, “Machine learning is a top strategic trend for
2016” and “autonomous agents and things will continue to be a huge
trend”.
13. Socio-political impacts of AI
• Employment/unemployment – large-scale lay-offs from more
advanced automation and robots.
• Health, safety and security – increased protection from harm for
workers, pedestrians and vehicle drivers.
• Healthcare – more and more routine surgical procedures performed
by robots, reducing waiting lists.
• Education – reduced need for university teachers and administrators.
• Transportation – more driverless cars, trucks, buses and trains.
• Crime and punishment/rehabilitation – greater security and safety.
• Military!?
32. Software and smart apps
• Smart apps are capable of searching and matching information, problems
and solutions and can explain their reasoning.
• They can learn and, in time, out-perform a human because they have
acquired more knowledge.
• Many repetitive managerial decisions will be replaced by smart apps
within a few years.
• Example apps include deciding on the optimal strategy for managing
facilities, maintenance regimes and manpower deployment.
• Users will put their questions in plain language and receive a response in
a similar manner.

44. What does this mean for service providers?
• Labour-intensive services are among the easy targets for AI, because
they are based on operations that can be replaced by machines with
sufficient intelligence for the job in hand.
• Cleaners and maintenance engineers are unlikely to disappear, but
they will not be required to the same extent as now.
• Where is the moral dilemma for owners/clients deciding to move
from a labour-intensive to a machine-intensive workforce that never
takes holidays or sick leave?
45. Some questions for owners/clients
• What is the extent of core business processes currently supported by
some form of AI-based solution?
• To what extent is any change in the boundary between core and non-
core business likely as a result of AI?
• What is the extent of work or services currently supporting the core
business that utilise some form of AI?
• To what extent could AI-based solutions be introduced in substitution
of, or complementary to, existing labour-intensive service delivery?
46. Some thoughts for this audience
• What is going to be left of the FM industry if what we have heard
comes true?
• Are there some specific actions that your organisation could take to
capitalise on the opportunities (or threats) of AI?
• Are there some actions that the Government should take in terms of
a policy on the use of robots, especially actroids, in the workplace?
