King James I introduced harsh laws against Catholics in England over 400 years ago. Guy Fawkes and other Catholics who opposed the king plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament with barrels of gunpowder when the king was there. On November 5th, Guy Fawkes was found guarding the gunpowder and was arrested. To celebrate his survival, King James established an annual tradition of lighting bonfires and fireworks on November 5th, now known as Bonfire Night. Today on Bonfire Night, people in England burn effigies of Guy Fawkes, light bonfires, set off fireworks, and eat traditional foods like potatoes and parkin cake.

The Glorious Revolution are the events between (1688-1689) that led to the replacement, in 1689, of James II by his daughter Mary II and her husband William of Orange (who became William III) as joint monarchs.
The Revolution has at least from two different points of view: The first one showed that William wanted to rescue Britain from Catholicism under the absolutist-style regime of James II.
The second one showed the ascension of William of Orange to the British Throne as an invasion motivated by real political and a personal lust for powers. On the one hand, James' rule of the British Isles was so cruel, so heavy-handed, so obviously an effort to restore the papacy to England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland that his own people rose against him. By delegations from the nobility, William was invited to become the king. On the other hand, the only way in which William could become king of England was through invasion. On 19 October, William went on board, and the Dutch fleet.
Admiral Herbert led the van, and Vice-Admiral Evert Zen brought up the rear. The prince placed himself in the centre, carrying an English flag, emblazoned with his arms, surrounded with the legend, "For the Protestant Religion and Liberties of England." After landing successfully and without opposition; William marched on London and forced James to flee to France.
The throne was declared vacant by abdication, and William was pronounced king of all Britain on February 1689.
The Glorious Revolution created a workable form of government in Britain where the people could get things done through them. They did not have to have violent revolutions (as the people in France did). It also created a balance of power between the monarch and the Parliament.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. 2. The Gunpowder Plot
King James was the
king of England over
400 years ago. He
introduced harsh laws
against Catholics.
Every autumn there
was a special
ceremony, when King
James would be at the
Houses of Parliament
3. Guy Fawkes and his friends were some of
the people who did not like the king.
They plotted to blow up the Houses of
Parliament when the king was there.
4. Underneath the Houses of Parliament were
many cellars. Guy Fawkes and his friends
planned to put barrels of gunpowder in one of
these cellars, ready to blow up the king.
Guy Fawkes was put in charge of guarding
the gunpowder.
5. A few weeks before they were going to
blow up Parliament, the King found out
what had been planned, and on the
morning of the 5th November, soldiers
searched the cellars.
In one of the cellars,
they found Guy Fawkes,
ready and waiting to light
the gunpowder.
6. The soldiers arrested Guy, and took him to
the Tower of London, where they kept
him prisoner.
They also arrested the other plotters and
took them to the tower as well.
7. To celebrate that he had survived,
King James said that people
should have a big bonfire and light
fireworks every year on November
5th.
8. Today people…
