Country, like the tram.
The underground has three different
lines which allow you to move
around Biscay. To use the

Bilbao has a great fleet of taxis to to
be able to transport as many people
as possible. At present the Basque
Government has informed that they
will buy new electrical taxis because
they are safer and they pollute less
than other types of cars.
In Bilbao we have a bicycle lane (the
“bidegorri”). “Bide” is path and “gorri”
is red in Basque. There you can use
your bike or the bicycles of the Town
Hall.
Last year the Town Hall put public
bicycles in many places of the city.
To use these bicycles there was only
one requirement : to pay 25€ each
year. At present this project has
been renewed and now the bikes are
electrical.
In Bilbao there are 345 821 inhabitants. The spoken languages
are Spanish and Basque . In Bilbao 96.774 can speak Basque,
but 175.501  know it.
The flag of bilbao
Bilbao is built along the “Nervion-Ibaizabal”estuary ” that extends 16 km
into the city and divides its metropolitan area in its left bank (Barakaldo,
Sestao, Portugalete and Santurce) and its right bank (Erandio,Leioa and
Getxo).
OTHER IMPORTANT FACTS

mountains are Artxanda, ,Ganekogorta,Arraiz,
Arnótegui,Banderas, Monte  Abril ,Pikotamendi , Santo

2. HISTORY AND
ECONOMY OF THE
TOWN
The foundation of Bilbao was in 13th century. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the
big evolution of the city started . Although years ago Bilbao was an industrial city ,
recently it has became a service city.
The political system of Bilbao is organized by the City Council and the
Provincial Government (Diputación). At the Provincial Government they
make decisions for  all the province of Biscay and at the City Council they
make decisions only for the city of Bilbao.
MOST IMPORTANT
MAYORS
One of the most important
characters of Bilbao History was
Iñaki Azkuna, Bilbao’s former Mayor.
When he ruled the city, Bilbao
changed from  being an industrial
city into being a city of services.
ECONOMICAL FEATURES
Bilbao has always been a very important commercial and  financial centre. Lots of
financial headquarters are in Bilbao: Bilbao Stock Exchange, SPRI (entrepreneurs’
association), the most important Banks in Spain , some of the most relevant
Lawyers’ firms and  Business Associations, and all kinds of, building, real estate,
engineering and service companies.
Years ago, there was a  lot of industry around Bilbao, but with the transformation of
Bilbao into a service city they disappeared.
Among the the most important industries that used to be in  Bilbao we can mention
Altos hornos de Bilbao, Euskalduna and Babcock & Wilcox.
Altos Hornos de Bilbao: It was a steel and iron factory.
Euskalduna: It was a company that built and repaired  ships.
Babcock & Wilcox: they produced steam boilers, hydraulic turbines,
electric and diesel cars and others.
TOURISM
Apart from being a financial center, Bilbao is also  a very commercial city where  a
lot of people from Spain and The Basque Country come to buy  things, particularly
to shopping centres.
Bilbao is one of the most visited cities in  Spain  too, because there are a lot of
beautiful places. That’s why it has become  a tourist destination. Some of the main
landmarks inside the city are Guggenheim Museum or Azkuna Zentroa (“Azkuna
Center”in Basque).

people.
FISHING
As Bilbao is a metropolitan area , fishing is not practiced in the city itself,
but around Bilbao it is. All that is fished around the Basque Country
comes to the Rivera Market (the most important market in Bilbao), where
we can find some of the most appreciated kinds of fish such as hake, cod
or all kinds of shellfish.
AGRICULTURE
Although in Bilbao we haven’t got
agriculture, there is a lot around
Bilbao , in Basque houses called
"Baserriak". It is common to grow
wheat, barley, grapes, oats, peppers,
apples, potatoes and tomatoes.
CATTLE INDUSTRY
In the cattle industry it’s the same case as fishing. In Bilbao itself there’s
no cattle industry but there is in villages around the city where calf, lamb,
pork and chicken is produced.
LOCAL PRODUCTS
In “baserriak” they also produce dairy
products like milk curd which is typical  to
have as a dessert. Also, honey is
produced to be eaten on toast or added
to hot milk .
Alcoholic drinks such as txakoli and cider
are made  to be used for meals or to cook
some recipes.

its name is “Done Jakue
Katedrala”.
This is it:
Its architectural

“Portugalete”. It can carry cars and
people too. It crosses the “Nervion
River”.

his Gernika masterpiece.
In Gernika you can find The House of Assembly “Casa De Juntas”, a

6.TRADITIONS AND
FESTIVALS
SANTO TOMAS
In some towns and cities of The Basque
Country, like in Bilbao or Lekeitio, is
celebrated a festival on the 21st of
December. It Is a celebration where some
villagers set up street markets and sell
country products like “talo” (Talos are corn
flour pancakes made in the Basque
Country) and “txistorra” (it is similar to
txorizo). People started holding this
celebration before the XIV century, in
1351.
In this celebration the traditions of the
Basque villages are imitated. People
dress up like villagers. Men wear a
Basque “txapela” (beret), jeans, a blue
and white checked kerchief , an
“alkandora” (it is similar to a blue shirt),
white socks and special shoes called
“albarcas”. The women wear more or
less the same clothes, but instead of
wearing jeans and an “alkandora”, they
were a long skirt and a white t-shirt.
In Bilbao is done this Festival for 9
days. It is the most important festival in
Biscay. It starts on the first Saturday
after 15th August. In this celebration
there are some groups of friends called
“Bilboko konpartsak”. These ones
liven up the Festival by, for example,
playing music .
During this week some street bars,
called “Txosnak”, are put where people
can eat and drink. There are also some
exhibitions in the street of ,for
example, jugglers’. History: People started celebrating
this festival in the year 1978 when a
konpartsa called Txomin Barullo won
the competition of ideas for holding a
celebration.
The character of this festival: The
symbol of Aste nagusia is Mari Jaia.
She is a big character with colorful
clothes. Mari Puri Herrero painted this
character in 1978. When Mari Jaia
comes we sing her song “Badator Mari
Jaia”. When the Festival finishes Mari
Jaia is burned and the next year they
make another one.
Each year there is a programme
where the different events are
scheduled. All the nights there
are different fireworks
exhibitions.
A S T E N A G U S I A ( T H E B I G W E E K )
T H E C I T Y A N N I V E R S A R Y
This festival is celebrated on the 15th
and 16th of June. In the night of the
15th the Bilbao’s City Hall decorates
the street with lights. That night is
called the “Gau zuria”, in English “the
white night”. The lights are on from 21:
30 to 1:30 a.m. Last year it was the
718th anniversary of Bilbao.
Apart from the lights, there are some
plays on the streets and they also play
some music.
S A N T A A G U E D A
Santa Agueda is a religious
celebration because of the martyr
Agueda de Catania or Saint Agueda.
A martyr is a person that is
persecuted because of defending
something, normally about religion.
We celebrate this on the 5th  of
February because this martyr died
on that day. On this day people
 dress up like “villagers”.
On this festival’s eve some choirs go
singing in Basque throughout the
city. The people in these choirs
stand in circles while singing and
there is always a person with a
lantern in the centre. The rest of the
group takes a wooden stick to mark
the rhythm. They sing a typical song
in Basque about Santa Agueda.
C H R I S T M A S I N B I L B A O
In Bilbao Christmas Festival starts on the 19th
of December and it finishes on the 7th of
January. During these  holidays in some places
in Bilbao  Christmas trees are put with lights
and  the main streets are also decorated with
 lights.
On the 24th of December, the Christmas Eve,
at night “Olentzero”( a mythological
character) comes to give presents if your
behaviour during the year  has been good. The
next day, Christmas Day, is also celebrated
with your family.
Some days after Christmas, comes
the New Year’s Eve.
The next day is New Year’s day and
people usually have lunch with
their  family.
Five days later the Three Wise
men’s day is celebrated  It is
similar to Olentzero, but
Olentzero is only in the Basque
Country
Easter week is a celebration of Jesus’ death
and resurrection for Christian people.
These holidays start on the 18th of April and
finish on the 1st of May. During these days, in
Bilbao, there are different religious parades
These are the most famous processions:
“Nazareno”, celebrated in San Francisco,
a very poor neighbourhood in Bilbao.
“Borriquito” (little monkey). It is
celebrated in the “Gran vía” (Main street).
-The Procession of the Silence. It is done
in silence, throughout the old part of the city.
