The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 involved a plan by Catholic recusants led by Robert Catesby to blow up the English Parliament and kill King James I. Guy Fawkes was recruited as an explosives expert to store and guard 36 barrels of gunpowder in a cellar beneath the House of Lords. The plot was foiled when an anonymous letter warned Lord Monteagle not to attend Parliament. A search found Fawkes guarding the gunpowder. He and the other plotters were arrested, tried for treason, and executed. Some historians argue that evidence suggests the plot's ringleaders may have been framed by Robert Cecil, the Secretary of State, who distrusted Catholics and wanted to discredit them.
