The institution of FAMILY has three important
functions:
•To provide for the rearing of children
•To provide a sense of identity or belonging
among its members
•To transmit culture between generations

• FAMILY- two or more people related by blood,
marriage or adoption.
• HOUSEHOLD- basic residential unit where
economic production, inheritance, child rearing,
and shelter are recognized and carried out.
II. FORMS OF THE FAMILYII. FORMS OF THE FAMILY
• According to MEMBERSHIP: nuclear, extended,
nontraditional families, nonfamily household
and single-parent household

comprised of parent(s) and children
EXTENDED FAMILY: family structure
comprised of two or more generations

BLENDED FAMILY: family structure
formed when at least partner in a
marriage has been married before and
has children from the previous
marriage
SINGLE PARENT FAMILY: family
structure in which one parent is
head of household raising children
without other parent

 JUDEO-CHRISTIAN LAW (adultery is punishable by
death)
 SHARIAH LAW (women found guilty of adultery is
sentenced to death through stoning)
• MARRIAGE- culturally sanctioned union between
two or more people that establishes certain rights
and obligations between the people, between
them and their children, between them and their
in-laws.

• INCEST TABOO- is the prohibition of sexual
intercourse or marriage among mother and son,

• According to COMPOSITION:
MONOGAMY- marriage in which both partners
have just one spouse.
SERIAL MONOGAMY-is a marriage form in
which an individual marries or lies with a series
of partners in succession.

 POLYGAMY-one individual having multiple
spouses at the same time.
 POLYGYNY-is a marriage of a man to two
or more women at the same time.
 POLYANDRY-is a marriage of a woman to
two or more men at the same time.
 GROUP MARRIAGE(co-marriage)-marriage
in which several men and women have
sexual access to one another.

• According to ETHNICITY:
• EXOGAMY: marriage to person outside kind or group
• Result: Heterogamy (different)
• Ex: outside blood line

• Ex: within race/age/caste

• KINSHIP- a network of relatives within which
individuals passes certain mutual rights and
obligations.
