Ethnolect Essay Examples
The speech of an individual is a linguistic map of their identity and an indication of how they would
like to be perceived. Migrants who come to Australia already possess the linguistic structures of
their mother tongue, and these will affect the way they speak English, forming an ethnolect.
Consequently, a person s languageis a clear indicator of their past ethnic origins, and the English
they choose to speak will also indicate how they would like others to perceive them. This latter is
true for everyone, as we all vary our language according to context.
Bill is a young Chinese student who has come to Australia two years ago from China to further his
education. His lexical field is wide and varied, he is able to use complex syntactic ... Show more

Leaving verbs in their base form is a feature of many Mandarin speakers, as in Mandarin, tenses
are indicated by other means.... Another syntactic feature is the plural, which is sometimes not
formed as shown before. For example, my family member , at those stage , a lot of country and
different background . Such non standard usage also pinpoints Bill s identity as a Chinese speaker
as there are no plurals for nouns in Mandarin. Bill s word order too is sometimes non standard,
especially when expressing more complex ideas. For example, aging population faces in Japan
rather than Japan too faces an aging population . All these syntactic features contribute to his
identity as a young Chinese student still in the process of mastering the English language.
A subject s attitude can also show what kind of speaker he or she would like to be perceived. For
example, Bill states that he prefers the Australian accent over the Singaporean accent. This would
show that he puts a high value on the Australian English and would like to be perceived as a
English speaker
From this, it can be seen that many features contribute to a person s ethnolect, and from it we can
deduce the subject s identity and the way he or she wants to be perceived. Furthermore, migrants
who come to Australia know that they must learn English, as Nothing unites a country

The War Of World War II
September 3, 1939 was the day that many people s lives changed. That is date of which Great
Britain entered World War II. Great Britain would fight alongside the allied powers, which
consisted of USSR, France, and US. The axis powers, which consisted of Germany, Italy, and
Japan, would try and bomb the allied powers into surrender. This brutal war would go on for
nearly five and a half years, finally ending on May 8, 1945. The end of the war marked both
celebration and mourning. For Great Britain some major turning points during the war were the
Battle of Britain, and the invasion scare. Many families had to make sacrifices during the war,
some of them life changing. The people of Great Britain refused to go to war and were in denial,
many of them would not listen to future Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Churchill warned the
people about Hitler and Nazi Germany . Because of everybody s fear of the war, Britain was not
prepared when it came time for the country to enter the war. After World War I
, Great Britain
wanted to avoid any war at all costs. At the time, Neville Chamberlain was the Prime minister of
Great Britain and he wanted to keep peace throughout the country. After the first world war,
Chamberlain primarily focused on being in the League of Nations and that led to the deterioration
of his armed forces and turn the focus to the inside of the country. The League of Nations was
founded after World War I and it was there to ensure that war never broke out again .

The Conflict Diamonds Of Sierra Leone
The conflict diamonds started to be present and problematic in Sierra Leone as soon as DeBeers
mining company took control of all diamond prospects throughout this region. Although DeBeers
was keeping a moderate watch on the trading and actions being taken through it, traders from
Lebanon (bordered by Syria and Israel to the south) were able to easily smuggle and mine diamonds
out through the company. Later towards the 1950s, countries, such as Sierra Leone, had to give up
the chance of regulating the illicit diamondindustry, thus having to warn owners of the mines to
provide their own security measures for the mines and land they owned. The issue wasn t justly
political or economic until Sierra Leone gained its independence in 1961, letting Siaka Stevens
enroll as Prime minister, therefore having a one party ruler. Stevens took control, and
monopolized the diamond mines, as well as encouraging them to gain power and fame
nationwide. Things were looking austere for diamond control rights and regulations, not only to
watch a civil war emerge, surging through the country as fire fought fire and brother fought
against brother. As the war extended from 1991 to 1999, it brought forth other problems as a
result of citizen on citizen warfare for the diamonds such as rape, murder, and sex slaves. Once
75,000 lives were claimed, the people of Sierra Leone finally realized that victims and executors of
these terrible crimes has emerged from the cash crop known as diamonds.

The Exploitation Of Land Is Justified Essay
The economy today runs on an antiquated ritual of exploiting, plundering, devastation, and
manipulation of land for material wealth, profiting the wealthy and condemning the poor. This
mindset is no more sophisticated than feudalism, a system so bad it had to be outlawed along with
witchcraft. The idea that exploitation of land is justified has brought plastics to the ocean and
leveled rainforests. Large corporations have grown larger by manufacturing and production,
depleting the planet s resources in the process. Now, companies must make a combined effort to put
the environment first, before profit. Because of their harmful practices, consumers have the right to
know where products come from, how they re made, and the impact on the environment.
Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the large corporations to change their harmful practices, to
make strides towards ending climate changeand use clean, sustainable methods.
With the combination of polymers that don t biodegrade and mass overproduction, companies are
harming the environment in severe ways. Plastic, a material seen everywhere, is a polymer made
from oil. It is mass produced to make everything from shampoo bottles to automobiles and does not
biodegrade. When it is eventually thrown out, the waste usually finds it way into the ocean, where
it is either buried under sediment or eaten by marine life (Weisman 287 295). Creating a material
that will ultimately kill marine life will undoubtedly wreak havoc on the

High School Jacket Research Paper
I threw my books on the bed and approached the jacket slowly, as if it were a celebrity I was about
to meet. My hands drugged acrossed the soft cold leather, the color of dark forest green and black.
From the kitchen my mom yelled that my jacket was in the closet. I slowly opened the closet
hoping my jacket was the one on my bed. Sure enough it was, right then I slipped into my jacket.
It was a little big on me so I would have it for at least three years. Looking at the jacket I could see
my future, all the girls around me, hanging out with the cool kids. It is like my jacket was one
million dollars.
I slipped my jacket back on and looked in the mirror and realized that I would look good if I
combed my hair. My sleeves ran past my hands so I rolled the cuffs up, and ran down stairs and
hugged my mom like there was no life left in her Thank you! I screamed. I sprinted outside with
my new style of hair and jacket. As I was outside I tried to avoid my hungry dog, so I could show
everyone how cool I was in my new slick jacket. As I sat on the fence daydreaming about my
jacket, two cool kids walked over to me and invited me to hang out with there group of friends at

Descartes, Hobbes, and Pascal Essay examples
Descartes, Hobbes, and Pascal During the 17th and 18th century, religion, religious beliefs and
most of all the religious leaders played a very influential role in the direction of politics. This
was also a time when religion and politics played a large role in the direction of what was
accepted as a result of the new discoveries in the natural sciences and in a time when there were
some very influential writers, philosophers, scientists and mathematicians. At the time, these people
were considered to be very radical and revolutionary because of some of their beliefs and this often
times led them to be highly scrutinized, criticized and sometimes even punished by the legal
system. Now in the 21st century, these views that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In it, Descartes talks about the existence of the human beings and the existence of God. He gets
himself to doubt everything and then assumes that doubt does exist. That is how he reaches to
the conclusion of Cogito Ergo Sum , which means, I think, therefore I am . He realizes that if he
can think, then he also exists, and he uses this also to prove the existence of God. He says that
the body and the mind are two separate entities and the only thing that unites them is God.
Descartes was very flattered to know how much people appreciate his writings and he assured
that he probably would have had a better time with the church nowadays because they are more
open minded. In the past, although Descartes believed in God, the Church did not like him a lot
and that really depressed him. He realized that nowadays, the Church is not as strict as before
because science has taken total control over the people and now is much more respected than
before. As we can see, as time has gone by, he continues, science has divorced from the church
and it seems that soon it will become like a separate religion because he was amazed how much
people believe in all of the science s claims. The next author that will talk about is Thomas
Hobbes. As we all know, he was the writer of the famous Leviathan, which was written in England
on 1651. In his writing, he presents us a bleak picture of human beings in the

Compare And Contrast Culture And American Culture
Culture is a very vital part of the world as we know it today. There are very many different cultures
all around the world. In the USA, we have a mix of all the different cultures and and family values.
From the original Native Americans that inhabited America to the Middle Eastern people in
Afghanistan. These people groups have brought their language, food, values, and customs with
them.
There are lots of different types of families in today s American society. Mine is a little bit weird.
My parents got divorced when I was about 5 years old. My Dad re married when I was about 8 and
then got divorced again. My mom remarried when I was around 11 years old. My dad re married
again around the same time. It seems like in today s society that more and more families are
becoming split households. That is the culture difference between the USA and other countries. In
the earlier years of the United States, many people looked down on divorce. Divorce was like a
curse word to them back then.

The Baltic Company is considering the purchase of a new machine tool to replace an obsolete one.
The machine being used for the operation has a tax basis book value of $80,000, with an annual
depreciation expense of $8,000. It has a resale value today of $40,000, is in good working order,
and will last, physically, for at least 10 more years. The proposed machine will perform the
operation so much more efficiently and Baltic engineers estimate that labor, material, and other
direct costs of the operation will be reduced $60,000 a year if it is installed. The proposed
machine costs $240,000 delivered and installed, and its economic life is estimated at 10 years,
with zero salvage value. The company expects to earn 14 percent on its investment after taxes (14
percent is the firm s cost of capital). The tax rate is 40 percent, and the firm uses straight line
depreciation. Any gain or loss on the sale of the machine at retirement is subject to tax at 40
percent. Should Baltic buy the new machine?

Blind Obedience in Shirley Jackson s The Lottery
The author of The Lottery wrote this story to shock the story s readers with a graphic
demonstration of the pointless violence and general inhumanity in their own lives (Jackson 211).
This story reflects human behavior in society to show how although rules, laws or traditions do not
make sense, people follow them. Throughout the story the three main symbols of how people
blindly follow senseless traditions were the lotteryitself, the color black, and the hesitation that
people had towards the prize. The lotteryin the story was the game in which the prize was death. In
reality this lottery symbolized the game of life, and how our behavior as human beings influences
our choices in life and therefore our destiny. In this case the... Show more content on

The author uses this symbol to help readers relate the story to their everyday life more easily. In
society people may think something is wrong but if they see a bunch of people doing it they ll go
ahead and do it themselves. At the end of the story, when the winner was picked, the narrator says
A stone hit her on the side of the head (Jackson 217). This quote refers that nobody saw who was
the first one to hit her but as soon as the stone hit her head ВЁthen they were upon her (218).
People at first were unsure whether to start throwing the stones or not, but as soon as one threw
the first one, they all followed without hesitation. This story had a graphical representation that
seemed to be abnormal or incoherent in the way it was presented, because in our society it is not
normal and it is against the law to have a game in which the prize is death, but although it is not
normal and against the law it happens in our everyday life. Although we do not have this kind of
tradition anymore (within the United States,) we do have other rules, or laws, which instead of
help people, it kills them little by little and some people decide to take justice in their hands. For
example in some foreign countries the laws allow government to punish criminals by publically
humiliating

Motif And Motifs In Macbeth
Sight of Darkness: Analyzing Murder Motifs in Macbeth
Throughout Shakespeare s Macbeth, the motif sight represents a terrible event or murder;
coinciding with the event, while also highlighting Macbeth s lack of accountability for the crimes.
Through the use of the motif sight, it is conveyed that Macbeth decides he must turn a blind eye to
the murder of Duncan. While trying to secure the throne he is prophesied to have, Macbeth
frequently questions whether he should interfere with fate s process. After speaking with Duncan,
Macbeth steps aside and states, The eye wink at the hand, yet let that be /which the eye fears, when
it is done, to see (1.4.59 60). Macbeth s thoughts to kill Duncan are so evil when he does it that
Macbeth doesn t want to look. In addition, the eye is a directly related to the brain, therefore, by
winking, Macbeth tries to avoid acknowledging the evil he may commit. To conclude, Macbeth
cannot stomach the thought of killing Duncan so he must turn a blind eye to it; he will try to
literally not see it, and not acknowledge it cognitively. Another example of Macbeth turning a
blind eye is after the killing of Duncan. Macbeth discusses with Lady Macbeth the remorse and
guilt he feels. He states, I am afraid to think what I have done. / Look at again I dare not (2.2.66
67). Even after killing Duncan in attempt to claim the throne, Macbeth refuses to look at Duncan
and his dead body. This again highlights Macbeth s refusal to condone his deeds as he cannot
bare to look at what he has done. The final sight motif used by Macbeth precedes the murder of
Banquo. Even after Duncan is dead, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth cannot stand idle and wait for
the crown to be delivered to them; they decree to remove any threats posed to their succession.
For this reason, they hire three murderers to kill Banquo. While talking to Lady Macbeth about
their plans, Macbeth responds, Come, seeling night, / scarf up the tender eye of pitiful day / and
with thy bloody and invisible hand (3.2.52 54). Similarly to the first passage, Macbeth is saying
the actions of killing Banquo are so violent that it cannot be visible by the light of day. Related to
both passages, Macbeth does not want anyone to

Analysis Of The Interesting Things About This Broadway...
[Alex Brightman] One of the interesting things about this Broadway season is that the two most
nominated shows are Hamilton and Shuffle Along, which feature big and almost entirely non
white casts. Additionally, there s Eclipsed, the first Broadway production be written, directed,
and performed exclusively by black women, and The Color Purple, which centers around black
actresses. The list goes on. What can Hollywood, learn from Broadway because they are
obviously having their own struggling with diversity at the moment? [Reed Birney] So much. I
mean, clearly [[00:00:30]] like what you just talked about in just the casting. But even beyond
the diversity within the casting and the storytelling, I think storytelling in general. I think
Hollywood is in a major drought right now, for actually capturing people s hearts and attentions

talent transcends anything else talent and drive and merit. I mean, I grew up thinking that show
business was a meritocracy, and it is not,and especially in [[00:01:00]] Hollywood. I think that
now, especially in what people are calling the new golden age of theater, we re doing it right.

My Aphorism
My aphorism is hold tight to your roots but be open to the future. This is aphorism really relates
to me and what I believe in. It shows the importance of knowing who you are but also being open
to new things to come in the future. Holding tight to your roots means remembering where you
came from and what standards and ideals are important to you. In my aphorism when I say be
open to the future it means being open to new ways of thinking and change later on in your life.
My aphorism means remembering who you are but not letting that hold you back in the future.
My aphorism is important because it tells you to remember who you are, where you came from,
and to remember the ideals and standards that you have. Also, be open to other ideas or things
happening in your life in the future. To me my aphorism means holding on to my ideals and
standards and knowing where I came from. Even later on in life towards the future I will always
remember who I am but be open to new things that are to come. My aphorism shapes and effects
my decisions because when I make my decisions I remember who I am and my standards. I also
know to be open to new things in life and new ways of thinking. The aphorism I have chosen has
helped me to not be so stubborn. It has also helped me to be more open to change. My aphorism
can help an individual because anyone can relate to it. Everyone has roots. Most people have a
specific set of standards that they try to live by. My aphorism can also help by showing people
what they already know but then expounding on that ideain the future. The good that people can
find in my aphorism is the fact that it can relate to anybody s life. In my aphorism it talks about
remembering who you are and where you came from but still being open to new things life. The
good that it shows is remembering who you are but being open to the future to come. The effect
of ignoring my aphorism is not being able to be open to new ideas and ways of thinking in the
future. Not being able to remember your roots and where you came from. You lose your identity
and who you really truly are. Society would benefit from living by my aphorism because it would

Essay about The Status of Women and the Bhaki Movement in...
The Status of Women and The Bhakti Movement in India Originating in ancient Tamil Nadu, the
Bhakti movement in India spread to the north during the late medieval ages when north India was
under Islamic rule. The movement was spontaneous and counter to the predominant caste ideology
which was dividing Hinduism. The adherents of the movement had their own rendering of
devotional expression. While in the south, devotion was centered on both Shiva and Vishnu (in all
his forms), the northern devotional movement was centered on Rama and Krishna, both of whom
are believed to be incarnations of Vishnu. Though initially the Bhakti movement was considered
unorthodox due to its defiance of caste distinctions and disregard of Brahmanic rituals, it... Show

Well aware of this, the saints of the movement narrated their philosophy in local dialects and
lyrical forms. They also expressed their ideologies and teachings through hymns and poems. In
contrast, while the male bhakti saints clamoured for change and protested against the injustices
in society, the woman was still expected to be at the back of the home. The male bhaktas did not
have any intention of including women in these changing times. One major exception to this is
Nanak, who spoke for the empowerment of women. He wrote : It is by women that we are
conceived and it is from her that we are betrothed and married It is a woman we befriend and it
is she keeps a race going When one woman dies another is sought for and it is with her that we
get established in society Why call her evil from whom are born kings and great men. (Nanak)
The Nirgun sant especially, looked down on women. Even sants like Surdas, Dadu dayal and
Tulsidas felt that women were to be kept subdued and in control. However, saints like Mirabai,
Bahinabai, Dayabai, Janabai, Sahjo Bai, Akka Mahadevi and Kanhopatra, to name a few, through
their bold poetry and self expression, embraced this movement and broke through the conventional
restrictions of medieval Indian society. Women saints wrote of the obstacles of home, constraints of
married life and meaningless household

ways Palahniuk and Ellis present modern masculinity.
In the context of shifting gender roles and ambiguities, a crisis in masculinity has been identified in
both Bret Easton Ellis American Pyscho and Palahniuk s Fight club . This crisis is defined by the
new uncertainty of what it means to be a man in a modern world no longer in thrall to traditional
models of brutish machismo with the roles of men evolving according to Kimmel, (1987) with the
increasing independence of women due them gaining rights through means like the civil rights act
of 1964 and Equal Rights Amendment which was passed by Congress and sent to the states for
ratification in 1972. Both Palahniuk and Ellis consider this changing nature of this masculinity
during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Against a backdrop of seemingly rampant capitalism,
American Psycho represents the brutal conception of modern masculinity in the face of Western
industrial decline and the rising status of women. Just 5 years later, Fight Club again takes up the
question of masculinity but with the backdrop of a discredited world trade system and a satirical
focus on the role of mass media and mass consumption. Whilst both texts expose the complex
fragilities of modern masculinity, they also highlight the issues with consumer culture and
capitalism
Both texts explore skewed ideas of masculinity in response to society s narrow definitions, which
have evolved drastically in recent decades, particularly in the western world, with gender roles
becoming less and less absolutely defined and this can be seen as reasoning to why masculinity is
in crisis. Kimmel (1987) suggests that men are changing and the male role is being reformulated to
accommodate these changing times. Both texts were written in the 1990s, with American Psycho
being set in the late 1980 s during the Wall Street Boom, and this was a period of transition for the
perception of masculinity. Men began to steer away from the machismo stereotype, which had them
display exaggerated acts of masculinity, which often relied on sexism and exerting physical strength
to make males feel better about

Public Health Nutrition Personal Statement
Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted to do something special in life. I was born in a
small village in Mexico where public health and education were very limited. In 1996, my family
and I got the opportunity to move to the United States. This move brought me closer than I had ever
thought possible to accomplishing my dream of becoming a registered dietitian and working in
public healthnutrition. I have always valued my education because where I am from it was really
difficult to study beyond middle school. Here, in the United States, I have gotten the chance to
further my education beyond high school.
In 2009, I became a U.S. citizen and enrolled in Pellissippi State Community College (PSCC)
where I acquired my Associates in Science degree. While at PSCC, I had the chance to study
abroad and volunteer in Segovia, Spain, where I taught English to elementary school children. I
also assisted the nurses at Los Hermanos Franciscanos de la Cruz Blanca, a center for the poor
and disabled, where I helped with patient care, feedings, daily exercises and workshops. I really
enjoyed working with people that cared about others health and well being. It was a life changing
experience. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

“Critically Assess the Claim That Religious Language Is...
Critically assess the claim that religious language is meaningless Religious language has been
argued about by many philosophers to whether or not the ways in which we speak about religion
are relevant or meaningful. This issue of religious language looks at the way we talk about God,
debate ideas and communicate our theist or atheist ideologies. For some, religious language is
meaningful and full of purpose while others see it to being incomprehensible and pointless. The
Vienna Circle was made up of many great philosophers who were against metaphysics due to it
leading to illogical thoughts like there being another world to ours. This view transcended onto the
philosophical issue of religious language David Hume for instance ... Show more content on

Aquinas used the example of analogy to prove this. He believed any religious statements that you
make are being made from a human s perception and cannot be compared to the brilliance of God.
For example, you may get a good grade in an essay and you may claim that God is also good but
the two types of good are completely different. The univocal language that we use in day to day
life is not meaningless though it does help us to make connections between the world around us
and God himself. Analogy of attribution highlights words that can be applied to humans as well
as to God. For example, if you claim Anne is good and then say God is good then these are both
meaningful statements. When you state that God is good you are saying that he is the source
of all goodness because God is the creator and sustains all things. This is meaningful because the
statement God is good illustrates that if God created all goodness he must be good himself.
According to the analogy of proportion if you say my car is great then you are saying it lives up
to your expectation of what greatness is. If you say the religious statement God is a great God
you are agreeing that God measures up to what a great God should be. To Aquinas, this was
meaningful because you were expressing through analogy the goodness of God.
Although verificationists would argues that analogy, symbol and myth are all just as meaningless
as they can neither be verified nor

Business Information Systems in Your Career
Student Objectives
1. How are information systems transforming business and what is their relationship to
globalization? 2. Why are information systems so essential for running and managing a business
today? 3. What exactly is an information system? How does it work? What are its people,
organization, and technology components? 4. How will a four step method for business problem
solving help you solve information system relations problems? 5. How will information systems
affect business careers and what information systems skills and knowledge are essential?

The opening case, NBA Teams Make a Slam dunk with Information Technology, shows students that
even the professional sports industry has embraced technology as a way to enhance their employees
performance and increase their competitive advantage. Students will start to become familiar with
the idea that many different kinds of businesses have had to change the way they operate, even the
National Basketball Association (NBA). Their new emphasis is on using the Internet and
information technology to mine statistical data and turn it into useful information. The challenges
facing the NBA show why information systems are so essential today. The NBA is a business as
well as a sport, and it needs to help its member teams stay in business and increase their revenues.
Section 1.1, The Role of Information Systems in Business Today , gives students a feel for the
importance of information systems in business today and how they have transformed businesses on
the world stage. A good discussion of the six important business objectives outlined in this section
allows the instructor and students to openly discuss why businesses have become so dependent on
information systems today and the importance of these systems for the survival of a firm. Stress to
students that information systems are not a luxury. In most businesses they are the core to survival.
This would be a good time to ask students to discuss how their own schools are using

Cold Blood By Truman Capote, A Cold Blooded Killer
Without the basic necessities such as water and sunlight, a flower will not bloom into a beautiful,
colorful creation, but rather wilt into a brown, unrecognizable mess. Just like a flower needs
water and sunlight to thrive, a child requires support from a guardian to prosper in every aspect.
A secure support system t in a child s life creates healthy relationships as well as providing the
child with a positive perspective and mindset. However in the lives of Perry Smith, a cold blooded
killer in the novel In Cold Bloodby Truman Capote, child soldiers, and the children of the street,
support from the family is seldom displayed. The absence of support leads these persons to lives
filled with hostility and violence; lives of adversity. This goes to show, the absence of support
from a parent figure or family unit has negative impacts on a child s lifestyle.
Throughout numerous areas around the globe, the reality of children living on the street has
become a significant issue. This problem is mainly due to the family s inability to provide
adequate care and resources for their child, Children end up on the streets for a number of
reasons, many of which are rooted in family instability and poverty, (The Children of the Street).
Instead of worrying about what games to play or who to play with, these adolescents have to
worry about what they will eat for the day or where they will sleep for the night. Children who

Question 1
On page 1, the value gap is two fold. It signifies an under valuation of Seagate s core disk drive
operating assets due to unfavorable public market investor preferences. Furthermore, the value of
the Veritas share price has caused the Veritas stake to far outweigh the value of Seagate s stand
alone market capitalization. Since Seagate does not own at least 80% of the voting stock in Veritas,
distributing the wealth intrinsic in that stake to Seagate shareholders would prove difficult due to
the hefty corporate tax rate of 34% that would erode its full value. From a sum of the parts

In addition, the cash proceeds of the buyout of Seagate s operating assets will be distributed, along
with all the cash in excess of the $765 million delivered to the buyout investors, among the existing
shareholders of Seagate at the time of the buyout.
This happens through a down stairs merger. The remaining shell would be merged with Veritas and
in exchange Seagate existing shareholders are distributed new Veritas shares proportionally. This
unlocks the value of the shares without facing double taxation through the corporate tax of 34%.
The existing shareholders only incur a personal capital gains tax on their investment holdings. The
purpose of this part of the transaction is to successfully deliver the maximum amount of value from
the appreciation of the Veritas stake to Seagate s existing shareholders.
Question 3
By the end of 1999, Seagate had a BBB credit rating issued by S P for its long term debt. Based
upon historical operating performance, it would seem that Seagate s leverage ratio has high
volatility due to its high volatility in market value of equity and operational performance.
However, we believe that the current leverage ratio is above its optimal leverage because in 1998
the firm had a 2.72 EBIT interest coverage ratio using the greater debt load of $703 million on its
books. In the recapitalization for the leveraged buyout, a

Standard Work Breakdown attempts to format the project into a multi level WBS suited to estimate,

breakdown is also designed to facilitate the data transfer of a standard work breakdown between
common estimating, scheduling and cost control software applications. The International

The Pros And Cons Of Stay-At-Home Mom
Stay at home mothers are discriminated against in many ways. Stay at home mothers might be
considered lazy for choosing to stay at home and take care of their child instead of going back to
work immediately. Even if a mother is planning on going back to work after a while, she still isn t
treated the same as women without children. In Confessions of a Stay at Home Mom, Ashley
Nelson argues that taking time off of work after a womanhas a childcan be bad, women with
children may earn less pay, and mothers are less likely to be promoted. I agree with Nelson that
taking time off work can be bad, mothers may earn less pay, and mothers are less likely to be
promoted because taking off of work can cause women to get out of the routine of working full
time and we may not be able to do our best work as soon as we return.
Ashley Nelson s article, Confessions of a Stay at Home Mom, is about mothers and what they
should do about work when they have a child. Nelson argues that taking time off of work after a
woman has a child can cause her to not be offered the same jobs or benefits as a non mother or
male. Labor statistics show that while full time working women without children earn 7 percent
less than their male counterparts, women with children earn 23 percent less (Nelson 413). She
also states that mothers are less likely to be promoted than women without children. The sense is
that employers, consciously or not, demote mothers, assuming they cannot live up to the hours
and demands of the work place (Nelson 414). Nelson also argues that women should keep some
kind of a job after having children because they will be much more likely to get a new job or get
their old job back with more benefits, better hours, and better pay.
Nelson argues that taking a lot of time off of work after having a child can be bad. Nelson states
that even minor career breaks have dire economic consequences (413). This means that by
leaving a career, even for just a couple of years, can have bad consequences. I believe that Nelson
is correct because when women leave their job, they might have a hard time getting it back. Even
though a mother is leaving her job to take care of her child, she is still quitting her job. When

She was blessed to be an extraneous element in the story, which gives her the ability to live at either
Wuthering Heights or Thrushcross Grange. This ability proves to be useful when she must move to
the Grange with the first Catherine after her marriage to Edgar Linton. Throughout the story she
creates an intimate relationship with all the main characters, whether a nurse, housekeeper or
servant, she manages to produce an emotional link of friendship with these characters. One of the
most obvious examples of this is when Heathcliff tells her, near the end, that she is the only person
he feels comfortable speaking with, saying that the pressure within his mind is, so eternally
secluded in itself .
As a person of dignity, Nelly keeps secrets; as a nurse or servant, she reveals any unnatural or
wrong acts. As a witness, she must take part in every scene of the book. We become familiar with
her interference from when she admits putting young Heathcliff on the landing, to encouraging him

Foot Binding in China
In all societies, it was very common to have unequal treatment to men and women with the
justification being the gender. This shaped the attitude and behavior of people. This commonly
occurred to values, norms, customs, and laws in all societies. In the traditional Chinese society, it
was very common for the bride to obey her parent in laws, do housework, and have a low social
status within and outside of the household. Ancient China based its livelihood off of Confucian
principles. Confucian principles act as a guide for the people to live and behave according to.
Confucian principles included relationships such as the relationship of the emperor to his subjects,
a father to a son, elder brother to younger brother, husband to wife, and friend to friend. Traditional
China functions on these principles to guide the peoples lives. Women living in a Confucian society
played a limited gender role. Confucian principles were instilled very deeply into the Chinese
society; it was practice throughout Chinese history. Some practices of Confucianism are practiced
to this day. Women did not share the same privileges as men in a traditional Confucian society
because their role was to be the house wife that society shaped them into. The family structure in
China resembles the family structure of agricultural civilizations. It accentuates the importance of
unity and strength of the husband and the father in the family. Confucianism, although a religion

The Spanish American War And The Civil War
1.The Spanish American War was fought in 1898. It was a very short war and had very little deaths
compared to the previous wars and battles. The Spanish American War only lasted one hundred and
thirteen days. Even though the Spanish American war was a short war, it had many of very useful
world changing outcomes. The conflict began when the Cubans wanted independence from Spain.
Spain would not give Cubans their independence. The Cubans go tired of begging so eventually, the
United Statesgot involved, and it was an all out war against Spain. Toward the end of the
nineteenth century, tensions were high between Spain and Cuba. Jose Marti wanted
independence from Spain and the only way they believed they could do it was by declaring war
in 1895. Many of Americans supported the Cubans who were struggling for freedom because lots
of Americans were or still are in their shoes or knew who it felt to not have freedom. The
newspaper journalists played a huge part at the beginning of the Spanish American War as well as
during the war. The journalists published various articles talking bad about the Spanish government
and published exaggerated stories of how the government was treating their citizens in Spain. One
publisher wrote a letter to the ambassador in Spain expressing how he felt about him. He said that
the ambassador was a weak leader, and he did not know anything about politics. The letter started up

Review Of V. C. B. L. T. S. Ramachandran ( B )
For as long as he can remember, V. S. Ramachandran (b. 1951) has been fascinated by any kind of
strange phenomenon in nature. As narrated in chapter 1 (see here), at a very young age he began
collecting seashells from beaches near his home in Madras. In researching the subject, his attention
was drawn to the most peculiar varieties of seashells, such as the carnivorous murex. Soon he added
these unusual specimens to his collection. As he got older, he transferred this interest to abnormal
phenomena in chemistry, astronomy, and human anatomy. Perhaps he intuited that these anomalies
fulfilled some kind of purpose in nature, that what does not fit the pattern has something
interesting to tell us. Perhaps he felt that he himself with his passion for science when other boys
were attracted to sports or games was a bit of an anomaly as well. In any event, as he matured his
attraction to the bizarre and abnormal only grew.
In the 1980s, as a professor of visual psychology at the University of California at San Diego, he
came upon a phenomenon that appealed to his interest in anomalies in the deepest way the so
called phantom limb syndrome. In this case, people who have had a limb amputated continue to
experience sensation and pain where the limb used to be. In his research as a visual psychologist,
Ramachandran had specialized in optical illusions instances in which the brain would incorrectly fill

Persian Gulf War of 1991 between Kuwait and Iraq, conflict over oil and petroleum led to
catastrophic environmental degradation and consequences. Burning for about 7 months, fires
engulfed and towered over the Kuwait landscape as Iraqi forces set over 650 oil wells ablaze.
Washed over by poisonous dark smoke, soot, and ash, land combined with oil formed hardened
layers of tarcrete, and rain as black as night fell upon the sand. Animals and livestock died as their
lungs blackened from the toxic atmosphere, and the water in lakes was replaced with oil. Although
humannature ultimately created this disaster, the extent of their power does not expand to the point
where they can manipulate something like fire into a colossal environmental calamity. While fire
may frequently be associated with destruction and evil, it is an archetypal symbol that... Show more

The aftermath of the oil fires started by the Iraqis shows how much of a distinction there is between
humanity and nature. As man takes weeks, months, or years to destroy nature in order to establish
human necessities, like an unsuspecting wave, nature is able to wreak destruction on man in only a
few seconds.
Humanity s hunger for power goes beyond attempting to take it away from nature, but also trying to
take it away from each other; therefore, when man destroys man, the resulting factor of death
controlled by God

The Funeral Banner Of Lady Dai
The Funeral Banner of Lady Dai has several different symbolisms hidden within the paint and ink
on the sink banner. The symbol hidden within the banner can mean many things it just looked at by
themselves and so many more if looked at as a group instead of alone. The Funeral Banner of Lady
Dai relates to the phenomenon of interconnectedness between China, Korea, and Japan by unifying
these three countries by breaking geographic and language barriers and showing common practices
between them all. China was a big influence on both Japan and Korea, the banner may have also
had an influence on the art produced in both countries.
The Banner of Lady Dai banner was found in Lady Dai s tomb in 1972. The Marquis of Dai died
in 186 B.C.E. while the Lady Dai (his wife) and their son both died in 163 B.C.E. The true
function of funeral banners is debatable, so think they have a connection to the afterlife. Funeral
Banners were also thought to be name banners to identify a person during mourning ceremonies,
or shrouds to help soul into the afterlife (McIntire) or attract the spirit of the deceased to their
tomb where they were to spend the rest of eternity in comfort. It is believed that banners like this
were carried in front of the funeral procession, then draped upon the deceased coffin (Gunther).
The Funeral Banner of Lady Dai is painted Silk in ink and color and was commissioned most
likely by family of Lady Dai. The artist of the banner is unknown. The artist represented

The Nature Of Villain In The Destructors By Graham Greene
The Destructors, by Graham Greene Samantha Webber 10/13/17 A villain is someone who
commits deplorable actions against others by going out of their way to inflict harm on others. In
Destructors by Graham Greene, the character Trevor T. is presented as an evil person with
malicious intent, and is a villain because he is unsympathetic to others and destroyed someone s
home that meant very much to them. The nature of villainy allows the reader to understand the
theme of code of behavior. T. is unsympathetic toward others. In the climax of the story, he
intentionally destroys Thomas s house; one of the only houses left after the London Blitz built by
Christopher Wren. In the process, T. goes to almost extreme measures to make sure the house is
fully decimated; he locks Thomas in his own bathroom, leaving him there with small rations until
morning. T. came from an upperclass family, but then he came down in the world, implying that
something happened within the family that affected their career. Based on T. s determination to
destroy the house, I swear I can fix it, it can be inferred that T. wants to take out his resent about
losing everything on someone else. Also, having a lack of empathy can be linked with psychopathy,
a mental illness that prevents those who have from feeling sympathy, and are generally contain a
charming demeanor, like T., [T.] caught his elbow and supported him. T. shows a calm and polite
demeanor, giving the impression that he

Family Medicine And Family Practice
There are many misunderstandings where people mistakenly think that family medicine and family
practice are the same thing, but they are undoubtedly wrong. According to Brown, family medicine
is the academic discipline, composed of knowledge, skills and attitudes. Family practice is the
application of that knowledge in a system of medical care (Brown, 1979). Dr. Lynn Carmichael also
stated that, an important component in the definition of the family physicianis that he has a tenured
relationship in which the doctor and the family members have mutually agreed upon obligations.
No other physician has this unwritten contract with patients of all ages and with the whole family
(Brown, 1979). In other words, family practice consists of family medicine, but family medicine
does not consists of family practice. This is what makes family physicians unique from other
physicians. They have their own bond with the patients without having to having to have some
kind of written contract. It gives the patients time to understand and get to know the physician and
have an actual conversation. Whereas for other physicians there is a tendency where the physician
is having a one way conversation where the physician is only talking to the patient and the patient
is just listening. Family physicians are distinctively educated to care for you as a whole person,
apart from age or sex. They diagnose and treat critical and chronic diseases and illnesses and
provide patients with monotonous

Tough Guise 2
Rationale For my written task 1, I will write a satirical article describing a fraternity at a US
university. The subject matter will be mainly about masculinity, and how it would look if the ideal
traits of a masculine person were changed. I will be working with Part One of the English HL
course, specifically under the topic of language and gender. The text that I will be working with
will be the documentary that we watched, Tough Guise 2 . The task is meant to explore masculinity
through the lens of Learning Outcome 1.2, which is Analyze the impact of language changes .To
do this, I am going to change the language and ideas that are generally perpetuated from American
University Fraternity culture from chauvinistic and sexually aggressive to feminist and respectful.
The reason that I chose a satire is because I think that some ideas that Fraternities push on to their
members and the public about what it means to be a real man are ridiculous. The text type that is
most conducive to attacking ridiculous and unbelievable ideas is... Show more content on

The reason that this Fraternity sticks out so far from the rest is because they skip the traditional
fraternal activities such as charity and Community outreach and instead teach men what they re
recalling going to need to live a fulfilling life. Each chapter makes sure to only exemplify the
highest level of masculinity, with activities including mass sexual assault, alcohol poisoning, and
even team building activities like Cocaine trafficking to really prepare them for the workforce.
While some may argue that these activities are not as beneficial to man s future as the altruistic
acts that many run of the mill fraternities execute, SAE would have to disagree, saying that they do
real manly things and that those who do good for their communities are just whiny, pushover babies
and not nearly as much of men as those in the SAE

Potato Osmosis Lab
Introduction
Osmosis involves the movement of water molecules from an area with more pure water to an area
that has less pure water. The water molecules must pass through a membrane. The goal is for the
water to be equally dispersed throughout. There are different types of solutions that osmosis may
take place in. Things such as temperature, light and surface area will affect how optimally the
osmosis process will work. Reverse osmosis can be used to create systems that purify water. It can
also be used to produce and preserve different foods.

The Negative Use Of Technology And Young Children
Technology and Young Children
Technology is defined as a knowledgeable and skillful tool that provides a service to individuals.
Technology and digital media are tools that are used for teaching and learning. I will show how
technology can positively impact young children and how it can be used to benefit young children.
According to Positive Parenting technology and digital media provides the following benefits:
1.Cause and effect: allows access, curiosity, and exploration at a safe distance when monitored. At
a very young age children can start to perform a variety of actions and at a young age they are
aware of the outcome between those actions.
2.Enhances eye hand coordination is the movement of eye movement along with hand movements
simultaneously. Students tend to learn more when they interact with hands on learning devices or
tools that educational technology provides.
3.Fine tunes motor skills (pushing buttons, using mouse)
4.Encourages concentration and persistence that can build confidence and self esteem.
5.Increases technological competence. (BM, 2014)
Tablets are replacing the use of textbooks and social media is a commonplace for even the
youngest of users. When used intentionally and appropriately, technology and interactive media are
effective tools that can support young children s cognitive skills, social and emotional
developments. There are a variety of ways technology can be used at school and at home to support

What Does The Flowers Symbolize In The Chrysanthemums
Flowers are typically given to someone as an expression of love or friendship. However,
depending on a person culture, it can also mean mourning and or death. Example, carnations and
lilies represent mourning, but yellow Roses represents friendship; Red roses are seen as romantic.
Often times flowers have shown symbolism in different literary pieces. In John Steinbecks The
Chrysanthemums , the protagonist, Elisa s loneliness and confinement are represented by the
fenced in garden and growth of her chrysanthemums.
To begin The Chrysanthemums , is about a woman named Elisa who lives on a farm with her
husband. Throughout the entire story, it is evident that she feels lonely and trapped. This is
expressed through the symbolism of chrysanthemums.

The Importance Of Life In Ayn Rand s Anthem
Anthem depicts a world of the future, a collectivist dictatorship in which there is no individualism
and people are grouped together and given the same name to unify the group and strip away
individualism. The future as depicted in the novel
Anthem (1938) by Ayn Rand is an insight into what she came from in Russia, where communism
and
Stalinism a form of communism under the rule of Joseph Stalin, was the main form of government
in
Russia where all people get the same amount of everything. There are multiple connections between
the way of life where Ayn Randcame from and the way of life in her story Anthem. Ayn Rand gave
an example of how life was in Russia by talking through the story and reflecting her experience

The University Of New York
Allen and Dadgar (2012) utilized data on 22, 962 incoming college freshmen who were part of
the City University of New York s (CUNY) College Now program and had enrolled in a CUNY
campus within 15 months after high school graduation. This data was merged with data from the
New York City (NYC) Department of Education which included all high schoolstudents who had
been peers of the students in the CollegeNow dual enrollment program. The NYC Department of
Education data included extensive demographic information and test score data as well information
on institutional differences between high schools. This rich data set enabled comparison between
students who had participated in dual enrollment and comparable peers who had not participated. In
order to control for preexisting differences that were not reflected in the data set this study used a
quasi experimental analysis called the difference in differences. The results of this study confirm
the work of other recent quantitative analyses which have shown higher GPA s and reduced time to
graduation for dual enrollment students as compared to their peers. The authors suggest that this
study confirms the importance of academic momentum by demonstrating that students who are able
to gain credits before starting college also earn more credits once they are enrolled in college. This
study adds to the evidence that dual enrollment has a positive impact on postsecondary GPA and
time to graduation.

Death We Real Cool
Death in We Real Cool In Gwendolyn Brooks poem We Real Cool Seven African American high
school dropouts want everyone to admire them. These teenagers explain how they stay out late
playing pool, fighting, sinning and drinking. Though they believe they have everybody else
fooled, they know themselves that the destructive behavior they are taking part in will lead to
their death. The sluggard s carving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work
(Proverbs 21:25) The Bible makes a very clear statement in this passage as to how being lazy can
be the cause of one s death. In We Real Cool, Gwendolyn Brooks uses denotation and sound devices
to suggest that although humans may often think of themselves as being cool for... Show more

It is sad to see how these teenagers think of themselves as being cool because of the activities
they choose to do, when they each see how it is making them live a shorter life and none of them
are doing a thing about it. Life is worth more than feeling cool. Proverbs says, Since they hated
knowledge...the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will
destroy them (Proverbs 1:29a, 32). The teenagers in We Real Cool have an image of their selves
as being cool on the outside because of the badly behaved things they are taking part in and want
others to think them as being cool. These teenagers want to think that they are cool for doing the
things they do, but they know that the destructive life they live will soon be a factor to their
deaths. Brooks demonstrates in We Real Cool that even though people acknowledge their own
behavior and think of themselves as being cool, their destructive ways will be a part of their short
lives and none of their coolness will ever matter again.

Baptism Murders Michael Corleone
In the Baptism Murders , it starts with the main character Michael Corleone at his nephew s
baptism. As the priests begins to ask questions, he started having flashbacks of all the murders
he had his men commit. The look on his face was as if he had a guilty conscience. While the
baby was being baptized Michael answered the questions the priests was asking as if he was

baptizing and the murders. The scene closes out with the priest pouring the holy water on the baby
s head and Michael reflecting on all the dead bodies he had killed. The editing shows where the

The Theory Of The Climbers On Mount Everest
Tony Blair once said, The art of leadership is saying no, not yes. It is very easy to say yes.
Expedition Behavior stems from the overall tone set forth by the leader, however trusting all
participants to model the leader s standards is difficult. Both positive and negative expedition
behavior may be present on trips. The members of the team must learn to effectively discuss
concerns and celebrations as a group in order to inform the entire company of certain situations.
Arguing or ignoring requests from the leader results in bad expedition behavior, whereas trusting or
conferring anxieties appropriately with the leader usually develops into good expedition behavior.
In the case of the climbers on Mount Everest, both examples were present in the varying climbers.
Each member struggled with trials and tribulations and the end result paralleled the expedition
behavior expressed throughout the tremendously burdensome and laborious journey. The first
climber, Tim, displayed bad expedition behavior by arguing and ignoring Russell s commands. To
begin with, Tim left from camp twenty minutes later than planned, therefore resulting in a delay of
plans. Once Tim had started his trek up the mountain, he was trapped behind an injured climber
from another party. The additional delay lead to Tim running low on Oxygen, possible development
of frostbite, exhaustion. All of these factors contributed to Russell s decision for Tim to return to
camp without finishing the climb to the

  • 2. Ethnolect Essay Examples The speech of an individual is a linguistic map of their identity and an indication of how they would like to be perceived. Migrants who come to Australia already possess the linguistic structures of their mother tongue, and these will affect the way they speak English, forming an ethnolect. Consequently, a person s languageis a clear indicator of their past ethnic origins, and the English they choose to speak will also indicate how they would like others to perceive them. This latter is true for everyone, as we all vary our language according to context. Bill is a young Chinese student who has come to Australia two years ago from China to further his education. His lexical field is wide and varied, he is able to use complex syntactic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Leaving verbs in their base form is a feature of many Mandarin speakers, as in Mandarin, tenses are indicated by other means.... Another syntactic feature is the plural, which is sometimes not formed as shown before. For example, my family member , at those stage , a lot of country and different background . Such non standard usage also pinpoints Bill s identity as a Chinese speaker as there are no plurals for nouns in Mandarin. Bill s word order too is sometimes non standard, especially when expressing more complex ideas. For example, aging population faces in Japan rather than Japan too faces an aging population . All these syntactic features contribute to his identity as a young Chinese student still in the process of mastering the English language. A subject s attitude can also show what kind of speaker he or she would like to be perceived. For example, Bill states that he prefers the Australian accent over the Singaporean accent. This would show that he puts a high value on the Australian English and would like to be perceived as a English speaker From this, it can be seen that many features contribute to a person s ethnolect, and from it we can deduce the subject s identity and the way he or she wants to be perceived. Furthermore, migrants who come to Australia know that they must learn English, as Nothing unites a country ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The War Of World War II September 3, 1939 was the day that many people s lives changed. That is date of which Great Britain entered World War II. Great Britain would fight alongside the allied powers, which consisted of USSR, France, and US. The axis powers, which consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan, would try and bomb the allied powers into surrender. This brutal war would go on for nearly five and a half years, finally ending on May 8, 1945. The end of the war marked both celebration and mourning. For Great Britain some major turning points during the war were the Battle of Britain, and the invasion scare. Many families had to make sacrifices during the war, some of them life changing. The people of Great Britain refused to go to war and were in denial, many of them would not listen to future Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Churchill warned the people about Hitler and Nazi Germany . Because of everybody s fear of the war, Britain was not prepared when it came time for the country to enter the war. After World War I , Great Britain wanted to avoid any war at all costs. At the time, Neville Chamberlain was the Prime minister of Great Britain and he wanted to keep peace throughout the country. After the first world war, Chamberlain primarily focused on being in the League of Nations and that led to the deterioration of his armed forces and turn the focus to the inside of the country. The League of Nations was founded after World War I and it was there to ensure that war never broke out again . ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Conflict Diamonds Of Sierra Leone The conflict diamonds started to be present and problematic in Sierra Leone as soon as DeBeers mining company took control of all diamond prospects throughout this region. Although DeBeers was keeping a moderate watch on the trading and actions being taken through it, traders from Lebanon (bordered by Syria and Israel to the south) were able to easily smuggle and mine diamonds out through the company. Later towards the 1950s, countries, such as Sierra Leone, had to give up the chance of regulating the illicit diamondindustry, thus having to warn owners of the mines to provide their own security measures for the mines and land they owned. The issue wasn t justly political or economic until Sierra Leone gained its independence in 1961, letting Siaka Stevens enroll as Prime minister, therefore having a one party ruler. Stevens took control, and monopolized the diamond mines, as well as encouraging them to gain power and fame nationwide. Things were looking austere for diamond control rights and regulations, not only to watch a civil war emerge, surging through the country as fire fought fire and brother fought against brother. As the war extended from 1991 to 1999, it brought forth other problems as a result of citizen on citizen warfare for the diamonds such as rape, murder, and sex slaves. Once 75,000 lives were claimed, the people of Sierra Leone finally realized that victims and executors of these terrible crimes has emerged from the cash crop known as diamonds. Blood ... • 5. The Exploitation Of Land Is Justified Essay The economy today runs on an antiquated ritual of exploiting, plundering, devastation, and manipulation of land for material wealth, profiting the wealthy and condemning the poor. This mindset is no more sophisticated than feudalism, a system so bad it had to be outlawed along with witchcraft. The idea that exploitation of land is justified has brought plastics to the ocean and leveled rainforests. Large corporations have grown larger by manufacturing and production, depleting the planet s resources in the process. Now, companies must make a combined effort to put the environment first, before profit. Because of their harmful practices, consumers have the right to know where products come from, how they re made, and the impact on the environment. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the large corporations to change their harmful practices, to make strides towards ending climate changeand use clean, sustainable methods. With the combination of polymers that don t biodegrade and mass overproduction, companies are harming the environment in severe ways. Plastic, a material seen everywhere, is a polymer made from oil. It is mass produced to make everything from shampoo bottles to automobiles and does not biodegrade. When it is eventually thrown out, the waste usually finds it way into the ocean, where it is either buried under sediment or eaten by marine life (Weisman 287 295). Creating a material that will ultimately kill marine life will undoubtedly wreak havoc on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My hands drugged acrossed the soft cold leather, the color of dark forest green and black. From the kitchen my mom yelled that my jacket was in the closet. I slowly opened the closet hoping my jacket was the one on my bed. Sure enough it was, right then I slipped into my jacket. It was a little big on me so I would have it for at least three years. Looking at the jacket I could see my future, all the girls around me, hanging out with the cool kids. It is like my jacket was one million dollars. I slipped my jacket back on and looked in the mirror and realized that I would look good if I combed my hair. My sleeves ran past my hands so I rolled the cuffs up, and ran down stairs and hugged my mom like there was no life left in her Thank you! I screamed. I sprinted outside with my new style of hair and jacket. As I was outside I tried to avoid my hungry dog, so I could show everyone how cool I was in my new slick jacket. • 9. Descartes, Hobbes, and Pascal Essay examples Descartes, Hobbes, and Pascal During the 17th and 18th century, religion, religious beliefs and most of all the religious leaders played a very influential role in the direction of politics. This was also a time when religion and politics played a large role in the direction of what was accepted as a result of the new discoveries in the natural sciences and in a time when there were some very influential writers, philosophers, scientists and mathematicians. At the time, these people were considered to be very radical and revolutionary because of some of their beliefs and this often times led them to be highly scrutinized, criticized and sometimes even punished by the legal system. He gets himself to doubt everything and then assumes that doubt does exist. That is how he reaches to the conclusion of Cogito Ergo Sum , which means, I think, therefore I am . He realizes that if he can think, then he also exists, and he uses this also to prove the existence of God. He says that the body and the mind are two separate entities and the only thing that unites them is God. Descartes was very flattered to know how much people appreciate his writings and he assured that he probably would have had a better time with the church nowadays because they are more open minded. In the past, although Descartes believed in God, the Church did not like him a lot and that really depressed him. He realized that nowadays, the Church is not as strict as before because science has taken total control over the people and now is much more respected than before. As we can see, as time has gone by, he continues, science has divorced from the church and it seems that soon it will become like a separate religion because he was amazed how much people believe in all of the science s claims. The next author that will talk about is Thomas Hobbes. As we all know, he was the writer of the famous Leviathan, which was written in England on 1651. • 13. Blind Obedience in Shirley Jackson s The Lottery The author of The Lottery wrote this story to shock the story s readers with a graphic demonstration of the pointless violence and general inhumanity in their own lives (Jackson 211). This story reflects human behavior in society to show how although rules, laws or traditions do not make sense, people follow them. Throughout the story the three main symbols of how people blindly follow senseless traditions were the lotteryitself, the color black, and the hesitation that people had towards the prize. The lotteryin the story was the game in which the prize was death. In reality this lottery symbolized the game of life, and how our behavior as human beings influences our choices in life and therefore our destiny. In this case the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author uses this symbol to help readers relate the story to their everyday life more easily. In society people may think something is wrong but if they see a bunch of people doing it they ll go ahead and do it themselves. At the end of the story, when the winner was picked, the narrator says A stone hit her on the side of the head (Jackson 217). This quote refers that nobody saw who was the first one to hit her but as soon as the stone hit her head ВЁthen they were upon her (218). People at first were unsure whether to start throwing the stones or not, but as soon as one threw the first one, they all followed without hesitation. This story had a graphical representation that seemed to be abnormal or incoherent in the way it was presented, because in our society it is not normal and it is against the law to have a game in which the prize is death, but although it is not normal and against the law it happens in our everyday life. Although we do not have this kind of tradition anymore (within the United States,) we do have other rules, or laws, which instead of help people, it kills them little by little and some people decide to take justice in their hands. • 14. Motif And Motifs In Macbeth Sight of Darkness: Analyzing Murder Motifs in Macbeth Throughout Shakespeare s Macbeth, the motif sight represents a terrible event or murder; coinciding with the event, while also highlighting Macbeth s lack of accountability for the crimes. Through the use of the motif sight, it is conveyed that Macbeth decides he must turn a blind eye to the murder of Duncan. While trying to secure the throne he is prophesied to have, Macbeth frequently questions whether he should interfere with fate s process. After speaking with Duncan, Macbeth steps aside and states, The eye wink at the hand, yet let that be /which the eye fears, when it is done, to see (1.4.59 60). Macbeth s thoughts to kill Duncan are so evil when he does it that Macbeth doesn t want to look. In addition, the eye is a directly related to the brain, therefore, by winking, Macbeth tries to avoid acknowledging the evil he may commit. To conclude, Macbeth cannot stomach the thought of killing Duncan so he must turn a blind eye to it; he will try to literally not see it, and not acknowledge it cognitively. Another example of Macbeth turning a blind eye is after the killing of Duncan. Macbeth discusses with Lady Macbeth the remorse and guilt he feels. He states, I am afraid to think what I have done. / Look at again I dare not (2.2.66 67). Even after killing Duncan in attempt to claim the throne, Macbeth refuses to look at Duncan and his dead body. This again highlights Macbeth s refusal to condone his deeds as he cannot bare to look at what he has done. The final sight motif used by Macbeth precedes the murder of Banquo. Even after Duncan is dead, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth cannot stand idle and wait for the crown to be delivered to them; they decree to remove any threats posed to their succession. For this reason, they hire three murderers to kill Banquo. While talking to Lady Macbeth about their plans, Macbeth responds, Come, seeling night, / scarf up the tender eye of pitiful day / and with thy bloody and invisible hand (3.2.52 54). Similarly to the first passage, Macbeth is saying the actions of killing Banquo are so violent that it cannot be visible by the light of day. Additionally, there s Eclipsed, the first Broadway production be written, directed, and performed exclusively by black women, and The Color Purple, which centers around black actresses. The list goes on. What can Hollywood, learn from Broadway because they are obviously having their own struggling with diversity at the moment? [Reed Birney] So much. I mean, clearly [[00:00:30]] like what you just talked about in just the casting. But even beyond the diversity within the casting and the storytelling, I think storytelling in general. I think Hollywood is in a major drought right now, for actually capturing people s hearts and attentions and minds. [Alex Brightman] They re sacrificing talent over whatever sells tickets. I just think talent transcends anything else talent and drive and merit. I mean, I grew up thinking that show business was a meritocracy, and it is not,and especially in [[00:01:00]] Hollywood. Holding tight to your roots means remembering where you came from and what standards and ideals are important to you. In my aphorism when I say be open to the future it means being open to new ways of thinking and change later on in your life. My aphorism means remembering who you are but not letting that hold you back in the future. My aphorism is important because it tells you to remember who you are, where you came from, and to remember the ideals and standards that you have. Also, be open to other ideas or things happening in your life in the future. To me my aphorism means holding on to my ideals and standards and knowing where I came from. Even later on in life towards the future I will always remember who I am but be open to new things that are to come. My aphorism shapes and effects my decisions because when I make my decisions I remember who I am and my standards. I also know to be open to new things in life and new ways of thinking. The aphorism I have chosen has helped me to not be so stubborn. It has also helped me to be more open to change. My aphorism can help an individual because anyone can relate to it. Everyone has roots. Most people have a specific set of standards that they try to live by. My aphorism can also help by showing people what they already know but then expounding on that ideain the future. The good that people can find in my aphorism is the fact that it can relate to anybody s life. In my aphorism it talks about remembering who you are and where you came from but still being open to new things life. The good that it shows is remembering who you are but being open to the future to come. The effect of ignoring my aphorism is not being able to be open to new ideas and ways of thinking in the future. Not being able to remember your roots and where you came from. The Status of Women and The Bhakti Movement in India Originating in ancient Tamil Nadu, the Bhakti movement in India spread to the north during the late medieval ages when north India was under Islamic rule. The movement was spontaneous and counter to the predominant caste ideology which was dividing Hinduism. The adherents of the movement had their own rendering of devotional expression. While in the south, devotion was centered on both Shiva and Vishnu (in all his forms), the northern devotional movement was centered on Rama and Krishna, both of whom are believed to be incarnations of Vishnu. In contrast, while the male bhakti saints clamoured for change and protested against the injustices in society, the woman was still expected to be at the back of the home. The male bhaktas did not have any intention of including women in these changing times. One major exception to this is Nanak, who spoke for the empowerment of women. He wrote : It is by women that we are conceived and it is from her that we are betrothed and married It is a woman we befriend and it is she keeps a race going When one woman dies another is sought for and it is with her that we get established in society Why call her evil from whom are born kings and great men. • 19. How Does Palahniuk And Ellis Present Modern Masculinity It has been said that For many, masculinity is a fatal burden . In light of this statement, compare the ways Palahniuk and Ellis present modern masculinity. In the context of shifting gender roles and ambiguities, a crisis in masculinity has been identified in both Bret Easton Ellis American Pyscho and Palahniuk s Fight club . This crisis is defined by the new uncertainty of what it means to be a man in a modern world no longer in thrall to traditional models of brutish machismo with the roles of men evolving according to Kimmel, (1987) with the increasing independence of women due them gaining rights through means like the civil rights act of 1964 and Equal Rights Amendment which was passed by Congress and sent to the states for ratification in 1972. Both Palahniuk and Ellis consider this changing nature of this masculinity during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Against a backdrop of seemingly rampant capitalism, American Psycho represents the brutal conception of modern masculinity in the face of Western industrial decline and the rising status of women. Just 5 years later, Fight Club again takes up the question of masculinity but with the backdrop of a discredited world trade system and a satirical focus on the role of mass media and mass consumption. Whilst both texts expose the complex fragilities of modern masculinity, they also highlight the issues with consumer culture and capitalism Both texts explore skewed ideas of masculinity in response to society s narrow definitions, which have evolved drastically in recent decades, particularly in the western world, with gender roles becoming less and less absolutely defined and this can be seen as reasoning to why masculinity is in crisis. Kimmel (1987) suggests that men are changing and the male role is being reformulated to accommodate these changing times. Both texts were written in the 1990s, with American Psycho being set in the late 1980 s during the Wall Street Boom, and this was a period of transition for the perception of masculinity. Men began to steer away from the machismo stereotype, which had them display exaggerated acts of masculinity, which often relied on sexism and exerting physical strength to make males feel better about ... Critically assess the claim that religious language is meaningless Religious language has been argued about by many philosophers to whether or not the ways in which we speak about religion are relevant or meaningful. This issue of religious language looks at the way we talk about God, debate ideas and communicate our theist or atheist ideologies. For some, religious language is meaningful and full of purpose while others see it to being incomprehensible and pointless. He believed any religious statements that you make are being made from a human s perception and cannot be compared to the brilliance of God. For example, you may get a good grade in an essay and you may claim that God is also good but the two types of good are completely different. The univocal language that we use in day to day life is not meaningless though it does help us to make connections between the world around us and God himself. Analogy of attribution highlights words that can be applied to humans as well as to God. For example, if you claim Anne is good and then say God is good then these are both meaningful statements. When you state that God is good you are saying that he is the source of all goodness because God is the creator and sustains all things. This is meaningful because the statement God is good illustrates that if God created all goodness he must be good himself. According to the analogy of proportion if you say my car is great then you are saying it lives up to your expectation of what greatness is. If you say the religious statement God is a great God you are agreeing that God measures up to what a great God should be. • 28. The Pros And Cons Of Stay-At-Home Mom Stay at home mothers are discriminated against in many ways. Stay at home mothers might be considered lazy for choosing to stay at home and take care of their child instead of going back to work immediately. Even if a mother is planning on going back to work after a while, she still isn t treated the same as women without children. In Confessions of a Stay at Home Mom, Ashley Nelson argues that taking time off of work after a womanhas a childcan be bad, women with children may earn less pay, and mothers are less likely to be promoted. I agree with Nelson that taking time off work can be bad, mothers may earn less pay, and mothers are less likely to be promoted because taking off of work can cause women to get out of the routine of working full time and we may not be able to do our best work as soon as we return. Ashley Nelson s article, Confessions of a Stay at Home Mom, is about mothers and what they should do about work when they have a child. Nelson argues that taking time off of work after a woman has a child can cause her to not be offered the same jobs or benefits as a non mother or male. Labor statistics show that while full time working women without children earn 7 percent less than their male counterparts, women with children earn 23 percent less (Nelson 413). She also states that mothers are less likely to be promoted than women without children. The sense is that employers, consciously or not, demote mothers, assuming they cannot live up to the hours and demands of the work place (Nelson 414). Nelson also argues that women should keep some kind of a job after having children because they will be much more likely to get a new job or get their old job back with more benefits, better hours, and better pay. Nelson argues that taking a lot of time off of work after having a child can be bad. Nelson states that even minor career breaks have dire economic consequences (413). This means that by leaving a career, even for just a couple of years, can have bad consequences. I believe that Nelson is correct because when women leave their job, they might have a hard time getting it back. Even though a mother is leaving her job to take care of her child, she is still quitting her job. When someone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She was blessed to be an extraneous element in the story, which gives her the ability to live at either Wuthering Heights or Thrushcross Grange. This ability proves to be useful when she must move to the Grange with the first Catherine after her marriage to Edgar Linton. Throughout the story she creates an intimate relationship with all the main characters, whether a nurse, housekeeper or servant, she manages to produce an emotional link of friendship with these characters. One of the most obvious examples of this is when Heathcliff tells her, near the end, that she is the only person he feels comfortable speaking with, saying that the pressure within his mind is, so eternally secluded in itself . As a person of dignity, Nelly keeps secrets; as a nurse or servant, she reveals any unnatural or wrong acts. As a witness, she must take part in every scene of the book. One of the most symbolic instances of her interference is when she interweaves Heathcliff and Edgar s hair for Catherine s locket. In researching the subject, his attention was drawn to the most peculiar varieties of seashells, such as the carnivorous murex. Soon he added these unusual specimens to his collection. As he got older, he transferred this interest to abnormal phenomena in chemistry, astronomy, and human anatomy. Perhaps he intuited that these anomalies fulfilled some kind of purpose in nature, that what does not fit the pattern has something interesting to tell us. Perhaps he felt that he himself with his passion for science when other boys were attracted to sports or games was a bit of an anomaly as well. In any event, as he matured his attraction to the bizarre and abnormal only grew. In the 1980s, as a professor of visual psychology at the University of California at San Diego, he came upon a phenomenon that appealed to his interest in anomalies in the deepest way the so called phantom limb syndrome. In this case, people who have had a limb amputated continue to experience sensation and pain where the limb used to be. Baraka depicts the overwhelming strength of nature through action shots of Kuwaiti oil fires and their devastation in the post war state. In the Persian Gulf War of 1991 between Kuwait and Iraq, conflict over oil and petroleum led to catastrophic environmental degradation and consequences. Animals and livestock died as their lungs blackened from the toxic atmosphere, and the water in lakes was replaced with oil. According to Brown, family medicine is the academic discipline, composed of knowledge, skills and attitudes. Family practice is the application of that knowledge in a system of medical care (Brown, 1979). Dr. Lynn Carmichael also stated that, an important component in the definition of the family physicianis that he has a tenured relationship in which the doctor and the family members have mutually agreed upon obligations. No other physician has this unwritten contract with patients of all ages and with the whole family (Brown, 1979). In other words, family practice consists of family medicine, but family medicine does not consists of family practice. This is what makes family physicians unique from other physicians. They have their own bond with the patients without having to having to have some kind of written contract. It gives the patients time to understand and get to know the physician and have an actual conversation. Whereas for other physicians there is a tendency where the physician is having a one way conversation where the physician is only talking to the patient and the patient is just listening. • 51. The University Of New York Allen and Dadgar (2012) utilized data on 22, 962 incoming college freshmen who were part of the City University of New York s (CUNY) College Now program and had enrolled in a CUNY campus within 15 months after high school graduation. This data was merged with data from the New York City (NYC) Department of Education which included all high schoolstudents who had been peers of the students in the CollegeNow dual enrollment program. The NYC Department of Education data included extensive demographic information and test score data as well information on institutional differences between high schools. This rich data set enabled comparison between students who had participated in dual enrollment and comparable peers who had not participated. In order to control for preexisting differences that were not reflected in the data set this study used a quasi experimental analysis called the difference in differences. The results of this study confirm the work of other recent quantitative analyses which have shown higher GPA s and reduced time to graduation for dual enrollment students as compared to their peers. The authors suggest that this study confirms the importance of academic momentum by demonstrating that students who are able to gain credits before starting college also earn more credits once they are enrolled in college. This study adds to the evidence that dual enrollment has a positive impact on postsecondary GPA and time to graduation. Academic Impact of Dual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. Death We Real Cool Death in We Real Cool In Gwendolyn Brooks poem We Real Cool Seven African American high school dropouts want everyone to admire them. These teenagers explain how they stay out late playing pool, fighting, sinning and drinking. Though they believe they have everybody else fooled, they know themselves that the destructive behavior they are taking part in will lead to their death. The sluggard s carving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work (Proverbs 21:25) The Bible makes a very clear statement in this passage as to how being lazy can be the cause of one s death. In We Real Cool, Gwendolyn Brooks uses denotation and sound devices to suggest that although humans may often think of themselves as being cool for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is sad to see how these teenagers think of themselves as being cool because of the activities they choose to do, when they each see how it is making them live a shorter life and none of them are doing a thing about it. Life is worth more than feeling cool. Proverbs says, Since they hated knowledge...the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them (Proverbs 1:29a, 32). The teenagers in We Real Cool have an image of their selves as being cool on the outside because of the badly behaved things they are taking part in and want others to think them as being cool. These teenagers want to think that they are cool for doing the things they do, but they know that the destructive life they live will soon be a factor to their deaths. Brooks demonstrates in We Real Cool that even though people acknowledge their own behavior and think of themselves as being cool, their destructive ways will be a part of their short lives and none of their coolness will ever matter again. • 54. The Theory Of The Climbers On Mount Everest Tony Blair once said, The art of leadership is saying no, not yes. It is very easy to say yes. Expedition Behavior stems from the overall tone set forth by the leader, however trusting all participants to model the leader s standards is difficult. Both positive and negative expedition behavior may be present on trips. The members of the team must learn to effectively discuss concerns and celebrations as a group in order to inform the entire company of certain situations. Arguing or ignoring requests from the leader results in bad expedition behavior, whereas trusting or conferring anxieties appropriately with the leader usually develops into good expedition behavior. In the case of the climbers on Mount Everest, both examples were present in the varying climbers. Each member struggled with trials and tribulations and the end result paralleled the expedition behavior expressed throughout the tremendously burdensome and laborious journey. The first climber, Tim, displayed bad expedition behavior by arguing and ignoring Russell s commands. To begin with, Tim left from camp twenty minutes later than planned, therefore resulting in a delay of plans. Once Tim had started his trek up the mountain, he was trapped behind an injured climber from another party. The additional delay lead to Tim running low on Oxygen, possible development of frostbite, exhaustion. All of these factors contributed to Russell s decision for Tim to return to camp without finishing the climb to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
