Hourglass: a Library for Incremental Processing on HadoopMatthew Hayes
Slides from my talk at IEEE BigData 2013 presenting our paper "Hourglass: a Library for Incremental Processing on Hadoop"
Abstract:
Hadoop enables processing of large data sets through its relatively easy-to-use semantics. However, jobs are often written inefficiently for tasks that could be computed incrementally due to the burdensome incremental state management for the programmer. This paper introduces Hourglass, a library for developing incremental monoid computations on Hadoop. It runs on unmodified Hadoop and provides an accumulator-based interface for programmers to store and use state across successive runs; the framework ensures that only the necessary subcomputations are performed. It is successfully used at LinkedIn, one of the largest online social networks, for many use cases in dashboarding and machine learning. Hourglass is open source and freely available.

For the fourth year in a row, SoDA has compiled the thoughts and opinions of ≈700 marketers, agencies, technologists and digital industry insiders. Dozens of SoDA member companies have contributed thought-provoking articles and case studies to The SoDA Report (formerly known as the Digital Marketing Outlook). A broad array of guest contributors, CMOs and other senior-level digital marketers from a wide array of organizations (i.e., L’Oreal, Adobe, Google, Compete, E*Trade, Bloomberg and Samsung, among many other blue-chip brands) also provided their insights. The result: an invaluable planning resource for marketers and agencies in 2012. SoDA is releasing the publication in its traditional format today, and a tablet edition will be released in early March. SoDA will also be publishing smaller quarterly updates to The SoDA Report over the course of 2012.
The study, conducted by SoDA and its research partner, Econsultancy, revealed significant information regarding budgets, hiring strategies and what marketers value the most. For example, the 2012 survey showed that increased self-reliance is an increasingly common mantra among many marketing organizations, with almost two-thirds citing internal resource growth as their primary approach to expanding digital marketing efforts this year. For those looking outward, almost one-third said they’re seeking to diversify their agency mix based on niche areas of expertise (vs. pursuing a “one-stop shop” digital partner).
The publication also includes:
• 4 editorial sections (Industry Insider, Modern Marketers, People Power & Tech Talk), including related research findings from the 2012 Digital Marketing Outlook Survey. Content focuses on subjects critical to the digital marketing industry today, from evolving agency models and partner ecosystems to transformations at marketing organizations aimed at becoming more consumer-centric to finding and cultivating top digital marketing talent.
• One-on-one interviews with industry luminaries as well as panel discussions on topics ranging from change management to measurement and analytics.
• Case studies spanning a wide array of industries and digital platforms to inspire and inform.
Yahoo has long been involved in HBase and its community. In 2013, HBase was offered as a hosted service at Yahoo. Since then, adoption has grown rapidly., and today, HBase is used by numerous teams across the company, helping to enable a diverse set of use cases ranging from near real-time processing to data warehousing.
This was made possible thanks to HBase along with some enhancements to support multi-tenancy and scale. As our clusters continue to grow and use cases become more demanding we are working towards supporting a million regions in a single cluster.
In this keynote, we’ll paint a picture of where Yahoo! is today and the enhancements we have been working on to reach today’s scale as well as supporting a million regions and beyond.

Earlier this month, R2i Seattle hosted a pre-screening event for Tiffany Shlain's Sundance-award winning film, "Connected: An Autoblogography About Love, Death & Technology." The film delves into what it means to be connected in the 21st century. The internet and mobile technology have allowed us to learn and share more than ever before, and have conditioned us to desire and consume information at a quicker pace. Connectivity through technology has inherently affected the way we work, play and interact. After the screening we surveyed our guests on their thoughts about connectivity. Their answers are summed up in this infographic

Pitfalls of Social MediaSome disadvantages of social network.docxrandymartin91030
Pitfalls of Social Media
Some disadvantages of social networking are addiction, friendships, and how it can become a distraction. According to an article in the Huffington Post by Britney Fitzgerald, “forty-five percent of responders said they feel “worried or uncomfortable” when email and Facebook are inaccessible.” Now-a-days society has gotten so dependent to their social networking; they cannot even leave their house without taking their phones or laptops to school. People cannot stand to be without their phones without having anxiety, we need to establish a control over the technology. “It’s not being on social networks that makes people anxious. It’s being away from them.” We have grown into this new culture where we cannot even go to sleep without checking our phones, and what is the first thing we do when we wake up? Check our phone. In fact, in a recent study Mobile Mindset study by Lookout “54 percent admit to checking their phones while lying in bed.” The unfortunate price we pay for social networking is lack of sleep. A similar study from the University of Bergen found that “people with poor sleeping habits were most likely to be Facebook-obsessed.” It has become apparent that one has created this dependency on modern technology that we have added these aps such as Facebook and YouTube to our cell phones, since we cannot even wait to get home and check from our computers. We don’t even send invitations anymore; all we do is send a Facebook invite.
Another article in the Huffington Post, The Addiction and Cost of Social Media by Sam Fiaorella he states that “if you are not paying for the product, you are the product.” In this case social networking, the Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, they are all free however, you are wasting time, emotion and privacy. “According to Nielsen and NM Incite's The Social Media Report 2012, “consumers continue to spend more time on social networks than on any other type of Internet site.” “As of July 2012, the total time spent accessing and engaging in social media sites has increased 37 percent in the U.S., representing 121 billion minutes.”
Emotionally we put our lives out there on social networking. We are willing to share everything we do on a daily basis and post our feelings. We create an “online version of ourselves” in which we are able to let people see and know any “version” we allow ourselves to be. “A study by the University of Waterloo as reported in Psychological Science demonstrated that Facebook engagement can increase the likelihood of depression in some people.”
Privacy is often a forgotten factor in social networking; people seem to forget that whatever they post online can follow them throughout life. Some jobs even check your social sites to make sure you are right for the job. Social networks keep track what you are interested in, you may think its because they want to learn more about you however, “the more personal the information they can acquire the more they can .

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
