A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The Commonwealth of the Philippines
- 1. The Independence Mission, OS-ROX Mission, and The Tydings-McDuffie Act Presentation by Pancipane Rhealou S. Group IV Philippine History
- 2. 1919-1934- Filipinos campaigned for independence and sent twelve independence missions to America. On March 17, 1919, the Philippine Legislature passed the famous “Declaration of Purposes”, which stated the inflexible desire of the Filipino people to be free and sovereign. February 28, 1919- Senate President Quezon, left Manila to Washington. It consisted of 40 prominent Filipinos representing the political, educational, and economic elements of the country. The Filipinos were received by Secretary of War Baker, who extended to them the courtesies of the American nation. They presented the Filipino case before congress, and them returned home.
- 3. The failure of the First Independence Mission did not discourage the Filipino people. In subsequent years other independence missions were sent across the Pacific. The Second mission was sent in 1922, the third in 1923, the fourth in 1924, the fifth in 1925, the sixth in 1927, the seventh in 1928, the eight in 1930, the ninth in 1931(OSROX MISSION), the tenth (one-man mission consisting of Benigno Aquino) in 1932,the eleventh in 1933, and the twelve in November 1933. 1935- the Commonwealth of the Philippines was finally established. July 4, 1946- this was the preparatory step to the established of the Third Philippine Republic.
- 4. Also called as the OSROX Mission, after the names of Osmeña and Roxas . Headed by Sergio Osmeña, Sr. and Manuel Roxas . The economic condition of the United States worked on this mission. US Congress passed a bill granting our independence (Hare-Hawes-Cutting Act) Sergio Osmeña, Sr. Manuel Roxas.
- 5. In November 1931, the Philippine Legislature sent a mission to the United States to work for the passage of an independence law. U.S. Senator Harry B. Hawes filed an independence bill in the U.S. Congress, with U.S. Congressman Hare and U.S. Senator Cutting as co-sponsors. The bill was approved in December 1932, but President Herbert Hoover, vetoed the bill. The U.S. Congress repassed the bill on January 17, 1933 known as the Hare-Hawes-Cutting Act. The Antis were those who sided with Quezon in opposing the law. The Pros were those who supported the law and backed Osmeña and Roxas. Osrox Mission
- 6. The law’s provisions on trade relations were disadvantageous to the Philippines. He objected the provision limiting the immigration of Filipinos to the U.S. He also objected to the retention by the U.S. of military bases in the Philippines. OSROX claimed that the Hare-Hawes-Cutting Act was the best independence law that the Filipinos could obtain from the U.S. On October 17, 1933, the legislature rejected the Hare- Hawes-Cutting Act. The U.S. Congress enacted a new independence bill sponsored by Senator Milliard Tydings and Representative John McDuffie. Signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 24, 1934.
