The closest known flyby of a star to the solar system was a low-mass binary star system called WISE J072003.20-084651.2, also known as "Scholz's star". By integrating the orbits of this 0.15 solar mass binary system and the Sun, astronomers found that it passed within 0.25 parsecs (52,000 AU) of the Sun about 70,000 years ago, within the outer bounds of the Oort Cloud. This is the closest encounter with a star to the solar system that has been well-constrained in distance and velocity.
