The circulatory system transports oxygen, nutrients, antibodies, and removes waste through the heart, blood vessels, blood, lungs, and body cells. The heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs and oxygenated blood to the body through a double circulation. The circulatory system consists of arteries, which carry blood away from the heart; veins, which carry blood toward the heart; and capillaries, which connect arteries and veins and allow for gas and nutrient exchange. Common cardiovascular diseases include coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease.
