Batteries are packages containing one or more galvanic cells that store electrical energy through chemical reactions. A battery contains two half cells, one for oxidation and one for reduction, separated by an electrolyte. When a circuit connects the battery terminals, a redox reaction occurs where the anode undergoes oxidation by releasing electrons and the cathode undergoes reduction by gaining electrons, generating a flow of electricity. The electrolyte facilitates the movement of ions between the half cells to complete the circuit.

These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled Biz Models for Hi-Tech Products to analyze the business model for a bio-battery. Bio-batteries store energy with organic compounds often with glucose. Because glucose has ten times the theoretical energy density as does li-ion batteries, there is a high potential for bio-batteries. Already dramatic improvements have been made in this energy density. We recommend that firms initially target implants such as pacemakers. The bio-compatibility of bio-batteries can reduce the frequency of battery replacements, which are expensive and non-trivial. Other potential markets include the military, electric vehicles, and portable devices.

One of the portable and convenient sources of this electrical energy is a Battery. Battery is the basic yet most powerful part of any device. Thus a bio battery is an energy storing device that is powered by organic compounds. Bio-Battery generates electricity from renewable fuels providing a sustained, on-demand portable power source. By using enzymes to break down organic compounds, bio-batteries directly receive energy from them. Bio-batteries are alternative energy devices based on bio-electro catalysis of natural substrates by enzymes or microorganisms. This paper brings out an alternative solution to the conventional batteries which is not only a boon to the environment by being eco friendly but also it is an end to worries about non renewable and vanishing sources of energy.
