This document discusses volcanoes and earthquakes. It explains Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift from 1912 and how plate tectonics later improved upon this theory. It describes how the Earth's crust is made up of major and minor tectonic plates that are constantly moving. Volcanic and earthquake activity occurs along plate boundaries. It provides details on the different types of volcanoes and their distribution, as well as the measurement and distribution of earthquakes worldwide. As an example, it outlines the 2001 Bhuj earthquake in India.
This presentation includes introduction to Earthquakes, Seismic Waves, Shallow Focus and Deep Focus Earthquakes, Aftershocks, Earthquake Storms, Effects/Impacts of Earthquakes, Earthquake Predictions.
Earthquakes are the shaking, rolling or sudden shock of the earth’s surface. They are the Earth's natural means of releasing stress. Earthquakes can be felt over large areas.
Earthquakes cannot be predicted, although scientists are working on it.

Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. Alfred Wegener gave the Continental drift
Theory (1912)- millions of years ago
continents were joined together to a
super continent Pangaea; which broke
and horizontal displacement caused
formation of continents.
Plate tectonics improved continental drift theory by adding
concept of sea floor spreading
6 major and 20 minor plates
Plates are continuously moving; few millimeters per year
Tectonic activities occur along the plate margins
4. VOLCANOES
• Also known as mountain of fire
• Vent- circular opening through which
materials erupt suddenly
• funnel shaped hollow at top of the cone-
crater
6. DISTRIBUTION OF VOLCANOES
• Most of the active volcanoes form belt around
pacific ocean known as pacific ring of fire
• Second belt is found along Mediterranean sea
known as mid-world mountain belt {has
mostly dormant & extinct volcanoes}
• Fujiyama [Japan] is one of the worlds most
beautiful volcanic mountain
• Deccan Plateau formed due to fissure
eruption
7. EARTHQUAKE
• Shaking of earth’s surface caused by sudden
movement
• Place of origin of earthquake- focus
• Epicentre- point on
earth’s surface vertically
above the focus
• Intensity maximum
near the epicenter.
9. MEASURING EARTHQUAKES
• Intensity measured on Richter scale
• Earthquake tremors are recorded by
seismograph; the science that deals with it is
called seismology; earthquake scientists are
seismologists
• Intensity is measured in relation to the effect
on human life.
10. DISTRIBUTION OF EARTHQUAKES
Circum-pacific belt- coastal margins of North
America, South America and East Asia;
account for 65% of total earthquakes;
coincides with pacific ring of fire
Mid-continental belt- Alpine mountains,
Mediterranean sea, Northern & eastern Africa
and the Himalayas; 25%of seismic events
Mid- Atlantic ridge belt- Mid Atlantic ridge
and the adjoining islands; moderate
earthquakes due to moving of lithospheric
plates in opposite direction.
11. BHUJ EARTHQUAKE (2001)
• Earthquake at Kachchh region at 8:45a.m. on 26 Jan 2001
• Buildings collapsed, communication and power lines
completely disrupted
• Intensity- 8.1 on Richter scale by Indian Meteorological
Department
• About 50,000 were killed and more than 5,00,000 adversely
affected
• Reasons-
Sea floor spreading of Indian ocean @5cm/year
Gradual northward movement of Indian plate
Reactivated faults below surface of kachchh region
