The camel is a large desert-dwelling mammal that stands up to 7 feet tall and weighs up to 1,600 pounds. It has long legs and neck, two toes, and tufted tails, and lives in hot, dry regions of northern Africa and Asia. Camels are able to survive for weeks without water by closing their nostrils to keep out sand, and eat local vegetation using their strong lips. They are well-adapted to desert life and have been used by humans for transportation and milk for centuries.
