Despite recent efforts in innovation, the rise of technology and the consistent changing of pedagogy, a
range of studies have recently shown that students may be exiting the schooling system because of the
disconnect between this system and the new digital world which 'digital natives' (ref) have become
accustomed to in their formative years.
A number of papers have pointed to the disconnect, disassociation and discontent of students and their
perception of the provision of education and its quality in relation to digital transcendence and pedagogy
(Dede, 2005a; Denham & Gadbow, 2002; Geraci, 2005; Howe & Strauss, 2000; O 'Neil, 1995; Oblinger,
2003; Strauss, 2005; Zemke, 2001).
So what has changed so dramtically? How have we come to a point where students feel so disaffected
that leaving the learning environment altogether seems the only viable option? Recent deficits in student
outcomes in traditionally held values of literacy and numeracy have led some schools across state,
private and international sectors to adopt new focus on these areas, under very traditional measures, but

Before I attended the first day of this class, I thought that most of classmates would be environment,
geography, and urban studies major students because I thought that Portland's water was related to
environment, hydrology, and urban studies. However, when I attended the first day of class, several

Socially Acceptable Behavior and Protests The current state of national and even international protests is
one that has engendered a great deal of conversation and debate. The level of damage caused by the
existence of protesters in many different cities in the nation, has been felt financially and emotionally by
those involved and those on the outside and also by the private and public entities charged with the job of
cleaning up the messes. The manner in which the occupy movement evolved over time demonstrates a
significant social movement and responses by officials that responded to concerns all over many cities
where protesters gathered. As someone who was witness but not a participant in the protests there were
many questions despite wholehearted agreement in the cause that was being protested, income disparity
and the privilege of the wealthy. This writer was keenly interested in how the occupy movement evolved

During the 1800's there was controversy over the land owned in the United States. There was an act put
into place by President Andrew Jackson called the "Indian Removal Act". The act stated the Native
Americans who lived east of the Mississippi River had to relocate west of the Mississippi, regardless if
the land was foreign to the natives. Oklahoma was the place that the leaders of the United States called
"Indian Country". Some Pacific Northwest tribes were taken to Oklahoma, but were like rubber bands,
shot back. The tribal members went back to their original homes, or where their ancestors came from.
After warfare because of land, the United States signed treaties with the tribes in order to give them a
piece of land called Reservations.
The next leap in colonization of American was to get all the people in the nation on the same page;

This research work focus on Compressive strength, flexural strength and Bond strength of Conventional
Concrete (CC) and Class C fly ash blended concrete incorporation with Natural Admixture. Broiler hen
egg was used as Natural admixture (NAD) to study the effect of NAD on strength properties. The Class
C fly ash was replaced to cement at various levels and NAD was replaced to liquid and identified the
optimum replacement level of Class C fly ash and optimum dosage of NAD by maintaining the constant
liquid contant 0.55 to achived M20 grade concrete. The compressive strength, flexural strength and bond
strength of concrete for both CC and FA concrete. The studies reval that the optimum replacement of
Class C fly ash is 25% and optimum dosage of NAD is 0.25% based on strength results.

The program focused specifically on neighborhoods and households. The case study from Portland,
Oregon was on the city level where reducing and disconnecting paved surfaces took place from 1993–
2001 and the city paid homeowners $53 for each downspout they disconnected themselves, or they
offered to provide the service to households for free through volunteer groups. Downspouts need to be
replaced approximately ten years installation and maintenance is minimal besides ensuring the drainage
area is functioning properly and not eroding as well as making sure the spouts are clear of debris, holes,
etc. The total cost of the program was $13 million, and 56,000 downspouts were disconnected, which
remove a total of 1.3 billion gallons of stormwater from their combined sewer system each year.

politics", presented views of Portlanders who have rejected adding fluoridation chemical to the city's
clean water supply.1 In September 2012 Portland city council approved adding fluorine to the city's water
supply.1 However, public outrage soon ensued leading to a special election to protect the water supply.1
In May 2013, Portlanders voted 61% to protect their clean water supply.1

the current Portland Plan may leave little breathing room to accommodate the integration of future

Analysis Of Dale ( 2001 ) Looks At Sustainable Development...
Although humans know they are slowly damaging the environment in which they need to survive, they
continue to do so. Dale (2001) asserts that it may be as a result of feeling powerless to reverse the
situation; therefore their efforts are often futile. In order to truly see sustainable change, Dale (2001)
believes there must be collaboration between different levels of government, and aggressive action taken.
Throughout the book, Dale (2001) looks at sustainable development through three main lenses:
ecological, social, and economic. She asserts that each lens is different, but equal in importance to make
a more sustainable future (Dale, 2001). Although this book was written in the context of both Canada and
the larger global society, I feel that Dale's (2001) lessons are relevant to the United States, and are worth
sharing for this book report project. Further, based on the examples of cities we have studied so far in
Green Government Initiatives, it seems as though many cities are following her advice. This book review
will consist of a further look at the three main components of sustainable development mentioned above,
examples of how cities in America are applying the concepts, and will conclude with recommendations
for the future. Dale (2001) was especially interested in paradigms surrounding sustainable development.

Introduction Urban sustainability is a very important topic that needs to be addressed and focused on so
that cities and communities all over the world can change and reduce their harmful impact on the
environment. In order to do so, communities must develop sustainably by focusing on how to manage

Dams can flood some ecosystems while drying up others while at the same time changing water quality
and the chemical, physical and biological processes of river ecosystems (science bulletins). The most
noticeable result of dams that has been seen, however, is the negative effect it has had on many vital fish
species, especially migratory or andromonous fish species. Of all species that have been affected by
hydropower dams the Atlantic salmon is perhaps the most in danger of losing its battle to survive.
Atlantic salmon start their lives in freshwater rivers and after maturing migrate to the Atlantic Ocean.
They then return to these very rivers in which they were reared to spawn. They were once prevalent as
far south as Long Island Sound in New York, now they are mostly found north of the Connecticut River
in the U.S., mostly in Maine Rivers. Salmon were considered threatened on September 20, 1995 and

Over the course of the semester, our class has learned about cities in the United States that have gone
above and beyond to develop green government initiatives that benefit both communities and the

The city's top three energy goals include increasing overall city energy efficiency by 5%, city building
energy efficiency by 10%, and the renewable energy usage by 20 megawatts (City of Chicago, 2015a).
Further, since 71% of carbon emissions come from the energy used by buildings in the city (City of
Chicago, 2015a), it is unsurprising that government has taken notice. As stated by the City of Chicago
(2015a), a goal has been set to increase renewable energy use 25% by the year 2026. Reductions in

Athletic Training History
I have always loved sports ever since I was a little kid. Some of my earliest memories are of playing
soccer with my friends on a wet, cold spring day or hitting a ball off of a tee and feeling like it went a
mile, when in reality it only went about fifty feet. Even to this day I still can never get enough of sports. I
get about four weeks off out of the entire year where I'm not technically in a sport, but I'm still always
practicing and trying to get better because that's the only way I know. I love everything about sports: the
friendships, the competition, the passion, the atmosphere, the unity. Sports are one of my true loves and

This was how it was for a general athletic trainer in the beginning but over time the field gained more
and more credibility and in the 1930's a group of athletic trainers came together to try and form an
organization (Evolution of Athletic). This organization was designed to share different practices from
different areas of the world and nation. Though shortly after the beginning of World War II the
organization fell apart with the enlistment of many men into the army to serve (Evolution of Athletic).
After the war had ended, athletic trainers began to return to work and succeeded in creating the National
Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) in 1950 (NATA.org). The NATA was created by a group of two
hundred ambitious athletic trainers that met in Kansas City, Missouri to talk about the need for
professional standards and appropriate recognition (NATA.org). This set of standards presented by the
NATA provided athletic trainers across the country with professionalism, education, research, practice
settings and certifications for them to operate by (NATA.org). In 1970, the NATA Certification
Committee was put in place to oversee the first certification exams (Evolution of Athletic). By 1982, the
NATA had reached an agreement with colleges on a curriculum for college students to earn a bachelor's
and master's degree in athletic training (Jenkins). The Board of Certification was established to provide a
certification program for entry–level athletic trainers to reassure that all certified athletic trainers were
educated and professional before they began their career (Evolution of Athletic). In 1990, athletic
training was recognized as an allied health care professional by the American Medical Association

The Criminal Justice System in the United States of America was established with noble intentions. The
basis of the system can be traced back from the first book of the Bible Genesis, and the story of Cain and
Able. The criminal justice system was established to be morally suitable for a growing diverse society.
Moral dilemmas within the system arise from concerns related to principles of officials' right and wrong
behavior. These principles are often embedded into a culture of the human character, in other words,

Moral issues within law enforcement, the courts and the corrections system have made it complex and
difficult to navigate fairly throughout the criminal justice system. Enforcement strategies, court practices
and the incarceration rates have created discrimination towards minority groups. Carelessness and
unintentional actions are moral issues. The criminal justice system has failed to account for operational
procedure which creates the perception of discrimination.
The moral issues with law enforcement, with many questionable practices, have damaged public trust. A
New York Times' story relays a graphic breakdown of police stops by race: blacks made up 55 percent of
all stops in 2009, though they are only 23 percent of the city's population; whites accounted for 10
percent of all stops, though they are 35 percent of the city's population; Hispanics made up 32 percent of
all stops, though only 28 percent of the population, and Asians, 3 percent of all stops and 12 percent of

Abstract Today, the Republic of Azerbaijan occupies a critical juncture between central Asia, Europe, and
the Middle East. Despite some significant challenges, Azerbaijan currently enjoys a healthy petroleum–
based economy that is being increasingly diversified by the public and private sectors to promote travel
and tourism in this ancient land that enjoys a modern infrastructure and a wide range of cultural–heritage
tourism destinations. Although many of the country's most widely acclaimed destinations for
international visitors are located in its capital, Baku, there are numerous archeological and historical sites
located in neighboring towns and regions as well that can form the basis of a comprehensive cultural–
heritage tourism operation, providing certain factors are taken into account in formulating the destination
offerings. The Azerbaijan tourism industry has failed to provide positive returns on its investment
because the income that has been generated by tourism industry has grown at a slow pace and gross
domestic product attributable to the tourism industry has actually fallen in recent years. Consequently
studies such as this can help identify best practices to speed industry growth and improve the return on
