e live in an age of utmost human prosperity and humanity’s magical
Wupliftment towards excellence. Technology has spread up its wings to
turn the world into a bed of roses with its brand-new inventions.
However, everything in the world comes with a bane and a boon. Technology is also
no exception.
While on one hand, digitization of each and everything has decreased human efforts
in a huge way; at the same time, it has become pretty obvious that too much comfort
has started to affect the human physique and human consciousness in a terrible way.
Its deteriorating effects like overuse of social networking sites have started to
overpower the human brain and mental health in an unusual way, the young adults
and school children being the main victim. Thanks to those educational institutes
which have adopted and implemented the new trend of Mindfulness as a preventive
measure to improve the students’ mental health and empowering them to stand out
in any future hazardous situations.
Practice of Mindfulness and meditation can help in increasing the success rates in
the schools and colleges. In the words of Arnaud Desjardins, the renowned French
author, “Mindful and creative, a child who has neither a past, nor examples to
follow, nor value judgements, simply lives, speaks and plays in freedom.”
Mindfulness is purposefully paying attention, in the present moment, without
making any kind of judgement. It is the blessing of mindfulness that enriches our
lives with happiness and peace whenever our journey of life gets interrupted by
hardships and anxieties. Mindfulness is a secular philosophy and set of techniques
adapted from ancient Buddhist meditation traditions— that have only recently
harnessed by the mainstream Western consciousness.
It is not surprising anymore that mindfulness has already been made its way into the
modern classroom. This implementation of ‘mindfulness’ in the state-of-the-art
curriculum has led to significant achievements for the students. The impact of the
implementation of Mindfulness in Education is undeniably far-reaching.
Mindfulness improves the students’ focus in the classroom. This is the practice that
definitely improves the attention span of the young children. Practice of Mindfulness
reduces stress and anxieties in older students helping them increase their
concentration level and perform better. Apart from that, Mindfulness with its
ever-charming affects helps students in developing a strong sense of self-esteem,
compassion and gratitude. A Mindful journey develops and creates a bond between
faculty and students. It develops peacefulness, receptiveness, willingness, and
accepting mindsets in individuals paving the way for strong bonds between students
and their teachers. The concept of mindfulness is simple and practice of this art fills
lives with peace, gratitude and joy.
Trends in education will come and go and new horizons will open up to achieve
success and excellence. Amidst all the magic and miracles of digitization and
gamification of education, Mindfulness is bearing amazing results for millions of
decades. With its all-amazing benefits, Mindfulness might be worth a second look! T R

SCHOOLS IN
12. Founded by a group of pioneering American parents
in 1956, Singapore American School has been on
the leading edge of preparing students for their
future. Initially, it opened its door to 105 students on King’s
Road campus. With the passing waves of time Singapore
grew, and so did the school. Growing over six decades and
through four campuses, SAS has satisfied the real needs of
families and provides students from preschool to grade 12
with an exemplary American education with an
international perspective.
State-of-the-art Infrastructure and Facilities
Singapore American School is a non-profit school with
over 600 faculty and staff. The school has 388 faculty
members, 74 percent of whom have earned master’s
degrees or PhDs. The school invests heavily in professional
development and continually sends teachers across the
globe to discover innovative ideas and best practices from
influential educational institutions.
There are 3,970 students from over 50 nationalities enrolled
at SAS.
An SAS education involves deep and lasting learning in an
academic community among people with varied learning
styles, experiences, cultures, and global perspectives.
State-of-the-art facilities on a 36-acre campus include four
libraries, modern science laboratories, three auditoriums,
five air-conditioned gymnasiums, two outdoor covered play
areas, three swimming pools, three cafeterias, five tennis
courts, a 1000-seat stadium, track and field, baseball,
softball, soccer, rugby fields, and an air-conditioned
climbing wall.
With open and airy walkways, tropical courtyards
throughout the campus and a 1.6 acre natural rainforest,
SAS students have the place and space to explore areas of
interest and pursue their passions; all while being nurtured
in a tight-knit community.
The Strategic Anchors
SAS is renowned for its commitment towards innovative
education, personalized learning, and extraordinary care.
With a mission to provide each student an exemplary
American educational experience with an international
perspective, SAS is committed to providing innovative
education. While the institute strives towards the vision,
SAS recognizes that to be truly exemplary, they need to
have an organizational culture that is well-defined and
deliberate. As such, they have identified three essential
cultural components or ‘strategic anchors’:
· Culture of Excellence,
· Culture of Extraordinary Care and
· Culture of Possibilities
These three strategic anchors guide the vision for the future
of SAS and have created a filter that helps them to make
every decision, and pursue every activity in the best interest
of the students.

who wish to pursue college-level study while still
in high school.
Learning at SAS is a process of discovery and transformation
by pursuing individual passions and encountering new ways of
viewing the world. The high school courses are directly aligned
to the vision of SAS and foster the skills students need to
develop into exceptional thinkers. SAS programs are designed
to prepare students for the demands of the 21st Century and
provide students with additional opportunities to differentiate
themselves in the college application process.
The SAS world language program offers instruction in three
different languages: Chinese, French, and Spanish. The goal of
the World Language program is to establish an understanding
of the respective cultures and to develop language proficiency
through a focus on communicative ability. SAS also launched a
Chinese Immersion program in Kindergarten in the 2017-18
school year.
The SAS Catalyst Project
The SAS catalyst project is a cultural, instructional, and
course-specific student-directed self-study project where high
schoolers work with a mentor in a relevant field on a
school-based to the work-based learning experience, aimed at a

results-oriented, and time-bound goal. Every project is a
minimum of one semester long and students are challenged
to design and create their own learning experience by
pursuing an area of interest. They get to merge their
passions with academic learning and develop academically,
intellectually, socially, and emotionally. As students design,
plan, and conduct their projects, they are taught how to
employ regional and global professional networks in and
beyond Singapore, starting by working with a mentor from
an academic field or profession related to their passions.
The world-class teachers in SAS provide student-centered
guidance, support, and extraordinary flexibility, focusing
instruction on the school’s desired student learning
outcomes, development, and assessment within authentic
contexts such as work studies, apprenticeships, internships,
and scientific research. Mentors offer students greater
meaning, purpose, and insight while they work on their
projects, bringing highly relevant knowledge, skills, and
experiences through authentic guidance and real-world
opportunities.
Exploring Life beyond Comfort Zone at SAS
SAS has a rich history and heritage, producing exemplary
graduates who achieve lifetimes of success. It maintains a
staggeringly good track record of graduate success, with
100 percent of last year’s seniors gaining acceptance to
universities all over the world or enrolled in Singapore
National Service. Among the
universities that SAS grads have
gone on to are University of
Cambridge, Columbia
University, Cornell, MIT, the
University of Oxford, and Harvard.
At SAS, students are afforded every possible opportunity
to explore interests, delve into passions, and discover their
true self through experiences that ultimately shape them.
Students gain experiences that are incomparable to any
other school; experiences that open their eyes, not just to
their own potential, but to the untold potential of
professional life after study.
The academic visitors-in-residence program brings
renowned authors, illustrators, artists, and actors to
campus to work with students. The program allows
students to understand the craft and work of professional
artists and develop relevant learning skills in relation to
creativity and different modes of communication. These
visits result in a greater sense of community that connects
the head and the heart.
At SAS students across all divisions, are given plentiful
opportunities to participate in service learning. Students
participate in a direct or indirect action, advocacy, or
research, and present their findings in a public forum.
Service learning at SAS focuses on building partnerships
and contributing to the community.
15. Let’s Meet the Astute Leader of SAS
Dr. Chip Kimball is the Superintendent of
Singapore American School, one of the largest
single-campus international schools in the world.
Since his arrival, Dr. Kimball has led SAS
through a process of continuous improvement
building on a rich legacy of success. This “R&D”
process is resulting in more project-based
learning, interdisciplinary courses, curriculum
supporting 21st century learning outcomes,
personalized learning, language immersion
programs, advisory, and new advanced topics
course offerings. Under Dr. Kimball’s leadership,
professional learning communities have become
central to the school’s work, resulting in
recognition as one of the only model PLC
schools outside of the US.
Dr. Kimball joined SAS after 16 years where he
served as chief technology officer, assistant

becoming superintendent in 2007 in the Lake
Washington school district (WA). His work in Lake
Washington resulted in multiple awards and
recognition as one of the most innovative school
districts in the United States. In 2010, Dr. Kimball
was awarded a national award for technology
leadership and was also awarded Superintendent of
the Year by the Washington Library Media
Association. Prior to Lake Washington, he worked for
the California Center for School Restructuring,
providing leadership to 144 schools in 101 districts
implementing education reform.
The Golden Pages of Glory
As a pioneering school on the leading edge of
innovation, SAS has undergone a rigorous multi-year
research and development process with administrators
and faculty visiting more than 100 forward-thinking
and innovative schools worldwide. The process
challenged deeply held assumptions, engaged faculty,
and took on the challenge of transforming an existing
successful school to better serve students well into the
future. The exercise resulted in the strategic plan of
SAS which focuses on five priorities: professional
learning communities, a standards-based approach,
high-impact instructional practices, pastoral care, and
systems that support learning. In a culture of
excellence, SAS students have all kinds of
opportunities for growth and success.
SpaceX’s Falcon 9 which successfully lifted off from
the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, United States,
and sent the Dragon spacecraft into orbit. This
spacecraft was carrying an experiment built by SAS
students — the first-ever experiment to be sent to
space by high schoolers in Singapore.
Kartikye Mittal, a 2016 graduate, used his SAS
achievements to find his way into the world-renowned
UC Berkeley. After being granted permission to
complete a one-semester internship at Stanford,
Kartikye used the opportunity to work on PocketQube
Sat for his senior project.
Within a culture of possibilities, like at SAS, students
are continually encouraged to achieve dreams they
have yet to dream of and believe that nothing is
impossible in the pursuit of excellence.
Words of Trust
It’s hard to boil down my experiences into one

most proud of having been able to secure my future
for the next four years. Applying to and affording
college, and generally knowing where I would be in a

senior year.

My track coaches have been my biggest

I was lucky to have met adults that truly

but as people. Mr. Shriner, Mr. Moineau,

20. The world of education is changing; and for good. In
the newly emerging schooling systems knowledge
is being made more practical, application-based,
and is tailored differently for every child. The education
sector is drifting away from the widely established
‘guideline of learning’, which is “what to study” and
moving in the direction of “how to study”. This change will
equip the children to cultivate the qualities of life-long
learning and help them identify their strengths and
weaknesses and likes and dislikes from the very start.
Stamford American International School is one of the
pre-eminent international schools in Singapore that aims to
inspire students to create their unique dreams; academically,
“Stamford American International School aims to cultivate a culture
of optimism, excellence, and empowerment for everyone by
developing the mind-set and skills to thrive in a complex world.”

culturally diverse world. It is the country’s first and the only
school that offers the full International Baccalaureate (IB)
and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. It renders the best
start to the life of children, between the ages of 18 months
to 18 years. Stamford is fully accredited by the IB World
School, the Western Association Schools and Colleges
(WASC), Council of International Schools (CIS) and
Edutrust.
The school is centrally connected to the major expatriate
area of Singapore. It has two purpose-built campuses- The
Early Learning Village campus and the Woodleigh campus.
Both the campuses are carefully designed to promote
enhanced learning and provide exclusive facilities.
Stamford is the home for a globally diverse student
community of over 70 nationalities.
Academia at Stamford
The institute offers an Academic Field Studies Program,
starting from Grade three. It explores the academic
curriculum within fascinating and often challenging
environments beyond the
classroom. It demonstrates the
importance of taking
responsibility for one’s own life
journey. Developed in
consultation with experiential
education market-leaders-
‘JUMP! Foundation’, this
program aims to develop students
as ecologically literate,
compassionate, and engaged
global citizens.
For children as young as 18
months, the early learning
curriculum of the school is guided
by the USA Head Start Early
Learning Outcomes Framework.
It starts at birth and outlines the
skills, behaviors and
developmentally appropriate
milestones to foster the growth of
young learners.
The “All-In-One” Curriculum
With an aim to develop its
children to become bilingual and to excel in communication
skills, Stamford has a World Language Program that offers
three of the world’s most spoken languages- Mandarin,
Spanish, and English. Additionally, it organizes a weekly
and optional mother tongue program led by the parents.
With more now different mother tongue languages offered
in this, such as Swedish, Finnish, Dutch, French, Russian,
Tagalog, Hindi, Hebrew, Norwegian, Portuguese, and
Spanish, children are taught by native teachers and have
access to classroom facilities, IT support, library and event
space to host special activities.
Along with this, the school has introduced music from
Pre-Nursery at 18 months with songs and dance, moving on
to theory and technical aspects of music in the Elementary
and Secondary school. This helps to foster creative
development and emotional awareness in the children.
Further, to nurture the students’ passion for drama, it has
weekly drama classes in its curriculum for children of age 5
to Grade 10. For those keep to pursue performing arts,
Stamford offers an IB diploma in US or UK theatre.
Dr. Eric Sands, Superintendent of
Stamford is an experienced
strategic education administration
leader with more than two decades
of experience in six international
schools across four continents.
Stating about the success statistics
of the school, Eric asserts, “These
results are a testament to the ability
of our dedicated teaching staff in
motivating and engaging our
students to excel to the best they
can be. We are also attentive to
catering each student with their
own graduation pathway, suited to
their capabilities and interests. With
support from both parents and

22. At Stamford, all the students are required to engage into
age-appropriate, grade level community services alongside
optional co-curricular activities. This triggers students’
personal development and helps them understand and
embrace their aspirations through a variety of services.
These included activities from developing lesson plans and
materials for the Cambodia Hope School, helping to
provide rural and disadvantaged children better education
and brighter life, to activities developed to support UN’s
sustainable development goals, and many more.
Additionally, its Global Mentor Program helps the students
to interact with world’s most inspirational minds, industry
leaders, artists, and athletes.
The school is committed to the “Sport for All” philosophy.
To develop student athletes to reach their fullest potential,
its competitive and recreational Sports Program supports
various individual as well as team sports. This program
promotes Stamford’s core values of growth, integrity, and
caring by fostering the development of character, lifetime
wellness skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, morality, and a
sense of fairness and respect.
Some of its other exemplary parts of curriculum include
Social Program, which is based on the award-winning
Second Step methodology, to nurture the skills of learning,
empathy, emotion management, conflict management as
well as to proactively combat bullying. It also promotes
Visual Arts, which includes three programs- PYP (Primary
Year Program) to foster creativity and self-discovery in
students from KG1 to Grade 5; MYP (Middle Year
Program), for grade 6 to 10, to develop research,
inspiration, ideation, creative thinking, and responding
skills preparing them for visual art Diploma Program; and a
thought-provoking course for students in Grade 11 &12,
encouraging them to challenge their own creativity and
cultural expectations and boundaries. Technology and
Innovation is another part of Stamford’s curriculum. This is
to teach students the importance and how to exploit
technology and plant in them the roots of innovation. Its
state-of-the-art tools and programs, coupled with world’s
leading educators and an education technology coaching

23. Tailoring Special Educational Journey for Every
Student
Catering to the theory of ‘no-one-size-fits-all’ approach in
the journey of learning, every student at Stamford is guided
towards a successful academic outcome, which is
individually right for them. It is a non-selective school and
offers course options to suit different proficiency levels and
interests. This inclusive approach supports different student
educational backgrounds and ambitions.
Stamford not only offers over 40 IB courses and 19 AP
courses to select from, but also carries out pre-university
testing from Grade 10 with SAT and ACT test center onsite.
Its dedicated Academic & College counseling team works
closely with EducationUSA on campus to provide the best
advices for students and to prepare them for universities
anywhere in the world.
Every Stamford student graduates with a US High School
Diploma and at the same time has an opportunity to pursue
the IB Diploma, AP International Diploma, aligned to their
capabilities and interests.
Perfectly-Designed and State-of-the-Art Infrastructure
Stamford’s Elementary and Secondary Campus located at
Woodleigh Lane, combines the best teaching and learning
facilities – three swimming pools, two indoor sports arena,
one outdoor sports field, a 500-seat professional theater,
rock climbing walls, and classrooms designed to spark
imagination and learning.
The Woodleigh campus has an Innovation Center, built with
the aim of cultivating innovative mindset in the children
and bringing technology into play. It is a great space for
students from aged 6 to 18 years to explore their creative
minds. The center allows them to learn with new
technologies, collaborate with external partners and
organizations who are leading entrepreneurs and leaders in
their field. Being a purpose-designed area, it fully optimizes
the contemporary ‘market-space’ concept. Unlike a
standard classroom, the flexible space allows the students to
play with emerging technologies and techniques, such as
3D printers, robots, electronics, textiles, and fashion.
Just ten minutes away from the main campus, is its ‘Early
Learning Village’, which caters for children from 18
months to 6 years. Inspired by Reggio Emilia philosophy
where the environment nurtures the child, the Village has
purpose-built facilities with little learners in mind.

within easy access of many of
Singapore’s popular residential
areas, the Australian International
School has over 2700 students across
its Early Years, Elementary and
Secondary Schools. The Australian
International School’s ‘globally
focused, distinctly Australian’
approach provides students with an
international education that is
underpinned by Australian culture and
values. As the only
southern-hemisphere school to offer
both the IB and Australian curriculums
for students aged 2 months to 18 years,
the Australian International School is
widely regarded as a leading centre of
educational excellence in Singapore.
Culture that Develops Young Men
and Women of Character
The AIS curriculum and culture not
only values academic achievement, but
aims to develop students into adults
who have a moral commitment to
making the world a better place as
reflective, caring, knowledgeable and
principled people.
Students at AIS enjoy a wealth of
opportunities across academics, sport,
the arts and co-curricular activities.
There is a place for every child at AIS,
and as such the school remains
non-selective in its admissions policy,
confident that it is not intellectual
ability alone that determines an
individual’s worth or contribution to
the world.
Learning at AIS begins with a
Reggio-Emilia inspired program of
play based learning from 2 months old
in the Infant Care and Pre-nursery
classes. The IB Primary Years program
is introduced from 3 years old, igniting
curiosity and providing strong
foundations for future learning
throughout the Elementary School. The
Australian Curriculum forms the basis
of the teaching from Years 6 through to
8, when the IGCSE curriculum is then
introduced in year 9. After completing
the 2 year IGCSE program, students
are given the opportunity to choose
between two different graduating
pathways – the Australian HSC and the
IBDP, as well as the option of
vocational courses such as Hospitality
and Construction.
As an international school, diversity is
at the heart of the AIS culture. With a
AIS offers a holistic, rounded education, which cherishes the arts and sport as well as
academics as being essential to each student's learning journey.

29. tress is the body’s natural defense against danger and
Spredators. When people are in stress their bodies
produce larger quantities of the chemicals cortisol,
adrenaline, and noradrenaline. But increased level of stress
can lead into depression, lack of concentration, and
in-effectiveness at work. Thus, to combat stress and make
your distinct presence felt in this hypercompetitive world is
a vital necessity to stay relevant and dominant.
Thus, there are many widely popular techniques that are
effective to beat the stress which one can find useful in
dealing with nerve-racking situations.
This Art of Twist, Turn and Stretch can give Feeling of
Transcendence
Although any physical exercise is good to fight stress, but
yoga is among one of the best. Yoga is the platform which
unites individual consciousness with the universal
consciousness or spirit. This 10,000 years old practice has
very profound effect on human’s physical and mental
well-being and provides infinite possibilities on a human
mind and soul.
Almost everyone knows about the physical benefits derived
from yoga, but in reality its practice can also give
psychological benefits, such as reducing stress and
developing a sense of well-being. It also provides spiritual
benefits, such as a feeling of connectedness with god or
spirit, or a feeling of transcendence.
Many studies have proved that performing little yoga a day
can reduce stress and enhance productivity. Yoga also brings
and encourages a good mood, an increase in mindfulness, and
a healthy dose of self-compassion.
Balance the Consumption of Caffeine
Caffeine is the world’s most extensively consumed
psychoactive drug which acts as a stimulant which alerts
brain and also temporarily relieve drowsiness and fatigue. But
too much consumption of caffeine can lead to negative health
effects like insomnia, nervousness, an upset stomach,
restlessness, heartburn, jitters, irritability, a fast heartbeat, and
ultimately stress. According to Mayo Clinic, consumption of
more than 500-600 mg of caffeine can lead towards adverse
health effect.
Although caffeine rich food and beverages are scrumptious
which can lift your mood and give you a refreshing boost but
its consumption in excess quantities can elevate cortisol
levels.
Cortisol plays an important role in controlling blood sugar
levels, metabolism, reducing inflammation, and sharpening
memory formulation. Increase in cortisol level can result
further into muscle weakness, high blood pressure, mood
swings, anxiety etc. which ultimately cause deep stress.
Foods which contain caffeine include dark chocolate, sweet
chocolates, energy drinks, coffee liquors, American style

espresso and baked goods containing chocolate.
Too much consumption of sugary products, alcohol, and nicotine also invites stress.
Learn the Art of Saying ‘No’ Sometimes
By portraying oneself superior in front of manager, employees sometime say ‘Yes’ to some tasks which
they aren’t proficient at. Sometimes people accept promotion when they know they are not yet ready to
take upon the new challenges, marrying to someone about whom they feel unsecure about, having children
when not financially or emotionally ready and more. The list is endless but the symptoms are same, the
hesitation to say ‘No’.
“Sometimes, we need to say no so that we have more time to say yes”- Suzette Hinton, Author. There are
tasks in life which you cannot avoid but there are plenty in which you want to say ‘No’ but ultimately end
up by saying ‘Yes’ and thus invite lot of trouble and even stress as well sometime due to the
un-preparedness or in-competency for that task. Thus saying ‘No’ when you genuinely mean ‘No’ is a life
skill. For many people it comes naturally but for some it is like a mission impossible. At first glance,
saying ‘No’ to the other person may not feel right or pleasant but in the longer run it can foster better
emotional and mental health outcomes.
Thus saying ‘Yes’ all the time thus ultimately invites stress which could be avoided just by saying a polite
‘No’.
Beat the Stress with Effective Breathing Exercises
The main role of breathing exercise is to inhale oxygen and exhale CO2 through the movements of lungs.
Muscles that control the movement of the lungs are the diaphragm and the muscles between the ribs.
Breathing pattern of an anxious person is quite different from a non-anxious person. A stressed person
takes very small and shallow breaths using their shoulders instead of diaphragm to move air in and out of
their lungs. This form of in taking oxygen disrupts the balance of gases in the body. Thus to maintain the
balances it is vital to take deep breaths to feel relaxed and relieved.
Scientific studies have shown that controlling your breath can help to manage stress and stress-related
conditions like lowering blood pressure and heart rate, reducing levels of stress hormones in the blood,
and in balancing levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. Many effective breath control exercises
are used in some form of yoga, tai chi and meditation which gives huge boost to the mental well-being of a
stressed person.
Skull Shining Breath, Alternate Nostril Breathing, Abdominal Breathing Technique, and Equal Breathing
are some of the popular breathing techniques which are very effective to beat stress.
Apart from these vital aspects leisure activities; be it any like giving time to act on hobbies, watching
movie, playing music or doing anything creative etc. also does provide a great relief to cope up with stress.
Fun activities can lift up the mood and can translate into a decrease in stress levels as well.
So beat the stress whenever it comes and stay calm, positive and encouraged. As someone rightly said,
nothing is permanent, so don’t stress yourself too much because no matter how bad the situation is…it will
change.

hatsworth International School was founded in
1995 with the brilliant motif of enlightening young
minds with flames of education and wisdom. The
school had a humble beginning with only five students,
which has grown to more than 800 at two campuses. Both
campuses of the school offer an international curriculum
and attract students from diverse nationalities.
Notwithstanding this, Chatsworth International School has
built and maintained a small school ethos and takes pride in
providing a nurturing and trusting environment where
students are given the space to explore, learn and grow.
Today, the two international campuses are part of the
Chatsworth Group of Schools, which also includes two
local preschools registered with the Early Childhood
Development Agency in Singapore. Chatsworth Preschool
operates in two locations and runs the local curriculum for
children aged between 18 months and 6 years, preparing
them for primary education in Singapore mainstream
schools. Chatsworth International School is an International
Baccalaureate (IB) World School offering the IB Primary

33. Chatsworth International Campuses
Chatsworth International School has two campuses
providing International Baccalaureate (IB) education. They
are Orchard and Bukit Timah.
Orchard Campus
Chatsworth moved from Upper Serangoon to Orchard
campus in 1998, the original site of Singapore Chinese
Girls’ School, situated on a heritage street right off Orchard
Road in the heart of Singapore. What used to be Chatsworth
main campus for K-13 students for two decades is now a
primary only campus for K-6 (Grade 5) students from
August this year (2018).
Orchard campus has undergone renovation works that see
new innovative and quality play structures (not one but
three) being installed with EPDM flooring. The play
equipment is designed to foster imaginative and physical
play and each structure offer challenge for K-6 students.
There is also a new rubberized running track around the
perimeter of the basketball court for greater outdoor play.
A dedicated Discovery Centre and Maker Space that
provide facilities for the sciences, cooking, design, and
construction. Inventing, experimentation, problem solving
and creating are integral processes of the inquiry cycle and
the Primary Years Programme. Equipped with stoves,
ovens, workbenches, tools and a laboratory, the Discovery
Centre aims to stimulate and inspire the creativity and
experimentation of its students.
Bukit Timah Campus
Located amidst lush greenery and next to Singapore’s
breath-taking nature reserve, Chatsworth Bukit Timah is the
latest addition to Chatsworth Group of Schools. Bukit
Timah campus opened up its door in August this year
(2018) to its pioneering batch of students, staff, and parents.
It is the original site of German European School
Singapore. With a comfortable capacity of 850 students,
Chatsworth Bukit Timah caters to students from
Kindergarten to Year 13 (Grade 12). Its wide-ranging
facilities include a huge indoor sports hall, swimming pool,
basketball court, open amphitheatre, football pitch, drama
black box and more.
At Chatsworth, the facilities and programs are continually
improved for advanced learning and development of its
students.
The Pre-School Campuses- where elegance lies
Formerly known as Chatsworth Kindergarten, Chatsworth
Preschool offers local curriculum for ages 18 months to 6
years, preparing them for primary education in Singapore
mainstream schools.

Life at Chatsworth
The friendly and nurturing school environment of
Chatsworth provides a right at home feel. Chatsworth
values and respects each individual, no matter which part of
the world they hail from. Very often, it is heard that
‘everyone knows everyone at Chatsworth’ and this is in part
owing to the size of the school but not without the
camaraderie that has been fostered amongst the community.
New students will be assigned a buddy on their first school
day; a fellow student from homeroom who acts as a guide
and support to the new student over the first few days at
school. “We are here to help students assimilate into the
Chatsworth community as quickly as they can”, says
Sherwood.
Within Chatsworth, all students and staff are divided into 3
Houses: Changi, Sentosa and Raffles. Each student who
joins Chatsworth will be assigned to a House, with siblings
assigned to the same one. Houses are split vertically
throughout the school so each House will have Primary,
Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary students within it.
The house system is used to promote school spirit within all
areas of the school.

38. What is Gifted Education?
Gifted education is simply an
appropriate and challenging education
which meets the atypical educational,
social and emotional needs of our
gifted children. It is an education
which allows gifted students to learn
something new every day, to be
challenged and to move ahead at their
own pace. Gifted education programs,
along with specially trained gifted
education teachers, provide a
environment where gifted children can
engage in learning, develop
academically and thrive. An
appropriate gifted education program is
the only way to provide gifted children
the education they require—anything
less is failing our gifted children.
Gifted education is not elite education.
Star athletes are not benched until
everyone else catches up. Students do
not take turns being class president.
Friends are not redistributed from
popular kids to outcasts. In contrast,
gifted students often do not receive
academic stimulation until the rest of
the class catches up, are not called on
when they know the answer, and asked
to mentor students who are behind.
3 Reasons Gifted Education Is
Necessary:
1. Gifted children require a more
challenging education
The advanced cognitive abilities of a
gifted child help them grasp new
information quicker with fewer
repetitions than their same-age peers.
The material must be appropriately
aligned and paced to the child. When
much of the material is review or the
pace is too slow, the students do not
learn as much as they should or could.
They do not acquire necessary skills in
how to study, how to learn, and how to
work hard to achieve a goal. Not
having those skills will harm them in
their careers and lives. According to
The Marland Report on gifted children
in 1972, “because the majority of
gifted children’s school adjustment
problems occur between kindergarten
and fourth grade, about half of gifted
children became ‘mental dropouts’ at
around 10 years of age.”
If a gifted child is expected to sit and
listen to instruction on single-digit
addition when they have already
grasped 2digit multiplication (and this
scenario repeats itself over and over in
the regular classroom), frustration and
boredom set in and eventually gifted
children disengage from their
education, develop behavior problems
in class or drop out of school
completely.
2. Gifted education can provide
specially-trained teachers who
understand the unique needs of gifted
children
Many regular education teachers only
understand the stereotypical gifted
child who excels in school, is
well-behaved and is a natural leader.
We know this is not often the case. Too
often, boredom is misinterpreted as
ADHD, misbehavior is labeled as a
behavior disorder, and disengagement
from learning is viewed as lazy,
careless or disorganized. When
specially-trained gifted education
teachers who understand and can
provide the educational, social and
emotional environment gifted children
need, then gifted children have the
opportunity to fulfill their potential and
thrive in school.
3. Gifted children need to socialize
with like-minded peers
Gifted children have intellectual
interests that rarely coincide with their
peers and they may find themselves as
social outsiders among the majority of
typical students. Gifted children often
learn at a young age that they just don’t
fit in and finding a like-minded friend
is often very difficult. Gifted education
programs provide a social environment
where gifted children can socialize
with each other and be a part of a
group where they feel they belong and
fit in.
The very essence of education is to
educate our children so that they can
fulfill their potential. Knowing that
gifted children have specific academic,
social and emotional needs quite
different from their more typical
same-age peers, how can we not
provide these children an educational
environment which meets those needs?
In The Explore School House, students
are taught based on their ability levels
and not based on their chronological
ages. Each child will have his/her own
Personal Development Plan. Due to
such high customization, the teacher to
child ratio is kept at a low 1:10. The
curriculum materials used are specially
designed for the gifted and highly
talented to encourage critical thinking.
Our teachers are trained and have
experience working with gifted
students. We believe it takes a village
to nurture our students’ gifts and
interests. Thus, we partner with the
professionals in each area to work with
our students (for example, we have
professionals from Singapore
Symphony Orchestra to help our
students who are talented in music).
We believe in making education
relevant to the students, thus field trips
and honored guests visits are an
essential part of the student’s
experience here in The Explore School

Institution.
The Journey of Invictus
The journey of Invictus began in
November 2015 when two
experienced technology
entrepreneurs came together to create
a forward-looking, affordable
international school which would
serve the expatriate community. The
idea of founding Invictus came when
John Fearon discovered how high the
cost of international education was in
Singapore for his children. He and
his Co-founders put together a team
of experienced educators and built
the CPE registered school using the
International Primary Curriculum,
Singapore Mathematics, Jolly
Phonics and a Mandarin curriculum
of its own design.
In June 2017, Invictus moved from
Bukit Merah Central to the greener
campus at Dempsey Hill. Invictus’s
Loewen Road campus is set in an
historic black and white building
tucked in to the jungle of Dempsey
Hill. The school’s approach towards
the education is simple: high quality
teachers, with a 1:25 student to
teacher ratio, in a rich natural
environment.
Offering well-rounded education
with community based Resources
Invictus keeps tuition affordable by
utilizing resources in the area.
Through an agreement with the
neighboring swimming school,
Swish, Invictus students engage in
focused swimming lessons as part of
physical education without driving
up the cost of tuition.
To support children who are pulling

academics are taught by Invictus
International Teachers, and cover
topics such as Phonics, Maths,
Reading, Writing, Advanced

41. State-of-the-Art Curriculum Taught
by International Teachers
Invictus teaches the International
Primary Curriculum (IPC), which is a
thematic and creative way of teaching.
The IPC allows the teachers to plan
lessons that engage students in subjects
surrounding the unit of focus. Instead of
learning subjects such as History,
Geography, Science, and Social Studies
separately students engage with each
subject as it relates to an interesting
topic.
Invictus International is one of the few
international schools in Singapore that
teaches the Singapore Mathematics
Curriculum. Singapore Maths focuses on
fewer topics with the intent of learning
them thoroughly to mastery before
moving on. In this way, the
understanding is deep and can be applied
in new and different situations instead of
constantly being relearned at a basic level. The core purpose is to craft critical
thinkers and problem solvers.
The school offers a Mandarin program which is developed in-house with the
goal of obtaining useable language skills. Through the three (hour-long)
Mandarin lessons each week, students are challenged to develop the practical
skills to help them order in a restaurant, navigate a travel situation, and
immerse themselves in the Singapore culture. Mandarin courses are taught by
native speakers, who are experienced in teaching children at different levels
within the classroom.
For English Language, Invictus teaches phonics, grammar, and spelling using
Jolly Phonics. Jolly Phonics is the gold standard of synthetic (blended)
phonics and grammar since 1987. Jolly Phonics first teaches the letter sounds
and then builds up to blending these sounds together to achieve full
pronunciation of whole words.
Because Invictus offers a rigorous curriculum in a 1:25 student to teacher
environment, Invictus emphasizes the importance of the assessment
component of their admissions process. Students who apply for the school
must sit for an in-person assessment, designed to ensure that children will
thrive in the Invictus learning environment.

which the children assume more responsibility for their own learning within the
scope of their abilities. In an age-mixed class, the younger children meet their
“potential role models”, who help them out with solving their problems and
clearing ambiguities. Studies show that well implemented age-mixed learning
has no effect on academic performance, but has plenty of advantages in social
and personal competence.
The Swiss School in Singapore is definitely one of the firsts, if not only, school
in Singapore who has integrated this into its teaching methods.
Career opportunities and Exposures
As the curriculum is offered both in English and German language, the students
of Swiss school are at an advantage to get admitted into any school in
German-speaking countries. In addition, the school prepares its students for a
smooth transition to the United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA),
one of the school’s affiliates, where the students can obtain the International
Baccalaureate Diploma, allowing them to study at universities worldwide later
on in their career.
Accomplished Alumni
Swiss School maintains regular interaction with its alumni. Ursina
Kopp-Schweizer is one of its alumni. She was a Primary Student in the year
1982, and is now a Dental Hygienist with more than 14 years of experience.
Since 2013, she is back in the Swiss School in Singapore, but, this time as a
parent! Her daughter Anna and son Finn are in the Primary 4 and Primary 1
classes respectively.
INSIGHTFUL LEADER OF
SWISS SCHOOL
Markus Pallmann, the Principal
of Swiss School in Singapore hails
from Thurgau, Switzerland, and
brings with him more than twenty
years of experience as an educator.
He is very passionate about making

Tmotivated to learn, independent students
with self-learning skills. The desire to gain
new knowledge is the main engine on this road and
the power of that engine is a result of the aggregate
influence of the following factors.
Interesting Tasks
For various reasons, some children prefer physical
experiments from a young age, studying plants, or reading fictional
works. The task is motivating on its own merits and, in such
instances, our job is to do no harm and provide as many opportunities
as possible for the child’s self-realization in his favourite area.
Outstanding Results
Over time, most students of the School move far ahead in mastering
fundamental subjects when compared to their peers attending public
schools. The interaction of the children at the playground, at friends’
homes, at competitions, or in clubs or groups quickly makes
respected leaders of the School’s students. This inevitably leads to a
greater desire to achieve even better results and, when all is said and
done, shapes a personality that is successful and prepared to
overcome obstacles.

47. No Worse Than Others
We do not compare students with each other. What’s more,
we constantly emphasize the value of each child’s
individuality. However, after seeing the success of his
peers, even the laziest of children will strive to find his way
and be successful. We help them do just that.
Micro-successes
It is human nature to feel pleasure from achieving
micro-successes. When a student understands a concept or
he sees that he was finally able to master one topic or
another, his self-worth grows. To support this, we
encourage the child’s thirst for knowledge by dividing
difficult topics into easy micro-steps. Daily experiencing
these small successes forms a prolonged desire to discover
something new and to pave your path to the top.
Life Goals
One of the best motivators, especially for older children, are
dreams of the future. With the help of experienced School
teachers, children learn to mold their dreams within the
confines of the reality of life, while not losing the power of
this strong motivator. Sometimes cautionary tales like
“You’re going to end up a janitor” do the job. Though it’s
only worth using this as a last resort and only in
conjunction with a joint search of a positive life path.
A Fun Atmosphere
We love to be where we feel good and to do what gives us
positive emotions. For that reason, interactions between
student and teacher should be infused with jokes and fun
and absent of anger or threats as much as possible. For
example, to fight unavoidable student’s anxiety before
exams, the teacher can emphasize that we are much more
interested in the students’ day-to-day efforts than test
results. If you work diligently, results will inevitably follow.
Only rarely do we remind a student that he has the
opportunity to return to a public school, which doesn’t even
come close to fitting into his plans. However, if the
educational process feels like a fun, engaging game, then
the atmosphere itself makes using negative stimulation
unnecessary.
A Favorite Teacher’s Approval
Emotional contact with his teacher serves as major
motivation for a child to learn in school. If a kind, fun, and,
at the same time, hard-working atmosphere is created, then
the child will inescapably be drawn to his teacher and love
the subject. Under these circumstances, the teacher’s praise
and support in difficult moments may be the critical factor
among other motivational factors. It’s important to
celebrate not only the smallest results, but the child’s efforts
as well. A kind word, spoken at the right time, is
remembered for a long time and can change the child’s
attitude about school.
Rewards
When a student experiences significant success in school,
he regularly receives a valuable prize. Significant successes
could include mastering a grade’s content or completing
some portion of the learning plan in a given subject. The
prizes are chosen from a student’s wish list and are
discussed with him beforehand. A prize could be, for
example, a Lego set, a trip to a waterpark or a hike,
depending on the family income and the child’s wishes. The
frequency of receiving prizes should be tied to the speed of
the child’s learning and the difficulty of the material. It’s
recommended that rewards be given once every 1–2
months.
Personal Example
A child learns largely through imitation. If a student sees
the teacher studying on his own, that the teacher, just like
the student, experiences highs and lows, and endures
failures unfalteringly, it not only increases the teacher’s
authority in the eyes of the student, but the student also
gains a model for becoming a self-directed learner himself.
Examples of vitality and cheerfulness, of the ability to be
amazed by the unknown and the unexplored, these are
quickly absorbed by students and serve as powerful drivers
in the future self-realization on their life paths.
