Real-time marketing doesn’t afford the luxury of time, abundant resources, or an array of tools. Having a plan is key to owning the moment, whether you are covering an event or forced to quickly react. In this program delivered at Digital Summit Portland 2017, Lauren Teague, one of sports’ original social media reporters, teaches how real-time content is produced in real life. You will learn how to commit to your audience’s experience through purposeful channel selection and cohesive storytelling. Each participant will leave knowing how to plan, rehearse, and be ready for the moments when every minute counts. Learn more about Lauren and get the playbook template at teaguefc.com/realtime

Organizations must change in order to grow. And change includes bringing in new talent and skill sets. But, change is hard, and, it’s particularly hard to embrace when you’re still tasked with keeping the engines running on a daily basis. The CEO of a 30-year-old advertising agency knows this challenge all too well: how do you disrupt a business model without disrupting business, all while assembling a team poised to seize the disruption to drive growth? In this session, hear lessons learned for striking a balance between the past, present and future. Learn how to coach leaders to thrive on changing course. And, hear how to strengthen company culture in the midst of change, and even rely on employees to become hiring ambassadors.

"The very first question a customer asks us when we start work is - When will it be done? Traditional methods of answering this question are fraught with errors. The most common errors include heavy reliance on estimates and use of averages to give one deterministic answer. We are all aware that our world is not deterministic and each prediction has a probability of being right and a complimentary probability of being wrong. In this session, we will use examples and a simple exercise to demonstrate a much easier method which can help make probabilistic predictions. These predictions can help teams have more informed conversations with their customers about their probability of completing a project on time and around the risk profiles of their projects. The audience will learn how with very little estimation and simple measurements they can better inform and equip teams, managers and customers with information about possible completion dates of the project. We will show how these techniques are actively being used to predict the completion of single items and a set of multiple items in the real world. "

While there are plenty of reasons to ‘be there in person’, having a local team also comes with costs and limitations. Sometimes, the right skills are simply not available in the local community. In other cases, a trusted team member moves away, temporarily or permanently, or changes his or her work hours. It is often a lot easier to continue working with the person remotely, than to take on a significant risk of finding a replacement that will be in the team room, in person, during regular hours. With the right approach, it is possible to have a very successful team, that allows for flexibility over time and distance. In this talk, we will discuss the issues and solutions for managing a long-distance team, the difficulties of management over the long distance, the technologies and the gadgets that are designed to be helpful, but are not always.

Getting everyone on the same page is vital for the success of any agile effort. Systematic, visual representations – maps of the user experience -- help align team towards a common goal. You’re probably already familiar with mapping techniques already out there: journey maps, experience maps, user story mapping and more. But how do we apply these techniques in remote teams? The shared understanding that visualizations offer seems to get lost when interacting through Slack, Skype and the like. For sure, better tools can help remote collaboration, but ultimately distributed UX design requires a new set of skills.

Agile software development has formally been around since 2001. However, the spirit of Agile has been with us since we started doing stuff together. Working with each other, collaborating with customers and responding to change (see Agile Manifesto) are all core to Agile, but are also the mantra of a polite society. We will discuss how Agile principles can be used for GIS projects and requests. We will exhibit how Scrum can be used to manage project requirements and tasks. We will even cover how to estimate or size work to be done. The presentation will examine Agile/Scrum in progress. We’ll demonstrate how we manage effort and each other. What has improved since going Agile? What still needs work? And finally, why this works for GIS and government agencies.

Besides the giants like Facebook, Google and Twitter only a few smaller companies are able to work at scale. Skyscanner Budapest stepped on this exciting journey last year and set the goal: enable more and more engineers inside the company to work together on Skyscanner’s apps but at the same time keep our pace and fix release schedule that allows us iterative development. My presentation aims to be an insider-tour in Skyscanner’s engineering culture and more specifically in the daily routine of our Budapest-based mobile app development team: we are 40 engineers working to satisfy the needs of over 40 million travellers. It is also a story about how we slowly evolved from coders to product engineers whose most important job is to creatively solve complex problems. We haven't reached the end of our journey yet, however we think that our first learnings can be interesting for others.

What is agile? Where did it come from, and how can it help me? This session will go through a history of agile, including the origins of waterfall, the Toyota Production System and lean manufacturing, the creation of the agile manifesto, and how these all lead to the modern agile development frameworks we use today. By exploring the original design and intent behind agile principles and practices, we'll also uncover common pitfalls to agile adoption, and insights into overcoming them.

Transportation, travel, finance... Almost every industry has been disrupted, or will be soon. Central to this wave of change is a new way to work that combines agile, DevOps, Lean Startup mentality, and constant experimentation. This enables small teams to be both bold and extremely effective, while learning and improving at a much faster rate than ever before. Let me, Tanguy Crusson, take you through a day in the life of a successful product team. Your team can become one, too. Tanguy Crusson, Principal Product Manager, Atlassian

So you’re decided to make the transition to a Microservice Architecture. You’ve spent time doing the research. You’ve designed out the responsibilities of each service with your team. You’ve read and memorized the entire article Martin Fowler wrote on the subject. Now, you’re running a team that’s tasked with building some Microservices. You’re built or extracted your first services. You’ve been successfully transmitting data between these services. What next? What should you be aware of? What should keep you up at night? In this talk we’ll begin with a brief introduction to the architecture pattern before covering some of the more advanced topics when developing Microservices, focusing primarily on team management and service design philosophy. We’ll discuss the CAP theorem and why it should be your obsession. We’ll look at how Conway’s Law should be taken seriously and how it can serve as a warning to facilitate better communication between teams. Finally we’ll examine some common pitfalls of Microservices architectures and how they can be mitigated.
