Finally; Powerful, yet Practical Geotechnical
Applications at an affordable price!
GeoScience Software Intro
GeoScience Company Profile
As professional petroleum explorationists, we had long recognized the need for
powerful, yet easy to use geo-technical software. We didn't want tortuous menu
systems, large up-front costs, other major continuing costs, perpetual training, the
inevitable entourage of IT support staff, etc. Neither did we wish to become dedicated
specialists in the operation of a computer program, or servants to a computer
department.
GeoScience Software was founded in 1989 on the basic premise that an efficient
solution requires a good understanding of the problem. With a long and successful
track record in all facets of petroleum exploration and development, we understand
the problems. GS is the solution. Powerful technical tools that are readily accessible
to a wide range of technical expertise - isn't that what we've always wanted?
GS was developed by geo-technical professionals, NOT specialized computer
programmers who have no practical experience with the challenges facing general
geologists, geophysicists, and engineers in finding and developing hydrocarbon
reserves. This won't change at GeoScience Software. We are constantly improving
and enhancing GS to quickly deliver innovative, real-world solutions to our
customers. Their needs are no different now than ours were in 1989, and this
commitment to our customers will continue to drive our development efforts.
Technically, GS equals any PC product on the market. In terms
of price, performance, and especially user-friendliness, it is
superior. The basic manipulation of wireline and other well data
through a GIS format is a fundamental part of petroleum
geology, geophysics, and engineering. The high level of GS
user-friendliness makes these critical capabilities easily
accessible to a wide range of technical expertise, thus putting
powerful tools directly in the hands of the end user and
eliminating the common IT department bottlenecks. GS is
therefore ideal for a wide range of applications, from exploration
to development. Because of its portability, GS is ideal for
wellsite operations where fast, reliable solutions are required.
The GS package has been widely accepted since its introduction
26 years ago, with over 600 installations worldwide (references
available upon request). Our level of support is the best in the
business!
Software Overview
GS is a fully integrated PC-based Geotechnical
System whose primary features include:
 GIS-based System (ArcView)
 Interactive Well Correlations
 Comprehensive Petrophysical Analyses
 RFT Pressure Analysis
 Dipmeter Interpretation
 Full Integration of Mudlog data
 Seismic Synthetics
 Data Extraction and Quick Mapping
 Composite Log Design and Creation
 Cross Section Generation
Geographic Information
System (GIS) Capabilities
GS utilizes a central GIS theme based on ArcView/ESRI "Active
X" software controls. These create powerful GIS capabilities
within GS that link GS's extensive well database to "real world"
GIS formats where it can be integrated with virtually any other
spatial information. Many vector and raster formats are
supported; ArcView "Shape" files, CAD formats (DXF, DWG,
DGN), GeoTIFF, JPEG, ERDAS, and MrSID image compression.
There are options for layering all this spatial data to create
advanced maps, along with spatial and logical queries on map
layers. The opening GS menu looks similar to ArcView 3.x, so if
you are familiar with ArcView it'll be very easy - it'll be easy even
if you aren't! In addition, users can create their own shapefiles by
importing from simple text files.
Main GS Menu
Finally, your old paper maps can be integrated into the
digital GIS system by “Georeferencing” them in GS!

Pore Pressure
 Calculate Drilling Exponent.
 Overburden Gradient; create an overburden density log back to surface from density, sonic, and resistivity
logs. Also a number of model sources derived from empirical offshore data. “Bad hole logic" can be used to
correct OBG density errors. Manual editing can be used to create a density log through any gaps. The OBG can be
compared and/or derived from nearby wells to help constrain the interpretation and maintain local consistency.
 Pore Pressure; utilizes user-defined Shale Baselines and Normal Compaction Trends (NCT) to calculate Pore
Pressure from DXC, Sonic, Density, and Resistivity logs by the Eaton process. The Shale Baseline can be derived
from a number of sources, including those calculated in the petrophysics. A petrophysics V-shale log or any GR
log can be used to filter the shale zones above a user-defined cutoff, and then average these shale zones using a
smoothing function controlled by the user. Graphical editing of the shale baseline can also be done. The NCT
baselines can be derived from many methods and sources. The NCT can be edited graphically with animated
changes to the calculated pore pressure displayed instantaneously. Both the Shale and NCT baselines can be
derived from any nearby wells to help maintain local and regional consistency.
 Fracture Gradient; Poisson's Ratio (PR) can be derived from nine different sources, including calculated
from the GS petrophysics as a function of the various mineral percentages, which is very useful for deriving PR in
the absence of modern sonic data. Biot's Constant can also be derived from the petrophysics effective porosity.
Fracture gradients can be calculated using six methods; Eaton, Daines, Hubert & Willis, Mathews &
Kelly, Standard Model, and the Anderson model for shaley sand reservoirs. All of these are averaged into a 7th.
The Daines and Standard models utilize a "Tectonic Stress" (TS) variable. TS can be calculated from Leak-Off
results using lithology-specific PR's. The user can graphically create detailed TS variations throughout the well.
The calculated FG's can be compared to those in nearby wells to maintain local consistency.
 Pore Pressure prediction from Stacking Velocities.

A suite of Seismic functions which includes the following primary features:
 Time – Depth functions from Checkshots and Sonic Log Integration.
 Multi-well composite Time-Depth compilation in a map mode.
 Extract “pseudo” Sonic and Density Logs from a petrophysical analysis. These
logs can then be used in the Synthetics. This advantages are; better vertical
resolution, elimination of "bad-hole" effects, and reduction of the statistical
noise inherent in the density log. This innovative approach brings geology and
geophysics together in the borehole.
 Create Density Logs from Sonic using formation-specific Gardner Equation
Coefficients.
 Seismic Synthetics
o Ricker Zero Phase Wavelet
o Butterworth Minimum Phase Wavelet
o User Defined Wavelet
o Integration of the Sonic log with the Time-Depth function
o RMS and Instantaneous Gain Control (AGC)

 Complex Structural Dip removal to calculate true
sedimentary dips. Operates in a simple graphical mode.
 Multi-well dip statistics operates in a Map mode to extract
average dips and azimuths for any group of wells at any
horizon. Excellent for regional and field studies.

Powerful Geotechnical Software at an Affordable Price

  • 1. Finally; Powerful, yet Practical Geotechnical Applications at an affordable price! GeoScience Software Intro
  • 2. GeoScience Company Profile As professional petroleum explorationists, we had long recognized the need for powerful, yet easy to use geo-technical software. We didn't want tortuous menu systems, large up-front costs, other major continuing costs, perpetual training, the inevitable entourage of IT support staff, etc. Neither did we wish to become dedicated specialists in the operation of a computer program, or servants to a computer department. GeoScience Software was founded in 1989 on the basic premise that an efficient solution requires a good understanding of the problem. With a long and successful track record in all facets of petroleum exploration and development, we understand the problems. GS is the solution. Powerful technical tools that are readily accessible to a wide range of technical expertise - isn't that what we've always wanted? GS was developed by geo-technical professionals, NOT specialized computer programmers who have no practical experience with the challenges facing general geologists, geophysicists, and engineers in finding and developing hydrocarbon reserves. This won't change at GeoScience Software. We are constantly improving and enhancing GS to quickly deliver innovative, real-world solutions to our customers. Their needs are no different now than ours were in 1989, and this commitment to our customers will continue to drive our development efforts.
  • 3. Technically, GS equals any PC product on the market. In terms of price, performance, and especially user-friendliness, it is superior. The basic manipulation of wireline and other well data through a GIS format is a fundamental part of petroleum geology, geophysics, and engineering. The high level of GS user-friendliness makes these critical capabilities easily accessible to a wide range of technical expertise, thus putting powerful tools directly in the hands of the end user and eliminating the common IT department bottlenecks. GS is therefore ideal for a wide range of applications, from exploration to development. Because of its portability, GS is ideal for wellsite operations where fast, reliable solutions are required. The GS package has been widely accepted since its introduction 26 years ago, with over 600 installations worldwide (references available upon request). Our level of support is the best in the business! Software Overview
  • 4. GS is a fully integrated PC-based Geotechnical System whose primary features include:  GIS-based System (ArcView)  Interactive Well Correlations  Comprehensive Petrophysical Analyses  RFT Pressure Analysis  Dipmeter Interpretation  Full Integration of Mudlog data  Seismic Synthetics  Data Extraction and Quick Mapping  Composite Log Design and Creation  Cross Section Generation
  • 5. Geographic Information System (GIS) Capabilities GS utilizes a central GIS theme based on ArcView/ESRI "Active X" software controls. These create powerful GIS capabilities within GS that link GS's extensive well database to "real world" GIS formats where it can be integrated with virtually any other spatial information. Many vector and raster formats are supported; ArcView "Shape" files, CAD formats (DXF, DWG, DGN), GeoTIFF, JPEG, ERDAS, and MrSID image compression. There are options for layering all this spatial data to create advanced maps, along with spatial and logical queries on map layers. The opening GS menu looks similar to ArcView 3.x, so if you are familiar with ArcView it'll be very easy - it'll be easy even if you aren't! In addition, users can create their own shapefiles by importing from simple text files.
  • 7. Finally, your old paper maps can be integrated into the digital GIS system by “Georeferencing” them in GS!

  • 10. Horner Plot Example During Data Entry
  • 15. Correlations A variety of correlation tools:  Graphical, interactive well correlations utilizing any log combinations and lithologies.  Build detailed Horizons database; Age, Era, Epoch, Biostrat, Palynology, User-Defined, etc.  Tabular Horizon Entry  Horizon ASCII Import/Export  Create large cross sections to Plotters or output to BMP, TIF, JPEG, PDF, and many other file formats. Utilize any log combinations in the section, shade logs with Lithology, and many other options. Vertical scale in Measured Depth, True Vertical Depth, or Seismic Two-Way Time.
  • 17. Complete Petrophysical analysis which includes the following primary features: • Comprehensive 2D and 3D log and lithology crossplotting (single and multi-well modes). • Multi-Well RFT Pressure Analysis • Complete environmental and RT (Tornado Chart) corrections. • Ten porosity algorithms, including an intelligent "computer's choice" mode. • V-shale calculations from GR, SP, Potassium, Thorium, Resistivity, and Neutron-Density logs. • Rwa, RwSP, and RW Ratio calculations including interactive Hingle and Pickett plots. • Interactive graphical “F” Overlay Rw determination. • Deterministic simultaneous model (11 algorithms) for complex lithology solutions. • Graphical entry of a “User Interpreted Lithology” to add a statistical bias to the Lithology calculations. • Eight Water Saturation models to choose from. • “Bad Hole” logic and log repair. • Permeability calculations from three models. • Statistical analysis of results (Net Pay, Averages, Net Lithology, Lith ratios, etc.) • Text file output to produce tabular results for export to spreadsheets and word processors. • Interactive capabilities coming soon (Feb. 2017 planned)! Petrophysics
  • 22. Create Clean Water Zones for RW Analysis
  • 29. Advanced "Bad Hole" Logic and log corrections
  • 32. Interactive Mode for SW Variables
  • 34. Oil and Gas In-Place Statistics
  • 36. Pore Pressure  Calculate Drilling Exponent.  Overburden Gradient; create an overburden density log back to surface from density, sonic, and resistivity logs. Also a number of model sources derived from empirical offshore data. “Bad hole logic" can be used to correct OBG density errors. Manual editing can be used to create a density log through any gaps. The OBG can be compared and/or derived from nearby wells to help constrain the interpretation and maintain local consistency.  Pore Pressure; utilizes user-defined Shale Baselines and Normal Compaction Trends (NCT) to calculate Pore Pressure from DXC, Sonic, Density, and Resistivity logs by the Eaton process. The Shale Baseline can be derived from a number of sources, including those calculated in the petrophysics. A petrophysics V-shale log or any GR log can be used to filter the shale zones above a user-defined cutoff, and then average these shale zones using a smoothing function controlled by the user. Graphical editing of the shale baseline can also be done. The NCT baselines can be derived from many methods and sources. The NCT can be edited graphically with animated changes to the calculated pore pressure displayed instantaneously. Both the Shale and NCT baselines can be derived from any nearby wells to help maintain local and regional consistency.  Fracture Gradient; Poisson's Ratio (PR) can be derived from nine different sources, including calculated from the GS petrophysics as a function of the various mineral percentages, which is very useful for deriving PR in the absence of modern sonic data. Biot's Constant can also be derived from the petrophysics effective porosity. Fracture gradients can be calculated using six methods; Eaton, Daines, Hubert & Willis, Mathews & Kelly, Standard Model, and the Anderson model for shaley sand reservoirs. All of these are averaged into a 7th. The Daines and Standard models utilize a "Tectonic Stress" (TS) variable. TS can be calculated from Leak-Off results using lithology-specific PR's. The user can graphically create detailed TS variations throughout the well. The calculated FG's can be compared to those in nearby wells to maintain local consistency.  Pore Pressure prediction from Stacking Velocities.
  • 42. A suite of Seismic functions which includes the following primary features:  Time – Depth functions from Checkshots and Sonic Log Integration.  Multi-well composite Time-Depth compilation in a map mode.  Extract “pseudo” Sonic and Density Logs from a petrophysical analysis. These logs can then be used in the Synthetics. This advantages are; better vertical resolution, elimination of "bad-hole" effects, and reduction of the statistical noise inherent in the density log. This innovative approach brings geology and geophysics together in the borehole.  Create Density Logs from Sonic using formation-specific Gardner Equation Coefficients.  Seismic Synthetics o Ricker Zero Phase Wavelet o Butterworth Minimum Phase Wavelet o User Defined Wavelet o Integration of the Sonic log with the Time-Depth function o RMS and Instantaneous Gain Control (AGC) Seismic Synthetics
  • 45. Dipmeter Interpretations Powerful tools to extract valuable information from Dipmeter Data:  Import Dipmeter Data from ASCII Files, including Dip Quality.  Complex Structural Dip removal to calculate true sedimentary dips. Operates in a simple graphical mode.  Multi-well dip statistics operates in a Map mode to extract average dips and azimuths for any group of wells at any horizon. Excellent for regional and field studies.
  • 48. Extract and Map Data The Data Extractor and Quick Mapper allow rapid spatial evaluation of large databases – test your concepts quickly:  Data Extractor that quickly compiles a wide range of statistics for all database wells to produce an XYZ Point file for the Mapper:  Horizons (Structure Maps in Time or Depth)  Horizon Intervals (Isopach and Isochron maps)  Average Log values over any interval  Log Cutoff counts over any interval  Lithology percentages and ratios over any interval (Lithofacies Maps)  Average Dips over any interval (Depositional Energy Maps)  Geothermal Gradients to any horizon (Kitchen Maps)  Trend and Residual Surface Analysis  Quick Mapping; Contour, Color Fill, Color Flood, and a variety of 3-D renderings  Point editing functions.  Import and Export of XYZ data in ASCII Format  Export Map graphics to georeferenced raster files (BMP)
