2. tener  to have
• The verb tener is irregular.
• The only irregular verb that we know
already is SER (to be).
– Forms of ser?
Soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son
– Irregular “yo” verbs  ir, ser, estar, dar, ver

3. tener  to have
tengo tenemos

4. Tener anos  AGE!
• We use the verb TENER to express age in
Spanish.
• tener + # + años (years)
• (Yo) tengo diez años.  I am 10 years old.
• (Ellas) tienen veinte años.  They
(females) are 20 years old.
• Ustedes tienen quince años.  You all are
15 years old.

5. • We can also use tener to talk about
possession.
– (Yo) tengo tres hermanos.
– ¿Tienes un gato o un perro?
– ¿Cuántos hermanos tienes?
– ¿Tienes una familia grande o pequeña?

6. tener que
• We can use tener to talk about having to
do something (chores, homework, etc).
• For this, we use tener que.
– (Ella) tiene que tomar apuntes en la clase.
• She has to take notes in class.
– (Yo) tengo que comprar un regalo.
• I have to buy a gift.

7. ADJETIVOS POSESIVOS
• You use possessive adjectives to show
possession or ownership.
• Like other adjectives, the possessive
adjective must agree with the noun it
modifies.
• In English, our possessive adjectives are
my, yours, his, hers, its…. Etc….
– My book; your keys; his car; her story….

8. mi, tu & su
• Mi, tu, and su only have two forms:
singular & plural.
• Mi = my / tu = your / su = his/her/its
– Mi libro y mi calculadora / Mis libros y mis calculadoras
– Tu libro y tu calculadora / Tus libros y tus calculadoras
– Su libro y su calculadora / Sus libros y sus calculadoras
– My book and my calculator
– Your book and your calculator
– His/her/its book and calculator

9. SU
• Su can always be replaced by a
prepositional phrase. This is what we
have done thus far in Spanish

– El libro de Ud.
– El libro de ella
– El libro de la profesora
– El libro de Uds.
– El libro del muchacho
– El libro de ellos
– ETC……….

10. Nuestro/a(s) = OUR
• The possessive adjective nuestro (our) has
four forms.
– Nuestro primo
– Nuestra abuela
– Nuestros primos
– Nuestras abuelas

11. Vuestro/a(s) = YOUR
• The possessive adjective vuestro (your) has
four forms. (Spain only)
– vuestro primo
– vuestra abuela
– vuestros primos
– vuestras abuelas
