Question 5

  Why do you become
  involved in these
  projects? Are there
  benefits to your
  students?
Benefits to learners
There are countless benefits
 The students work beyond their classroom walls.
 They have an authentic audience which encourages best
practice as students want their work to look good, be
  spelt correctly etc.
 They learn digital citizenship, cyber safety and many
important 21st century skills as they use the internet.
 A collaborative project leads to many valuable teachable
moments and allows student directed learning.
 Tolerance, respect for and information about different
  cultures
Question 6

  Where do you
  find projects to
  get involved
   in?
Ways of finding projects

 Blogging

 Finding virtual friends and setting up projects with
    them.

 Looking at project sites that connect classes

 Developing a Personal Learning Network (PLN) and
setting up projects with some of them.

Question 7

     Also can you describe any
   projects that you haven’t been
   involved with but are good
   examples of collaboration done
   well? Maybe they have used
   applications that you
    haven’t yet tried?
Applications I still want to try
 Google sites
 Google docs
 Windows moviemaker and School Tube
 Glogsters
Projects to look at
 A collaborative writing project with Tracy Muller’s class in
    Ontario, Canada, http://writingpals.wikispaces.com/
They used Google Docs for the writing and the partners
    compared notes via Skype.
 Global Newspaper Written by Kids
    http://globalnewspaper.wikispaces.com/
Starting this year, school children across the globe are creating a
global newspaper. Currently there are six countries participating:
USA, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Lebanon, and England. If you
would like to see you classroom contributing to this paper, email
    Garret Ferguson at lafayette4@gmail.com
 Recording projects on a SchoolTube channel
    http://tinyurl.com/y8hqodn
Bob Greenwood from the USA keeps a record of all their videos
of all their projects on a School Tube channel
 O.R.E.O. Project http://www.jenuinetech.com/
Jen Wagner’s JenuineTech.com presents the tenth year of using the
Oreo® cookie to teach Math, History, Language Arts, Science,
Technology, and more in your classroom!
This project is open to
classrooms of any grade in any location! This year students will stack
the original Oreo® cookie and counted how many Oreos® they can
    stack before the Oreos® tumble!
 Holiday Card Exchange
    http://www.jenuinetech.com/Projects/hce09/hce09information.htm Jen
Wagner organizes the Holiday Card Exchange project. It had 787
    classrooms from 46 US States,
7 Canadian Provinces, Australia, Japan,
New Zealand, Philippines, Scotland, Russia, & the United Kingdom.
Classrooms are teamed with 24 other classrooms to exchange holiday
    cards.
 Myst III Exile http://www.timrylands.com/
Tim Rylands strategically uses Myst games to support literacy and
communication skills and to facilitate whole-class discussion. He
regularly focuses his lessons around Myst Exile, due to the
compounding realism of the game as well as the fantastical elements
that help to inspire his pupils and improve their metaphorical skills.”
 The Monster Project http://www.smithclass.org/proj/Monsters/index.htm
Each class chooses a Monster part. Then, each class writes a description of
that part and sends it to this project web. When all of the descriptions are
in, each class builds a single MONSTER using everyone's descriptions from
the table below. Elissa Gerzog began this as an e-mail project in the 1990's
called Monsters Monsters Monsters©. Terry Smith of Hannibal, MO began
running it as web-based in 2000.
 The Landmark Games
    http://kidspace.kidlink.org/start.php?HoldNode=25955
Classes choose a Landmark any where in the world. Students research
facts concerning the landmark and compose nine interesting clues. Three
clues per week are posted by the landmark moderator to the Kidproj
listserv over a three-week period. All registered teams can ask one yes or
no question per week of each team in the game. At the end of the three
weeks the team that guessed the most landmarks is declared the winner!
Past Participants are from: Russia, Sweden, USA, Germany, Taiwan, China,
Pakistan, South Africa, France, Brazil, Canada, Australia, and the Czech
    Republic.
 A Room with A View
    http://aroomwithaview.pbwiki.com/INTRODUCTION
Each class captures a monthly picture of the view from a classroom
window throughout the year and watch how the scenery changes.
They write descriptions of what they see change and to also share
with other classrooms about what they have observed. The
description includes the date, time of day, weather, and temperature.
 Voices of the World
    http://votw.wikispaces.com/
Voices Of The World was created in June 2007 by Mrs. Tonner a
former ICT Specialist at The High School Of Dundee in Scotland,
United Kingdom and now a Lecturer in Primary Education at The
University Of Dundee. The project started as an eTwinning project to
connect children in Europe using their voice and their own language.
Since the project started in 2007, children from around the world
have 'Let Their Voice Be Heard'.
Google sites

Question 8

   How do you
   learn how to use
   the Web 2.0
   tools?
Useful tutorial video sites
Watch a video on any topic you’re interested in. Try You Tube for a start.
(There’s also School Tube and Teacher Tube). Many teachers have channels with all
their videos on them such as http://www.youtube.com/user/LearnitN5 . Another
interesting group is the Common Craft videos.
Useful instructional blog sites
There are a number of blogs that supply
teachers with excellent Web2 resources.

Question 9

    Is there anything
    you would still
    like to do in the
    way of projects?
Projects based in Africa

I’d like to get more into projects based in
Africa as well as my other global projects.
Question 9

  What tips or
advice would you
give others to
ensure that
projects run
smoothly?
Suggestions
 Start with small, short projects. Join a project first
  before creating your own.
 Commitment and dedication are essential
 Get to know the other educators prior to and
throughout the project, to gain confidence in each
  other
 Do not be frightened to ask for help or ask questions
  of any nature.
 Be prepared to work hard (as hard as you may have
ever worked in your life) and take risks
 Work your blogs/wikis to the fullest giving step by step
instructions to classes where possible for each lesson
to clarify the tasks that need to be done in your own
mind and also for student reference.
 Give out check list sheets to ensure that students
  remain on track
