Teaching ethics

  • 2.  Deals with laws of morality and rules of conduct.  Determines the rightness or wrongness of actions. “Ethics is the science of judging specifically human ends and the relationship of means to those ends. In some way it is also the art of controlling means so that they will serve specifically human ends” - Garret
  • 3.  Deals with determining rules or behaviour of business enterprises.  “It is the study of what is ethically permissible and what is positively virtuous, in regard to business activity.”  Application of ethical principles to business relationships and activities.
  • 4.  Determines issues that business houses face in operating their activities.  Draws distinction between what is right or wrong, fair or unfair, just or unjust.  Demands business houses to engage in socially responsible behaviours.
  • 5.  Demands to be good corporate citizens, and not only to be profit making units.  Demands to obey the law. Legal obedience ensures long run survival and prosperity of business houses.  Broader than law.
  • 6.  Legal Concern.  Government Regulations.  Industry and Company ethical codes.  Social Pressures.  Tension between personal standards and needs of the organization.
  • 7.  Affects lives considerably.  Business houses are the creation of society and therefore must work for the benefit of the society.  Common standards of ethics, which is possible only if they have uniform code of ethics.  Threat of consumer boycotts .  Avoid Government regulations and interference.
  • 8.  Any field of study, whether scientist, scholars or professionals define integrity in teaching ethics as fundamental to their work.  Ethical conduct should be addressed in a more systematic and rigorous manner.  A New Direction for Teaching and Learning.
  • 9.  Honesty.  Promise-Keeping.  Respect for Person.  Fairness.
  • 10.  Content competence  Pedagogical competence  Dealing with sensitive topics  Student development  Dual relationships with students
  • 11.  Confidentiality  Respect for colleagues  Valid assessment of student  Respect for institution
  • 12.  Principles based model. Focuses on theoretical aspects of teaching business ethics.  Virtual based model. Focuses on practical aspects of business ethics.
  • 13.  A company’s executives should know what kind of business the company intends to do.  Involves teaching integrity, truth, honesty, righteousness, social responsibility etc…so that interest of society at large is protected.
  • 14.  Creates awareness.  Helps in decision making.  Transformation of consciousness and commitment.  Overcome the unethical practices.
  • 15.  Theoretical wisdom is sufficient.  Do not advocate a particular point of view.  Moved away from the necessary topic.  Very few professional rewards.  Does not match the professional profile.  Cannot be taught or learnt, its inborn.
  • 16.  Cannot be developed on their own, have to be taught.  Values of ethics are personal, but some base line must be observed.  Teaching values of ethics from childhood.  Obligations of business houses to the society is met.  Ethics are inborn.  Learns more through experience and interactions.
