1. Tom Crook created his first sprite called "player1_spr" and adjusted its properties like origin and collision mask.
2. He then created an object for the sprite called "Killer Turkey_Object" and set its first event as the step event. He coded keyboard controls to move the sprite.
3. Features added included setting movement limits, adding a scrolling background, particle effects, player projectiles, animated enemy sprites, enemy spawning and movement, enemies being destroyed by lasers, enemy projectiles, health systems, scoring, and a second stationary enemy.
