This document introduces the concepts of task, audience, and purpose in writing. It does so through a three act structure: Act I defines task as the type of writing required, such as an essay, report, or poem. Act II explains that audience refers to the people who will read the writing, and that the audience impacts choices of language, tone, and information. Act III states that purpose is the reason for writing, such as to persuade, inform, entertain, or express ideas; knowing the purpose guides the content.
