• They are mainly dominated by male artists.
• Indie Rock/Pop is not traditionally seen as mainstream music however in reason
years it is seen as becoming more mainstream as bands such as the Arctic
Monkeys have come into the charts.
• Indie music normally involves some sort of guitar playing
which is why people can find Indie music hard to categorise
into Indie Rock or Indie Pop.
• There are also other Indie sub-genres such as Indie Alternative but a lot of bands
which are classed as Indie Alternative can also be classed as Indie Rock.

5. Justification of Artist Choice
Twenty One Pilots
Twenty one pilots’ genre of music is
indie pop which relates to the genre I
have chosen for my magazine. As well
as that they are well known and have
success in the indie/pop industry.
Arctic Monkeys
Arctic Monkeys’ are one of the most
well known Indie Rock bands in the
world so to choose them to be on my
front cover would appeal to the reader
as they are so well known.
Swim Deep
The fact that Swim Deep are a local
band could make readers locally relate
to them more. Also Swim Deep are a
relatively new band (2011) so it would
be another way of promoting the
band.
American Authors
Peace
Peace are a local Indie Rock band
which again could make the readers
locally relate to them more. It would
again be a way of promoting them to
the audience who are only interested in
more mainstream bands. Jaws
The American Authors’ are not as well
known in the UK as the two above but
it would be a good idea to have them
on the front cover as it could be a way
of advertising the band and making
them more popular amongst fans.
Jaws again are another local Indie Pop
band and were only recently formed
together (2012). They would appeal to
the more local audience as they can be
easily related to. Being on the cover
could help them achieve more success.

6. Indie Rock/Pop in the Charts
These are the two highest Indie Rock/Pop artists I could
find in BBC Radio 1’s UK top 40 chart. It was difficult to find
many Indie Pop/ROCK artists as BBC Radio shows very
mainstream music and you would not class Indie music as
mainstream. These are the only Indie Pop/Rock artists
which I could find in the top 40 which suggests that Indie
music in general is not that popular within the UK.
These are 3 Indie Pop/Rock
artists in which I found on the
ITunes top 100 downloads
chart. It is difficult to find Indie
Pop/Rock artists on the charts
as Indie is not the most popular
genre of music throughout the
UK with genres such as Dance,
R&B and Pop having a far bigger
following than Indie music. This
is another reason as to why I
found Indie artists so far down
on the chart list.

are usually seen in magazines.
Q&A Free Flowing

11. Q&A Structure
• Q&A is what it says- a basic question and answer
format.
• It is a very simple and effective way of getting straight
to the point of what you are trying to find out.
• It would be easier to write as there is a basic format to
follow.
• I like the fact that you get to find out exactly what you
want by asking a specific question based on certain
information that the readers might want to find out.

12. Free Flowing Structure
• A free flowing structure is again what it says- it is an article
which flows through without actual questions being shown
on the text and only a mixture of quotes from the
interviewee.
• It is an effective way of giving the writers extra thoughts or
opinions on the person being interviewed as they get space
in between the quotes.
• The writer a lot of the time would also give you extra
information about the interview for example if the
interviewee was laughing or what sort of mood they seem
in.
• It would be more complicated to write up as you have to
write more and it has to include extra information from you
as the writer.
