Indie rock originated in the UK and US in the 1980s and is a diverse genre encompassing styles like indie pop and lo-fi. In the mid-1980s, "Indie" described music produced on punk labels rather than the labels themselves. Bands like The Smiths helped popularize guitar-based music as an alternative to synth pop. In the 1990s, grunge bands like Nirvana brought alternative rock into the mainstream. Digital technology in the 2000s made it easier for indie bands to get recognized without major labels.

2. Indie Rock is a genre of music that originated in the UK and USA in the 1980’s.
It is extremely diverse with many sub-genres within it such as indie pop, jangle
pop and lo-fi among others.
In the mid 80’s ‘Indie’ became a term to describe music produced on punk
labels rather than the labels themselves. Bands like The Smiths began to get
big and be heard on all radio stations as they rejected the dominant synth
pop of the early 80’s and helped inspire guitar and bass based music.
In the US ‘Indie’ became known with bands like the Pixies and Meat Puppets.
The 1990’s began to make major changes to the indie/alternative rock
scene. Bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam became more popular and
were placed in the ‘Alternative’ bracket. In the UK bands such as Blur and
Oasis became more mainstream, which took them away from the Indie
scene, however their music still remains as indie rock as there is no others like
them.
From the 2000’s to present digital technology as improved allowing people to
access music without CD’s, this has made it easier for Indie bands to get
recognized and stay as Indie bands for as long as possible. Once they are
signed many bands were considered sell outs as their music would generally
change afterwards and not retain the Indie sound that is very much guitar
based.

3. I created a handwritten mind map of genres for my magazine. I have decided to go with Indie Rock as that is the
genre I have the biggest interest in and could create a magazine that is effective for this genre. The target audience
will be people of my own age that enjoy similar music which makes this easier to create a music magazine which
people similar to me would enjoy and purchase.

4. Here I have created another hand written mind map. I experimented with abbreviations, inspiration from
artists, inspired from images found on the internet and names/words that are very UK based as my magazine will be a
British music magazine. I also drew the logos from other popular music magazines for inspiration. I have decided to call
my magazine ‘Zepher’ which is a lyric from a song by ‘The Red Hot Chilli Peppers’. I chose this as it is unusual and will
be recognized by Chilli Pepper fans, who are part of my target audience. I want the name to stand out so that when
a person says the word ‘Zepher’ they know immediately what magazine it is and what content is involved.

5. The fonts I have looked at all have that they are unusual in
common. The first and 3rd featured below are rough and un
organized which I wanted. The 2nd is the exception as it is
very neat, this is part of the reason I didn’t pick it for my final
piece.
This is the font I have chosen for my
magazine. It isn't neat and structured which
is exactly how I want my magazine to be.
I liked the arrows featured with this as they
add an unusual touch to it which the others
did not offer.
