1. Task6:The story of the 80s and the origin of Gothic rock.
Overview of the 80s: The 80s was an explosion of bright, vivid
and bold choices whether it was in clothing choice or in
musical choice. A growth in technology meant a growth in
possibilities; things such as computers and video games grew
in popularity with the rise of Nintendo and games like Pac
man. Things that were never before accessible became just
that= Music on the go with Walkman's and boom boxes and
movies at home with the vhs. All this meant the youth of the
80s had more choice and freedom than their parents before
them meaning a boom in creativity.
2. Pop culture.
• The launch of MTV meant in some respect the launch of the
music industry again and the importance of music videos,
stars spending millions of pounds on music videos which is
something that was never done before.
• Popular artists of the 80s include: Madonna, Duran Duran and
Michael Jackson.
• The availability of keyboard and synthesizer meant a growth
in their popularity meant a growth of their popularity in the
music industry and the use of them at home.
3. New Romantics.
• The new romantic were a movement that
originated in a nightclub called ‘the Blitz’ in
London, the movement is known for their
eccentricity and makeup worn by both males
and females.
• The music style is heavily synthesiser based
music often called synth pop.
• David Bowies character of Ziggy Stardust is
often cited as one of the biggest inspiration
for the movement as it encouraged men to
also wear makeup and for both men and
women to adopt more of an androgynous
look.
4. Punks
• The punk fashion and music began in 1978 with the
formation of the sex pistols, the clothing choice was a
reaction to the current on goings such as the wearing
of bin bags and safety pins.
• It was also a rebellion of conformity and societies rules
on censorship etc.
• Punk encourages individualism and dressing how you
wished to dress not what was in fashion.
• Punk clothes could be brought at Vivienne Westwood's
shop or made at home.
5. Heavy metal style.
• The heavy metal style
grew with the growth
of heavy metal music,
bands such as motley
crue and guns and
roses meant in a rise
in popularity for both
the style and music.

• The style can be
identifies by leather
jackets (worn by guns
and roses), long hair,
mullets and band t-
shirts.
6. Skin heads and new wavers.
• Skin heads are characterised as suggested by the titles
shaved heads, they wore Dr marten boots, shirts and a
tartan inside jacket, often having tattoos of crosses.

• New wavers or post punk style was the evolution of the
punk style. The music style was electro and experimental
with bands such as ‘the Talking heads.’
7. Chosen genre: Goth rock.
• Gothic rock is a subgenre of alternative rock and post punk
which originated in the late 1970s.
• bands such as Bauhaus, the cure and siouxsie Sioux.

• The music can be identifies with dark lyrics, often ironic and
satirical. The instrumental often features a guitar, bass,
keyboards and synthesizers.

• Free flowing: I read an article called ‘Tell me about Dylan’ which was free
flowing and I like the freedom, it didn’t feel like it was cut off or rushed.
• Whereas in Q and A format it seems more choppy and rushed.
