- 3. MY (SUB)GENRE -MOD Mod is a british youth subculture of the early to mid-1960s and was briefly revived in later decades. It grew from a small group of London-based stylish young men in the late 1950s who were termed modernists because they listened to modern jazz. Fashion was a huge element in the subculture. You had to have the ‘look’. It has been stated that mods were a small group of clothes-focused working class young men that insisted on clothes and shoes tailored to their style. As well as having a scooter usually Vespas or Lambretta. They clashed with the rockers, another youth subculture, that wore leather and rode motorbikes. Basically they did everything opposite to mod. This caused there to be a rivalry which often ended up in fights. Why I choose mod? After my research into magazines, I discovered that there wasn’t a specific print mod magazine. Although there was popular website platforms, there was a specific print verison.
- 4. HISTORY OF MOD In the 1960’s – Mod were apart of Northern soul. They listened to American soul records and tried to get their hands on any American clothes. 1964- Famous riots between the rivals mod and rockers which made front pages of newspapers. 1965- Small faces band formed The original mods gathered at all-night clubs such as The Roaring Twenties, The Scene, La Discothèque, The Flamingo and The Marquee in London to hear the latest records and to show off their clothes and dance moves. Normally thanks to the use of amphetamine. Around 1966 - As psychedelic rock and the hippie subculture grew more popular in the United Kingdom, many people drifted away from the mod scene. -Hard Mods away from the mod look and emulated the rude boy look of Trilby hats and too-short trousers. They eventually evolved into skinheads. The early skinheads retained basic elements of mod fashion, such as Fred Perry and Ben Sherman shirts but mixed them with working class-oriented accessories such as braces and Dr. Martens work boots. However some mods remained. In 1970’s – the famous mod band The Jam forms in 1972. In 1979 the famous mod film Quadrophenia was realsed. This enlighten the mod scene one again. The Jam and other bands created a new wave of music for mods. Late 1970’s – Mod Rivalary. Due to the increasing number of subcultres there was now more rivulary. The main ones being at scooter rallies in locations such as Scarborough and the Isle of Wight. 1980s- Mod scene in Los Angeles and Orange County was partly influenced by the 2 Tone ska revival in England 1990s- 1990s Britpop scene featured noticeable mod influences on bands such as Oasis, Blur, Ocean Colour Scene and The Verv 2000 – Artist such a Miles kane and Jake Bugg show and mod influence.
