In this unit I will individually produce a double page and front cover feature spread article for
MIXMAG magazine. Within these various tasks we are asked to conduct research which will help us
develop our original ones. Within this report I will include a biography about Adam Who, Produce a
detailed profile of the MIXMAG reader and then finally outline the codes and conventions of the
MIXMAG magazine.
The biography will include information on the person itself, e.g. background, birthplace
Georges Saint Pierre known, as Adam Who is 21 years old who was born in Birmingham at
Heartlands hospital, he was born on the 1st January 1991 at 11am. His father was a keen
businessman and his mom was the chairman of OFCOM. His parents were wealthy and financial
backing was inevitable for young Pierre.
His childhood included a lot of traveling this was because his dad was a very busy business man, his
lived in Birmingham, Manchester and Southampton, finally moving to London at the age of 10
(hasn’t moved since then). During his school days he was always keen on music and sports although
he wanted to pursue a career in mixed martial arts he later suffered an injury from a practice
session. Via method of submission from a fellow sparring partner in kings heath MMA; which
prevented him from doing so, He was also a good musician and took this up at GCSE he excelled in
this particular subject and achieved a grade A* which changed his mind and now wanted to become
a some sort of artist of musician.
After coming to terms that his mixed martial arts career was out the window due to an injury, he
looked for another future, which was music. His previous habits and lifestyle before music came
were very different, he was a fitness fanatic and his dress sense included all types of clothes from
pairs of jeans to typical joggers. Now his habits and lifestyle has changed, his dress sense changed he
became more casual and sophisticated and his lifestyle too.
Young Pierre’s Style of music varied he was good on the piano, good on the violin and his voice was
also at a good level he received recognition across North London, he participated in local events and
gigs in which keen organization’s looking for were around.
His released a single which was called ‘the abyss’ which was recorded and produced at ‘ alum rock
productions’, this album itself brought more recognition this time around the UK and Ireland, it was
popular 2 million You tube views and counting.
His aspirations are to become as famous as the late Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley but only
difference is he wants to achieve this in the dance genre. Another aspiration he has is to become a
worldwide phenomenon in all dance clubs across the world from the USA to Tokyo.
Now moving onto the profile of the typical MIXMAG reader.

In my eyes I will say that MIXMAG readers are confident and lead/own the club. These kind of
people also make products/accessories look cool, and make certain music tunes seem good by
talking about them and listening to.
MIXMAG readers are one of the first people to recommend a particular music tune/ instrument and
fashion items/clothing to people. They know the latest this could be linked to new tunes being
released or up and coming DJ’S getting involved in clubs they might attend. When going out the
probably always at the best and coolest club in town were theirs a feel of sophistication and fun at
the same time. Going off topic they will most likely have the latest phone i.e. IPhone 5. Also these
kinds of people will also pay and download for any latest tunes and gadgets that are out.(Even if
their current one is less than six months old).
In my opinion I think that the average age for a MIXMAG reader will be 26, reason I’m saying this is
because I have a example to back this up;
The median age of a Mixmag reader is 26 - 72% male, 28% female - and they tend to be urban and
single.
This information also tells us that males read it more than females.
A typical MIXMAG reader will be a sophisticated person, who has a good understanding of people
around he/she, they will be educated to a good degree and this will mean they will have ‘high
disposable income’ and ‘high propensity’ to spend it on, this might include; They have a high
disposable income and a high propensity to spend it on the following; the latest fashion (buying new
clothes), downloaded/buying latest tunes, nights out at top clubs and finally having all the latest
gadgets.
Nearly 80% do not read another music magazine and they spend little time watching TV, especially
at weekends. This is typical for this kind of person as they might have to go to various events and
tours which will include ‘sophistication’ and people like themselves, they want to mix in, socialise
and make new mates who are the same as them and have the same interests also.
In my opinion I feel that this magazine can be for both genders but leaning towards the male
audience, the reader profile says that the median age of the reader is 26 so it could be from the age
of 22 up to 28. The readers income is quite high although this reader profile does not give any
figures
Personally I think that the MIXMAG magazine can be read by anyone who has a good, stable income
coming in and someone who just enjoys music on a whole, MIXMAG can be read by either male and
female because their s elements within this magazine that both genders will be interested in.
Now moving onto the codes and conventions of the MIXMAG magazine.

3. First of all I will start of with the codes and conventions of a typical MIXMAG front Cover, here it is;
First of all the main image this is the biggest image on the page size wise it usually hints out the
theme and the mood of the magazine on a whole. Some magazines have the person facing to one
side or looking at directly at you, if the image is looking directly at you this is called ‘direct mode of
address’, this is a good technique because in my opinion I think it gets the reader more
involved.Now moving onto the Masthead, you can call this the title and this is found on top of the
front cover, the size of this particular title is a good one, usually in a large font. The style of the way
it is written has to link to the genre that the magazine is trying to tell the audience. The barcode is
used to scan it when actually purchasing product from a shop, it is also included for security reasons.
Date and Price, This reflects how much content the magazine has (the magazine will be more
expensive if there is more content), the date is also key theirs a new magazine published every
month, the date can be found on the bottom of the front cover, this is key in my eyes as people who
are interested in past MIXMAG articles can purchase by following the date vice versa.The Colour
scheme you use has to reflect the mood and genre of the magazine. Taglines are also included,
positioning statement and buzz words are also involved, buzz words such as ‘plus’ and ‘exclusive’, all
these different elements make the cover better no matter the size or proportion of any element.
The Issue number, this shows how established the magazine is. Now Moving ontoInserted images,
other images tell the reader what will be inside the magazine and often illustrate the cover lines, this
backs up important text and other relevant information related to the article..Promotional buzz
words- for example, Free CD, this usually attracts a reader as this is something different and unique.
Cover lines, lines of text that show what will be in the magazine. This is good as it will inform people
what is involved within the magazine, some people might not like the visual side, so having text is
key.
Contents Page
In the contents page the images used on a contents page will relate to different articles and will also
be beside the page number of that particular article. Columns are also broken into various sections;
for example, News and Features, columns tell you different types of information which is relevant to
the article. The text found on a contents page is usually no more than 12pt (with the exception of
subtitles/ column headings) because they need to fit on as much information as possible. Also there
is often one large image used that will reflect the main article/ double page spread. Page numbers-
found beside the article name or pictures relating to the article, These will indicate where you are in
a particular article or magazine.
Now moving on to the codes and conventions of a typical MIXMAG double page spread, here it is;
First of all I think that a MIXMAG double page spread has a main image always which is relevant to
the article, what I’ve noticed is that themain text is bigger than the other text, the reason this is, is
because people want the relevant and most important information. Columns are also used to write
text in about a particular article which is involved within the magazine. The use of simple colour
scheme- (colours keep to a minimum) also is good in my opinion reason being is because it is

4. understandable and easy to follow for the audience. Theirs always one large picturewhich takes up
to a whole page and sometimes bleeds between pages this creates a unique and an information
packed effect.
Quotes are used sometimes in the title/headline on the picture stand first or to break up the text,
these quotes may often hint what the whole magazine is about and what to expect when reading.
The stand first introduces the article and is positioned at the beginning of the headline; this indicates
clearly and makes the audience aware of what they are reading about. Other techniques for the
same thing include bold text, slightly bigger type space, capitals at the start of the article; this is also
linked tostylized fonts. Headlines are used to draw the reader in but don't tell them what the articles
about that’s done by stand first, what headlines do is they catch the readers eye and attention,
having something like this will ensure more concentration when the reader is reading. Not forgetting
the Byline, this usually makes us aware of who wrote a certain article and also credits people such as
photographers,This is good as particular maybe an interest for a particular reader. Articles are also
laid out into columns, reason being is because it gives the whole page a structure which makes it
more understandable and easy to read. Finally the Strap line this is at the top, this usually tells you
what the article is about, this needs to be short and snappy for maximum effect.
Overall I think that MIXMAG can be read by anyone that is interested in music and fashion. In my
eyes whether your male or female theirs something in it for everyone. If you have a stable income
coming In theirs no reasons why you can’t subscribe and get a monthly upgrade.
