2. What is distribution?
Distribution means the action of sharing something out among a number of
recipients. Film distribution is when, where and how the makers of the film are
going to advertise it. The distributor may set the release date of a film and the
method by which a film is to be exhibited or made available for viewing.
It includes-
•
Acquire rights –Distributes (sells) the film
•
Release strategy –When will it be released
•
Exhibition deals –Marketing promotions (Posters, trailers etc.)
3. Examples of distribution companies
There are over several different types of distribution companies, some of these
distribution companies are; 20th century fox, Lionsgate, Warner bros, Walt Disney,
Universal, Icon, Sony, Paramount and more.
Distributors sign a formal agreement with the producer, sales agent or studio,
specifying the rights they hold in respect of the title. These normally include the
right to release in the UK cinemas and promote it in all media before and during
its release.
4. Comparing my film
Paramount Pictures Corporation is a film and television production/distribution
studio, consistently ranked as one of the largest (top-grossing) film studios. It has
distributed various commercially successful film series, such as Shrek,
Transformers, Mission: Impossible, Marvel Cinematic Universe (2008–2011), Indiana
Jones (1981–2008), Star Trek, Jack Ryan, Jackass, Beverly Hills Cop, Crocodile
Dundee, Paranormal Activity, and G.I. Joe.
I have compared Paramount Pictures distributing Paranormal Activity with my
film ‘Haunted thoughts’ because as they distributed Paranormal Activity, I think
Paramount pictures would be interested in my film because the genre is a thriller
and horror and they have distributed Paranormal Activity as well as many
different other genre’s of films.
5. Audience
My film ‘Haunted thoughts’ is going to be aimed at a wide audience of
people, It will not just been shown in the UK but it will be shown all across the
world. We wanted to make the film world wide so it is available for anyone to
watch and enjoy.
6. Marketing strategies, release
strategies and
exhibition options
We would talk directly to our fans, whilst using social websites such as
‘Facebook’ and ‘Twitter’ will be a good way of seeing our market –research
and finding and getting hold of the best information for the research in our film.
We will be honest with our customers to get the best view across to them so
more people want to go and watch it. For example horror films such as
‘Paranormal Activity’ shows and focusses on marketing the audience’s
petrified responses to the film itself.
7. Self Distribution
Advantages for self distribution
-You can retail full control and rights over your film, giving you the choice where
your film is shown.
-You do not have to give a cut of the money made from any sales of your film to
a distributor.
Disadvantage for self –distribution
-It can be a full time job, being very time consuming chasing buyers, sales, and
filling in paperwork.
It could limit your options for sales as distributors have established relationships
with buyers and many buyers may only be interested in packages of films.
You need to be very careful and make sure you are not signing away rights to
your film that will prevent you from showing it elsewhere.
