1. Target Audience Research Conclusions – Interview Results
Firstly we interviewed a male and female with similar ages (Oliver on the top
left and Jess on bottom the right), this was done purposely so it matches our
target audience of people ages 15 to 30, these are our younger sample people.
We then interviewed people in this category but in the older section (Mrs
Hampton-Riddington on the bottom left and Mr Scargill on the bottom right).
Question 1 – Do you listen to music regularly?
As expected both all of our candidates answered with yes they do regularly
listen to music, this was not a shock as most people have Ipods or MP3 players
to listen to their music.
2. Question 2 – Where do you purchase your music from?
Both of our younger candidates answered the same that they tend to purchase
their music from ITunes, again not a shock answer as downloading music is
becoming a more popular way for younger audiences to purchase their music.
This helped us establish that the younger in the age group 15-30 tend to use
ITunes more so than buying from shops, meaning when we create our music
video ITunes would be a good source to sell from. Our older female candidate
also said that she mostly uses iTunes, however our older male candidate said
he uses Amazon to buy his music. Amazon is also a well established source to
buy music from, however more so used by older people because older people
tend to have MP3’s instead of Ipods which Amazon is used more for.
Question 3 – What genre of music do you listen too?
Our male candidate Oliver answered ‘Folk Music’ and our female candidate
Jess answered ‘Chart music’. With chart music usually having singer
songwriters within it we were able to establish that our target audience would
be more females from the ages 15-30. However even though Oliver said he
prefers Folk music he did say ‘Of Monsters and Men’ which are a Folk band,
however elaborate some of the singer songwriter features for example they
play instruments and some of their songs are quite personal to them, like
‘Little Talks’ which is about being in love. Therefore we cannot rule out males
being a part of our target audience, because there may be more males like
Oliver who like the aspects of singer songwriters. Our older female candidate
said that she doesn’t have a particular genre she listens to, which is good
feedback still, because she didn’t completely rule out singer songwriters.
However Mr Scargill chose Rock as his most listened to genre, which supports
the idea of males preferring heavier music as explored in our survey.
3. Question 4 – Who is your favourite artist?
Already establishing that Oliver’s favourite artist was ‘Of Monsters and Men’,
we see that the band have singer songwriter aspects of which we could include
in our music video to attract more males to the genre. Jessica however
answered her favourite artist was ‘Ed Sheeran’ which seems to be the most
popular answer as in our survey he was the most popular within the female
choice. This suggests that he has many aspects that the female audience like,
for example it might be his laid back or appearance or the fact he can play
instruments such as the guitar. We can take this into account and try to include
it in our music video to try and meet the expectations of our female audiences.
Ed Sheeran Of Monsters and Men
Our older candidates had answers which suit their favourtite genre, for
example our male candidate said his favourite artist was ‘Porky Pine tree’,
again supporting the idea of males preferring a band instead of solo artist. Mrs
Hampton-Riddington makes a very useful point that she likes ‘Billy Joel’ again a
solo Rock artist, but has aspects of singer songwriters because he plays the
guitar, and the candidate says she likes him because ‘of his clever ways he
writes his music’ and ‘he tells a story’. This is useful because it backs up our
point about popular artists having meaningful songs and music, with stories
that may relate to them.
4. Question 5 - If you were to watch a music video what form of media would
you use to watch it?
Together both Oliver and Jess answered that they tend to watch the music
videos on ‘YouTube’, this may be because YouTube is a quick, easy and free
way to view pretty much any video in the world and especially music videos.
This will be taken into account when streaming our music video; however we
may not need to place it on YouTube as our audience tends to do that, because
it is popular for people to add videos they like onto their account for others to
watch. Jess did also say she uses the music channels as well as YouTube, which
is another popular way for artists to steam their music videos, and again we
will take this into account when thinking about showing ours to our audience.
Our older female candidate also answered that she uses the Television to
watch music channels, which is understandable as older people may find it
easier to look on television instead of searching on YouTube. However this is
contradicted because Mr Scargill says he uses YouTube, therefore this tells us
our older female audiences may prefer to use their televisions, whilst our older
male audience prefers YouTube.
Question 6 – If you were watching a music video by a singer songwriter what
would you expect to see?
Jess answered this question with ‘a video with a storyline, something to keep
the viewer interested’ and Oliver answered with to ‘focus on the singer’. These
answers are very useful to us, because these are the main characteristics
shown in most singer songwriter music videos. With the most popular singer
songwriter music videos showing these two characteristics it proves to us that
these will be a vital part to include in our music video, as it will meet the
expectations of our audience. For example a popular music video currently is
Pink’s single ‘Try’ being about never giving up in relations ships, and the video
shows her and a man dancing and always getting up when each other throw
one another to the ground. Mr Scargill answers this question well will ‘lip
sinking’ and to see the artist ‘playing an instrument’, which both ideas support
our research of we need to have a good performance which incorporates the
5. lip sinking, and also follow the characteristic of singer songwriters playing an
instrument in their videos. Our older female candidate said she would like to
see the artist them self in the music video, again an important point that will
be considered when we make our music video.
Question 7 – If you were to buy an album what would attract you to it, other
than the music?
Both candidates answered the same for this question which was that the
‘album cover or artwork’ was the main attraction for them. This is important
for us, because it shows our album artwork needs to be attractive for our
target audience to convince them to buy it. Mrs Hampton-Riddington
understandably answered this question with the ‘price’ of the album will
attract her, because if it is too expensive she would be put off buying it. We
will have to think about the price of our music video, as it can’t be too high as
it may put people similar to this candidate off purchasing it. However our older
male candidate makes a useful point about basing his purchase on the
‘reviews’ of the artist or album, meaning we would need to get a successful
name within the music world if people like Mr Scargill were to purchase our
music.
