1. Target Audience Research Conclusions – Survey Results
Concluding question one, we chose to ask people from ages 5 and over so we could have a
wide variety of ages answering the questionnaire. We found that most were aged between
16 and 30, this may because this age group would be more accessible to being involved in
the charts and recognising solo singer songwriters, where this genre can be mostly found.
Also almost a quarter of the feedback results show to be answered by 31-45 year olds, this
will be taken into account when considering our target audience.
Question two showed us that more females than males answered our survey, even though
we tried to make the split between males and female as even as possible. This suggests our
main audience will be slightly more female than male, this may be because the genre is not
similar to rock, drum and base or similar which males usually prefer to listen too. Instead it
can be a very mellow genre which more females would be interested in listening too as they
are considered to be a more emotional gender.
2. Within question three we discover the point about females preferring singer songwriter is
true as more than half of the pie chart shows this. Also the males were shown to pick rock
which supports the point made in question two abut males preferring a heavier genre like
rock or drum and base.
For question four we see that storyline and performance have the biggest vote, due to
perhaps both relating to each other because you can’t have a good storyline without a
convincing performance. This will be taken into account when constructing our music video,
making sure our story line is relevant to the song with our actors giving a good quality
performance, with this we should meet the expectations of our audience.
3. The narrative/storyline seem to take the vote in this three way split, this may because singer
songwriters music has the ability to tell the story through their songs due to it being more
personal, therefore the audience will see more storyline through the narration of the songs.
It seems to be getting more popular for singer songwriters to have a mix of performance
and narrative/storyline in their videos, because it can be attractive for audiences to buy the
music videos as well as CD’s if they are worth watching.
Bright colours and artwork seem to be the most popular answers for what attracts the
target audience to a CD cover. The bright colours will be because it would be eye catching to
see, as brighter colours connote a happier vibe than what darker ones do. Also the artwork
would need to be attractive as the artist can be expressed through the artwork, and if the
audience can see the artist on the front cover it is usually more attractive to see.
4. Here question seven shows that MP3 is the most popular way for our target audience to
listen to their music, this may be because music downloads are becoming a more popular
way t get music as it can be streamed straight to your MPP3 player. This is making shops
that sell music harder for business, because everyone buys their music off Itunes for
example. This will be important when thinking about creating our advert as we will have to
advertise for downloading off streams like Itunes etc. Internet and television are also
popular choices in this question, which shows us that we need to have a good music video
as a lot of people tend to listen to music this way. It can also be an attracting method of
convincing the audience to buy the CD or video.
Question 8 – Who is your favourite singer songwriter?
For question eight we could not construct a graph or chart to show our results, because it
was such an open question. To conclude the results we found the most popular artist for the
younger females was Ed Sheeran and the most popular for the older females was Robbie
Williams. This may be because Ed Sheeran is of a younger age compared to Robbie Williams
and therefore a younger audience will be able to connect to his music easier, which is the
same case for Robbie Williams connecting to an older audience. For the males aged 15-30 it
showed that Maroon 5 were the most popular choice, this may be because the group’s
music ranges from modern to quite old school which gives them the ability to be popular
within both younger and older audiences. This concludes that our female’s audience prefers
solo singer songwriters, instead of groups like the males did. The males also showed to like
The Script, where as the females likes Pink and Adele which again supported our idea that
our main target audience will be females 15-30 and 31-45.
