What is an audience?
• An individual or collective group of people who read or
consume any media text.
• Examples : Radio listeners, Television viewers,
newspaper and magazine readers.
Audience Expectation of Genre
Generally, the audience expect the following from our chosen
genre:
• Gore
• Blood
• Tension
• Enigmas
• Jump scares
Audience Expectation of opening sequence and
genre
Generally, the audience expect the following in horror opening
sequences:
• Dark location
• Blood
• Gore
• Character or characters are introduced
• Dark music
• Tension
• Isolated/ Abandoned areas
Institution: Blockbuster or Independent?
We were mostly inspired by blockbuster films such as :
• World War Z
• Dawn of the Dead
• Resident Evil
• Zombie Land
But however as a group we felt that we would not be able to achieve CGI shots and Special Effects that these
blockbusters use and so we further researched into Independent films such as:
• VHS
• You’re Next
• Byzantium
• Black Rock
Which were in the Top 10 for best Indie Horror films.
Our opening sequence would be an Independent film because we believe we can achieve what an Independent
film offers on a low budget. Also we have seen that some of the best horror films are Independent.
The movie would be released in the UK and the US as our distributor ‘BRAIN DAMAGE FILMS’ is situated in the
USA. As it is set in the US we felt that by doing this it would branch our Opening Sequence out. If successful
then we would hope for it to be released globally because we want our product to be seen and
interpreted by a variety of people.
Exhibition: Because the film would be a horror film it would therefore be exhibited in the following ways:
• Cinemas: Curzon and Tricycle
• DVDs
• Amazon
• Lovefilm
Mass or Niche?
It is targeted at a Niche audience because:
• It will reach our target audience.
• Zombie films are not massively produced so therefore
audiences are limited.
• Below the line marketing is easier to promote the film.
What is a target and secondary audience?
Target Audience Secondary Audience
The intended group for which something is
performed or marketed; the specific group to
which advertising is directed.
Secondary audience is some one other than
the intended receiver who will also watch the
film.
Target Audience Details

by a zombie.
Age 15-25 Female protagonist is a teenager however the storyline can be
enjoyed by a wider age audience however as there is blood and

successful we can make it global with out risk

opening sequence at young adults ranging from high school
students to university students.
Sexuality N/A N/A

15 What you can show:
Strong violence
Frequent strong language
Nudity
Drug taking
What you cannot show:
Anything outside what and 18 and over can view.
18
Our opening sequence contains strong violence
such as a few scenes of blood and someone
getting bitten by a zombie which makes it falls
under the 15 certificate.
We chose 15 because there are horror aspects that may
unsuitable for younger viewers. Also there is strong violence
Applying Audience Theory
Altman : “A set of pleasures” McQuail: “Uses & Gratifications Theory: Reasons why
people seek the media”
What ‘pleasures’ are you providing the audience? How? Why?
The opening sequence is giving the audience pleasures through the enigma
It creates in order for the audience to want to see more.
It creates mystery as we wonder what happens to the woman.
-Does she die?
-Does she infect other people?
-How did the Zombie that infected the main character get infected?
Information :
To find out information that has to do with the society that they live in.
For self education
To gain a sense of creativity
To be able to get realistic advice or be able to discuss matters that interest individuals
How is this applied in our Opening Sequence?:
Audiences are made clear that the character is infected by the bite the Zombie had given
her and has the rest of humanity at risk.
Personal Identity:
To gain insight of themselves
To be able to find examples on how the should behave and what is acceptable and not
To identify personal opinions and states
How is this applied in our Opening Sequence?
It makes audiences aware is this was to happen in reality and what could they do to
survive. It will able audiences to put themselves in the characters shoes.
Integration & Social interaction:
To have insight of the circumstances of others to be able to relate or empathise
To be able to get a sense of belonging and not being apart from the society
To be able to connect with their social groups e.g. family, friends etc.
How is this applied to our Opening Sequence?
Similar to Personal Identity. Audiences are able to realise that humanity has each
other and it is all you have when a situation like this would happen. The outcome
would bring humanity together.
Entertainment:
To be able to relax
Emotional discharge
Filling time
It's a way to get away from reality to personal problems
How is this applied to our Opening Sequence?
After the opening sequence audiences begin to realise and become grateful for what
they have and see themselves lucky to be alive. It is a sign of relief knowing that it
can’t be bought to life.

  • 5. Institution: Blockbuster or Independent? We were mostly inspired by blockbuster films such as : • World War Z • Dawn of the Dead • Resident Evil • Zombie Land But however as a group we felt that we would not be able to achieve CGI shots and Special Effects that these blockbusters use and so we further researched into Independent films such as: • VHS • You’re Next • Byzantium • Black Rock Which were in the Top 10 for best Indie Horror films. Our opening sequence would be an Independent film because we believe we can achieve what an Independent film offers on a low budget. Also we have seen that some of the best horror films are Independent. The movie would be released in the UK and the US as our distributor ‘BRAIN DAMAGE FILMS’ is situated in the USA. As it is set in the US we felt that by doing this it would branch our Opening Sequence out. If successful then we would hope for it to be released globally because we want our product to be seen and interpreted by a variety of people. Exhibition: Because the film would be a horror film it would therefore be exhibited in the following ways: • Cinemas: Curzon and Tricycle • DVDs • Amazon • Lovefilm

  • 12. Applying Audience Theory Altman : “A set of pleasures” McQuail: “Uses & Gratifications Theory: Reasons why people seek the media” What ‘pleasures’ are you providing the audience? How? Why? The opening sequence is giving the audience pleasures through the enigma It creates in order for the audience to want to see more. It creates mystery as we wonder what happens to the woman. -Does she die? -Does she infect other people? -How did the Zombie that infected the main character get infected? Information : To find out information that has to do with the society that they live in. For self education To gain a sense of creativity To be able to get realistic advice or be able to discuss matters that interest individuals How is this applied in our Opening Sequence?: Audiences are made clear that the character is infected by the bite the Zombie had given her and has the rest of humanity at risk. Integration & Social interaction: To have insight of the circumstances of others to be able to relate or empathise To be able to get a sense of belonging and not being apart from the society To be able to connect with their social groups e.g. family, friends etc. How is this applied to our Opening Sequence? Similar to Personal Identity. Audiences are able to realise that humanity has each other and it is all you have when a situation like this would happen. The outcome would bring humanity together. Entertainment: To be able to relax Emotional discharge Filling time It's a way to get away from reality to personal problems How is this applied to our Opening Sequence?
