It is accomplished through more effective
products, processes, services, technologies, or
business models that are readily available
to markets, governments and society.

Mostly involves the practical realization of an
invention (i.e. new and improved ability) to
make a meaningful impact in the market or

Arrived in Vietnam 1965. Given command of Project Delta – Detachment B-52.
Reconnaissance unit was created to collect intelligence along Ho Chi Minh trail. He
fired most of the soldiers in the unit and started recruiting process with a flyer
WANTED: Volunteers for project Delta. Will guarantee
you a medal, a body bag, or both. Requirements: Have
to be volunteer. Had to be in the country for at least six
months. Had to have a CIB (Combat Infantry Badge).

• Stay in your “three foot world” during the
sprint

• Minimize distraction, shield engineers
• All efforts pointed in finishing a quality sprint
• If you can, do a round the clock development
• Keep the team fueled – mentally/physically
• No meetings except two 15 min meetings
(morning and evening), no status reports

• Core team: GM, HW/SW/Systems/QA
Architects, local + overseas PM, Biz Dev
• Other members: component/board/system or
mechanical and other designer as needed
• No finance person on the team
• Overseas team for execution

• Agile: 3-4 weeks for SW/Test development
• Staggered SW and QA/test
• Ownership at the lowest level
• When situation arises, deal with it right away
• Process only if it makes sense
• Any engineers can approach you any time

• No engineers in the blocked state for > 15 min
• No weekly/monthly status reports
• Every morning/evening touch base meeting

  • 20. 20 Organization • Core team: GM, HW/SW/Systems/QA Architects, local + overseas PM, Biz Dev • Other members: component/board/system or mechanical and other designer as needed • No finance person on the team • Overseas team for execution

  • 22. 22 Right Processes • Agile: 3-4 weeks for SW/Test development • Staggered SW and QA/test • Ownership at the lowest level • When situation arises, deal with it right away • Process only if it makes sense • Any engineers can approach you any time
  • 23. 23 Right Processes • Question anything, but only execution after decision is made • No engineers in the blocked state for > 15 min • No weekly/monthly status reports • Every morning/evening touch base meeting

  • 25. 25 Effective Product from Innovation • Engineer “in the wild” to get close to reality • Understand the User/Usages/UX • Understand the environment, problems and enhancements (articulated and unarticulated) • Close loop often (near real time development) • Engineers contribute to the solution
