Currently, rain-fed areas contribute 10% of Iran's total annual crop production of 8.7 million tons, including 31% of wheat, 34% of barley, and 48% of pulse crops. Optimization of rainwater use could help increase agricultural output and rural incomes in Iran's semi-arid rain-fed regions.

Market Gardening and Poverty Reduction in Jakiri Subdivision North West Regio...Journal of Agriculture and Crops
Poverty reduction has been one of the main objectives of major international organisations like FAO, World Bank, UNICEF and governments’ especially those of Africa. This study contributes to the fight against poverty through the analysis of market gardening as a strategy to poverty reduction in the Jakiri municipality. Data were collected through household interview, focus group discussion, interview of personnel of the ministry of agriculture and rural development, councils, religious heads and local chiefs) and field observations. Data were analysed by descriptive statistics, correlation and regression. The findings revealed that 73% of the market gardeners in Jakiri subdivision did not attend secondary school, lack skills to compete for jobs in urban areas. Agriculture particularly market gardening was their major source of income generating activity as more than 75% of the household income comes from market gardening. Also, more than 80% of what is produced is sold. Moreover, 90% of the gardeners in Jakiri subdivision think that if government could help them improve on their productivity their livelihoods will improve and this will take them out of poverty. There are high expectations that the income and the number of market gardeners will rise over time and space. This can be seen by the number of farmers involved and their earning where more than 70% earn from 1,000,000FCFA and above per year, an average of 83,334FCFA and above per month. Targeted marketing development strategies need to be followed by market gardeners and various stakeholders in Jakiri to better exploit the economic potential of these crops and at the same time maintaining its contributions to the local crop diversity.Best utilization of water resources.pdf

Climate change has also made domestic rice production insufficient to meet demand. The Ojibwe people of the Great Lakes region in North America have traditionally relied on harvesting wild rice, but yields are declining due to rising temperatures and other environmental impacts of climate change, threatening their centuries-old cultural practices tied to the plant.

- 1. Rainwater use optimization The agriculture sector in Iran is one of the most important economic sectors in the country. According to the forecast update 2010 agriculture provided 13 percent of GDP 22 percent of employment 20 percent of non oil exports. Considering moisture in day most of the rain fed areas are classified a semi arid with average annual precipitation of 200 to 600 mm. Precipitation distribution pattern varies in different seasons as an average in rain fed areas 28% is received in autumn, 44% in winter,23 % in spring and the 5% remaining in summer. The total arable land of Iran is about 19 M.ha. Total rainfed areas is about 10 M.ha within 4 M.ha are annually kept under fallow and the 6.3 M.ha is under cultivation. The main agricultural crop productions of Iran are wheat, Barley, Potato, rice and sugar. Presently the contribution of rainfed areas toward national annual crop production is 10 percent but the rainfed production play's important role in major crop. 31 percent of Wheat, 34 percent Barley and 48 percent of pulse crop product in rainfed areas. The total rainfed agriculture is about 8.7 M tons.
