Synthesis Of Cross-Linked Hydrogels From
Xanthan Gum Under The Influence Of
Microwave Radiation
Topic
Introduction
 Gums are well known since ancient times as a product of plants. Plants
produce gums to protect themselves as a response of biotic stresses.
 Term “GUM” can be described as complex polysaccharides that on
dissolving can form a gel, gelatinous solution.
 Gums were in use since the time of civilization, ancient Egyptians, gums
used for gluing strips of clothing for binding mummies.
 Many types of gums can be obtained from plant sources.
Introduction
 Xanthan gum is a sugar-like
compound made by mixing aged
(fermented) sugars with a certain
kind of bacteria.
Natural
gums
Synthetic
gums
Types of gums
1 2
 Use as a saliva substitute for
dry mouth.
 stabilize blood sugar.
 Lowering cholesterol levels in
people with diabetes
 Stomach Issues.
 Helps in drug delivery
system
 sustaining the drug
release
Advantages of synthetic gum
Advantages
Prevents cavities and
strengthens enamel
Improves memory Helps you lose
weight
Reduces stress and
anxiety
Disadvantages of synthetic
gums
Tooth Decay. Sugared gums can
with heavy use cause tooth
decay, gum disease and cavities.
Jaw Stress. ...
Stomach Issues. ...
Social distraction. ...
Irregular development of facial
muscles.
Natural gums
Advantages of natural gums
 Biodegradable
 Biocompatible
 Low cost
 Environmental friendly processing
 Local availability
 Better patient tolerance as well as public acceptance
 Edible source
Need of the project
We use natural gums because synthetic gums are harmful in
pharmaceutical.
Synthetic gums have many side effects
Side products will formed and it is difficult to deal with these side
products.
• biodegradable
• low in cost
• Environmental friendly processing
Aims and Objectives
The current project has been planed to
Synthesize of Cross Linked hydrogels From Xanthan Gum Under the
influence of microwave Radiation
And further characterize them by using different bioanalytical
techniques
Aims and objective
1 • Production of cross-linked hydrogel from natural gum(xanthan gum)
2
• Study the effect of microwave radiation during polymerization
3
• Study the effects of multiple factors like reaction time ,PH and solvent on the
production of hydrogel
4
• Characterization of hydrogels using FTIR,SEM,XRD
Material and method
 All chemicals and reagents use in this study will be purchased from
either E. Merck (Darmstadt. Germany) or Sigma-Aldrich (Buchs,
Switzerland)
 The plants biopolymer matrices will be purchased form local
markets and stores within Pakistan.
 Sample identification and authentication will be done in
Department of Botany, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad.
 Pretreatment and purification of sample:
 Solution preparation
 Grinding of gum-Pretreatment and purification-Identification of gum
 Proximate Analysis (Moisture, Ash , crude Fiber, crude fats contents)
 Purification
 Biochemical Parameters (Protein contents, sugar contents)
 Antioxidant Activity
 Total Phenolic Contents
 Antibacterial Activity
 Antifungal Activity
 Gelation Properties
 Crosslinking of Xanthan gum (Acrylamide, Citric acid)
 Characterization (XRD, FTIR, SEM, TGA, DSC)
 Statistical analysis
