LOUD (ALBUM) VS. ONLY GIRL IN THE WORLD
vs.
COSTUME
There are instant similarities at first glance between the costumes. The colours are the same with slightly
different dress code, as in the album she’s wearing a white dress and in the video she is wearing a white top. The
reason for this could possibly be because in the album she is posing for a photo which will have had a lot of
thought into it showing her beauty and elegance, whereas in the video she changes costume a few times but
keeps colours as similar as possible. Her hair is bright red in both video and album. The synergy in colour helps
give her album a visual style with the colours of white and red connoting to love and passion.
CHARACTER
There is extreme similarities in the character Rhianna is trying to portray. The lack of direct mode of address
highlights her as mysterious. Whilst direct-mode of address is a method to attract the male gaze, having her
eyes closed also attracts the male gaze as it draws the audience to wonder what she is thinking and wanting to
see her eyes open. Re-enacting this pose with her hair styled the same gives her a visual style as an artist but
also gives the entire album a visual style.
LIGHTING
In terms of lighting the lighting does differ. In the video the lighting is much lighter and pinker whereas the
album is a bit darker with a slightly blue hint to it. This could possibly be the album trying to reflect other
songs within the album, but all in all it shares the same pinky colour.
LOCATION
In some parts of the video the location is almost exactly the same, with Rhianna laying except a big rose bush,
although on the album all the roses are red and in the video the roses vary in shade. The actual CD itself is a
rose of lighter shade like in the video. The use of same location helps show that the song ‘Only Girl In The
World’ is the song that reflects the album most. It was a number one hit song which is porbably a big reason for
this as it makes the album more notorious and recognisable.
SUMMARY
USING THE SAME MISE-EN-SCENE ACROSS TWO DIFFERENT PLATFORMS IS A
HUGE WAY OF PROMOTING AN ALBUM AS I HAVE SEEN IN THE RESEARCH. THE
SYNERGY CREATES A RECOGNISABLE VISUAL STYLE. WHEN DOING MY
PRODUCTION I WILL DEFINITELY DO THIS.
