In late October our class explored the Los Penasquitos Trail in Sorrento Valley and collected
samples of the area s vegetation, water sources and soil. We hiked early in the morning on a dry,
dirt trail surrounded by drought resistant landscaping. The soil samples for this experiment were
collected from the descending end of a hill leading down to the Wagon Creek Bridge. It was our
assumption that this area would have more microorganisms because of the increased foot traffic.
The purpose of this report is to discuss the bacteriawe discovered in our soil sample. The samples
were kept in plastic tubes with a closed lid until we were ready for analysis. One gram of the soil
was measured out from the tube and mixed with 20ml of deionized water. A serial dilution was
prepared consisting of five glass test tubes filled with 9ml of culture broth. Afterwards, 1ml of the
soil was piped from the center of the sample and placed into the first tube of the serial dilution. We
lightly capped each tube and incubated the sample under a ventilation hood at room temperature
(~24ВєC) for 48 hours. After the incubation period the samples were mixed well will a vortex. We
then piped 1ml of the first dilution into the second dilution and mixed thoroughly with the vortex.

chose the people of Israel. The importance of Jerusalem in the Jewish religious tradition can be

sacred. However, these events alone do not make Jerusalema sacred place; the biblical texts also
work together to portray the importance and holiness of Yahweh, the Godof Israel. The concept of
sacredness is also highlighted by Mircea Eliade, who theorized about how a sacred place comes
into existence. The biblical texts support Eliade s ideas of the sacred by narrating repeated
hierophanies and promises, working together to reveal the importance of the divine to the people
of ancient Israel. Eliade s primary concept is that of the axis mundi, around which everything
else revolves. An axis mundi is a connection between earth and the supernatural, where humans

When first picking up this novel, the thick stack of pages intimidated me, but now I want to keep
turning those once ominous pages. King s writing style and the characters he develops within the
pages are the two characteristics that have lead to me enjoying The Stand, so I shall evaluate
them. First, I appreciate Steven King s style of writing. The way the author writes entertains me
because he describes the characters and settings in a way that does not bore me to death. In the
past, I have been forced to read classics like To Kill a Mockingbird and Tom Sawyer, which are

Every day we hear about violence in the news, about terrorists, shooters, and robbers that we do
not associate with ourselves. However, hidden within everyone is that innate evil as is shown
through Golding s story. The novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is set on an
uninhabited island where a group of young British boys find themselves stranded without any
adults. Overcoming their joy, the boys develop a society of sorts, finding ways to survive and get
rescued. However, the civilizationdivides. Some of the boys go astray, their primitive instincts
emerging through their actions as they become more violent. The boys lose their identities as
cultured humans. They revert to the nature of pre civilization beings with the aid of the masks
they don in order to hunt as well as to identify savages. Golding develops the characters,
specifically Ralph and Jack, showing the loss of their innocence and steady maturing. However,
overly exposed to the wild, Jack and the hunters id, or their instincts unbounded by society or

boys on the island lose their sense of identity. Jack and his hunters made clay masks in order to
hunt, claiming the pigs they preyed upon did not smell them but saw them. As he set the mask

As a member of the United States military, there are times that the very freedoms that are being
defended are not extended to those sailors and soldiers that are in charge of that task. One of
those freedoms is freedom of speech. As a veteran of the United States Navy, I find the limitation
of speech for a member of the militaryto be contradictory at best. The very fact that members of the
armed forcescannot speak freely about government officials, as well as government issues that
affect their lives, seems to be controversial because it limits one of the freedoms these sailors and
