Social Control In Metropolis
A great deal of fictional films and literature deal with the concept of society. Writers have played
around with the idea of societies that are different from the world we know. While some portray
this in optimistic ways and others darker, what these works have in common is the idea of social
control wherein people are forced to conform to means that are believed to benefit their society.
Fritz Langs 1927 silent film, Metropolisis an early example of this. The beginning shows machine
gears and workers marching towards a factory. This place is known as the Workers City, described
to be far below Metropolis, the city for the upper class founded by Joh Fredersen (Alfred Abel). The
lives of the workers and the rich are very different,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First of all, the set design was intricate and very detailed, especially in the factories where there
were gears and machines operating everywhere. Every inch brought the setting to life. There
was a clear distinction when switching from Metropolis to the Workers City that was seen in the
scene s setting. Moreover, the settings were given more depth by the frames and angles in
which they were shot. Many scenes would show the main subject or image centered in the
frame, and this was given emphasis with the use of dark shadows in contrary to a bright subject.
Shadows indeed played a big part in creating visuals. The technique of chiaroscuro, the contrast
between light and dark comes to mind, like in scenes that were more somber and serious (e.g.
carrying the dead bodies from the factory, Maria making prophecies about peace). In connection
with the concept of angles, Fritz Lang also had a commendable use of symmetry, which was
visually appealing especially with intricately designed sets. Lang also used lines in his shots,
adding style and flair to dramatic

Biblical Names In Toni Morrison s Song Of Solomon
People choose names for a reason, whether it is so that the child takes on a certain personality,
based on who they are named after, or so that he or she may carry on the name of a beloved
family member. Many names that are popular today are names from the Bible, since most of the
biblical characters possess characteristics that parents would want their child to have. Names like
Noah, Jacob, David, and Miriam, are names currently in the top 1000 child names in the world,
and they are all biblical names. Names from the Bibleare also found in many works of literature,
like Toni Morrison s Song of Solomon, a coming of age story about a young man during the mid
twentieth century. The reader is introduced to multiple characters with biblical... Show more content

Both women sacrificed something valuable, Reba her diamond ring and Rebecca her family
relationships, so that their children would be happy. The role of Reba in Song of Solomon is
that of a motherly figure, always putting her children first and not worrying about her own
needs. This description aligns well with biblical Rebecca, who sacrifices her relationship with
part of her family in order to please her son, Jacob. Reba is a kinder and more selfless version of
the Bible s version of Rebecca. Reba s aunt, Ruth Foster, has a name that is also associated with a
character in the Bible, also named Ruth. In the Bible, after her husband died, Ruth faithfully
stays with her mother in law, refusing to leave. One of Ruth s most notable quotes from the
Bible is as follows: Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you
go, I will go; Where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my
God. Where you die, I will die there will I be buried. May the Lord do thus and so to me, and
more as well, if even death parts me from you! (Ruth 1:16 17). In this quote, the reader can see
that Ruth is willing to stay by her mother in law s side no matter what, even claiming that she
would even die with her. Naomi, her mother in law, is a constant reminder of Ruth s husband, and
she refuses to leave her because Naomi is the only reminder she has of her late husband. In Song of
Solomon, after

How Did The Federalist Papers Influence The Ratification...
Section A: Identification and Evaluation of Sources This investigation will explore the
question: To what extent did The Federalist Papers influence the ratification of the Constitution?
The publications, arguments, and effects of this document will be the focus of the investigation
to allow for an analysis of where and in what ways The Federalist was influential during the
constitutional conventions from 1787 to 1789. The first source that will be evaluated in depth
is Ron Chernow s book Alexander Hamilton which was published in 2005. The origin of this
source is valuable because Chernow is a historian and writer who graduated from Yale university,
Pembroke College, and Cambridge. He has won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography and the
American History Book Prize and has written many books about the founding fathers and early
republic, indicating his extensive knowledge on the subject. The purpose of Alexander Hamilton
is to tell the story of the first secretary of the treasury and his influence on the new nation from
his birth in 1755 to his death in 1804. This is valuable, because as the author of more than half of
The Federalist, extensive knowledge on Hamilton s political pursuits and views is helpful in
creating an informed conclusion. However, since the main focus of the novel is Hamilton, the role
of Madison and Jay may have been downsized or less researched. Also, the focus of the book was
not the Constitutional convention and impact of the federalist papers, so

Compare And Contrast The Giver And Divergent
The Giver written by Lois Lowry is set in a so called perfect world free from fear and harm but
also from emotions, choices and memories. Jonas is seen to become the new receiver of memory
within the community, changing his views and feelings on the community and caused him to run
away and escape with Gabe. Themes such as the importance of memory, the relationship between
pain and pleasure and no feelings or emotions can be identified throughout the novel. Divergent
directed by Neil Burger is set in a dystopian city damaged by a great war. Beatris (Tris) finds that
she is a divergent within her community, and starts to become hunted by the leaders to destroy their
existence causing her and others to run away to safety from the factions. Fear, identity, values and
family can all be identified as major themes within the text. Through these settings, characters,
storylines and themes countless differences and similarities can be found between both The Giver
and Divergent.
Various similarities are highlighted between The Giver and Divergent through their settings,
characters, storyline and major themes throughout the texts. Numerous amounts of similarities can
be identified in The Giver s setting and Divergent s setting. Such things as both settings are seen to
be set in the future some time and both texts have elements of sameness throughout them like
having the same house within the community and in the factions of Divergent. The two texts also
show a main auditorium where

Designing A 3d Modeling Software
Once you have a 3D model the next step is to prepare it in order to make it 3D printable.
Preparing a 3D model to be 3D printed is called slicing. Slicing is dividing a 3D model into
hundreds or thousands of horizontal layers. This is done with software. It can sometimes be done
within a 3D modeling software application. Certain 3D printers require a certain slicing tool. Once
the 3D modelTo begin 3D printingyou first have to make a virtual design of the object that you
want to create. The virtual design is a CAD (Computer Aided Design) file. A CAD file is created
using a 3D modelingapplication or with a 3D scanner. A 3D scanner is used to make a 3D digital
copy of an object.
3D scanners: Microsoft and Google have recently created hardware that can perform 3D scanning.
An example of this is Microsoft s Kinect. Soon digitizing real objects into 3D models will become
much easier. Smartphones may even have integrated 3D scanners.
3D modeling software: 3D modeling software comes in many forms. There s industrial grade
software that costs thousands of dollars a year, or there s a free open source software, like Blender.

on the brand and type of 3D printer you have. When a file is uploaded in a 3D printer, the object is
3D printed layer by layer. The 3D printer reads every slice and creates a three dimensional object.

Good Germs, Bad Germs
Many books that can be read will captivate you, can give you another world to live in, can sweep
you off of your feet and never set you back down again. Rarely can a book alter your view so
entirely about the world you live in, just by giving you more information about what exactly your
world is made up of. The book Good Germs, Bad Germs did this for me. Each chapter strategically
broke down the history of microbes and bacteriaand how they have been perceived (or not
perceived) throughout history. Each expanding step lists the theories that were building blocks
for the future of the study of microbes. From Nurse Nightingale, Colonel George Waring, Antoni
van Leeuwenhoek and Bonnie Bassler there were medical advances that helped the field of
medicine greatly. Even groups who did not believe in the germs made large steps to clean up the
population. Each person mentioned in the book had some sort of contribution to the start of
fighting against bacteria and viruses, with Nurse Nightingale disinfecting the work area, Waring
started cleaning up the streets and created the way to keep sewage separate from the drinking
water and Leeuwenhoek who identified bacteria in the first place. This entire book gives as much
information as possible without the reader needing a medical degree. It gave an in depth look at
the formation and the ability of bacteria to live within the body and outside the body and how the
body actually collects the bacteria. From attaining bacteria from the

The Uplifting Tale of Today Will Be a Quiet Day Essay...
The Uplifting Tale of Today Will Be a Quiet Day
Some readers see death, but when I read the story Today Will Be a Quiet Day by Amy Hempel, I
find it to be a light hearted, first hand account of people coping with transition. Even its location in
the table of contents under the heading Childhood and Adolescent (Barnet), implies that the story is
not about death at all. A newly defined family, one man, a boy and a girl, is faced with the aftermath
of divorce and explore among themselves the intricacies of life. The story gives us sublime but keen
insight into the transition and adjustments these three people make in this story.
The children s transition is marked by a rivalry, one that surfaces early on in the story and ... Show

There are many inferences to what it is like stepping into the life of a parent you don t live with but
once or twice a month.
This new family is only new in the sense of the father s having questions and doubts. Whether he
doubts his ability to read his children or has been absent too long is not indicated, but clearly this
family seems to be redefining their old relationship. The children handle it a bit differently by
speaking of topics that are old news (such as the boy s friend s suicide), telling jokes, and in the
case of the older sister, showing independence and maturity in deciding to drive her brother and
father home.
Sylvan Barnet comments that the father may be feeling that he may not know his children (1206).
As the story progresses the father gets his answers as many parents would in real life. The father is
an active listener and interrupts, defends or morbidly participates in the fun of his children s
conversation. At times he is reminded of how well he knows his children when he again looses his
appetite watching them eat fast. And once more when he quips, Who would adopt you? This means
that he is stuck with these wonderful children and they are stuck with him.
One of the more poignant moments in the story is when the daughter comes to realize her
gullibility in believing the family dog had escaped death to live a long happy life on a farm
(Barnet 1205). It is important to realize that this new little family is taking care of

Bravery Never Goes Out of Fashion in named William...
Character Analysis of Rikki Tikki Tavi
A famous English novelist named William MakepeaceThackeray once said bravery never goes out
of fashion, (BrainyQuote.com). Thackeray mainly shows that bravery is always right, and showing
bravery is even more significant. Rudyard Kipling s short story Rikki tikki tavi definitely illustrates
the importance of bravery. In this story, Rikki, a young mongoose, fights two malevolent and
threatening snakes in order to keep the garden secure. Rudyard Kipling sets this story as well as
most of his best stories in India, his birthplace (Allen 77). This author has written so many
exceptional stories that he received a Nobel Peace Prize for literature in 1907 (Allen 77). Rudyard
Kipling develops the theme ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This example shows that Rikki portrays loyalty by protecting the family and making sure that
nothing would come into the bungalow and harm them. Rudyard Kipling further describes
Rikki s loyalty to his family by showing that Teddy s father trusts Rikki to be loyal and respect
him (Kipling 80). Teddy s father shows his trust when he says Teddy is safer with that little
beast than is he has a bloodhound to watch him. If a snake came into the nursery now (Kipling
80). Rikki is also loyal to his mongoose beliefs. Rikki refuses to eat because he remembers that a
full meal makes a slow mongoose (Kipling 84). Rikki s dedication to his family and traditions
bring out his true loyalty.
Rikki is not only a loyal mongoose, he is very curious. Kipling shows Rikkis curiosity when
describing him saying: Rikki is curious and not easily frightened, (Kipling 80). This shows that
Rikki is not scared because he is so curious that nothing frightens him. Rudyard Kipling also
mentions Rikki s curiosity by another description saying that mongooses are naturally curious, and
Rikki is a true mongoose (Kipling 80). This shows that Rikki does take after true mongooses
nature of being curious. Rikki also says that he must attend to every noise he hears. Rikki s alert
and thirst to find out information in the garden shows curiosity. Basically, if Rikki hears or sees
something unusual he must investigate no matter how dangerous it could be.

Essay on European Music History
Questions to Consider: Europe
1. How is the history of European and Arabic cultural contact reveal through musical characteristics
in places such as Spain and Bulgaria?
In Spain, the authentic flamenco had just a singer. It had a strained type of timbre and melisma
was used a lot. It shows that there was Arabic influence because they also had that type of style.
And because they also used a guitar as accompaniment, it showed there was European influence
because they liked harmony. Bulgarian music also had harmonies but with voices. This was a
European characteristic. Their music is very colorful and lively and I think that was Arabic
influence.
2. What defines a music as classical as opposed to folk in the European context? How ... Show more

An easy to play folk instrument is the hurdy gurdy. In the text it even says it s foolproof . To play
it, you just have to turn a crank and press some keys.
A folk instrument needing more advanced techniques is the uilleann. It s from Ireland and it is the
more complex type of bagpipes in the world. It is complicating because it requires a lot of
coordination. A player has to use both of his arms and hands at the same time.
5. How are music and musical instruments used to express national identity in Europe?
I think the music and musical instruments expresses national identity in Europe because there are
different styles of music according to where they are from in Europe. And different countries have
different types of instruments. For example the bagpipes in Scotland. Many people recognize
music with pipes to be from Scotland or Ireland. Spain has flamenco and Russia has their balalaika.
They all express their nationality and where they are from. The countries in Europe have different
types of musical styles that are distinct to their own country and culture.
6. Is language a reliable demarcation of musical style in Europe? Why or why not?
I don t think language is a reliable separation of musical style in Europe because even if people
from different countries speak the same languages, they might have different types of styles. For
example, Ireland and Scotland are grouped together but their music is a bit different. They both play

Compare And Contrast The Satisfaction Theory Of Atonement
The premise of the whole Christian faith is that Christ died for humanity s sin but there is debate
amongst why his sacrifice did this. The disagreement in the exact way atonement was achieved by
death on the cross are seen in the multiple different theories. Christus Victor states that Jesus
Defeated the devil and evil at the cross, making his victory humanity s satisfaction. The Satisfaction
theory argues that Jesusdeath payed a debt owed thus making the satisfaction of the debt humanity s
victory. The Penal Substitution Theory is close to Satisfaction but is different in that it says a
penalty was required as a result of sin and Jesus substituted himself in humanity s place. Moral

According to this theory, every sin requires payment in return and Jesus death was the eternal
payment for sin. Some texts used to defend this theory include Isaiah 53:10 12, Mark 10:45, Matt
3:17, Matt 20:28, and Romans 3:23 25. The original author of the Satisfaction theory, St. Anslem
of Canterbury, was known as a unifier because when he came into his bishop position in
Canterbury there was great division in the community between the monks. According to R.W.
Southern, there were two different groups of monks at the cathedral and because of it the
community was still bitterly divided when he arrived, and Anselm was quite simply the only
person who could heal the division, and he knew it (Southern, 2009, pg. 52). In his mission to
unify, Anslem probably sought to bring the focus of Christians to the idea that Jesus satisfied
humanity s sin and away from disunity. The resurrection and ascension is significant in this theory
because if death is the payment for this sins committed. If Jesus remained dead, then he would be
still paying the price as opposed to paying it in full as shown in his resurrection back to life and

Overcoming the Challenges in OCHA Situation Report No. 1...
The main challenges identified from OCHA Situation Report No. 13 and my proposed actions to
overcome the challenges are as follows:
(a) The security situation remains as a challenge to operate humanitarian actions including conduct
vaccination activities, campaign for vaccination, smooth delivery of the programmes and
emergency assistance packages.
The security challenges in operating humanitarian actions and its consequences should be
communicated to the Government as well as to the Militias groups through media and all other
available communication channels. The opportunity of reaching a consensus to operate UN lead
humanitarian assistances for the most vulnerable population could be explored through the political

(e) Access to information remains a challenge in reopening of the schools.
Adequate campaign through the local leaders and local NGOs and CBOs and local media
campaign could reduce the information gaps and well as over this challenge.
(f) Obtaining reliable and updated IDP population figures is a significant challenge.
This challenge could be overcome through developing a database and conducting rapid survey to
the IDP camps both inside and outside the country. I think estimating the IDP population is
important for a reliable and effective plan for both humanitarian as well as long term development
interventions.
(g) Another major challenge is accessing information on human rights violations and collecting
protection related information.
Awareness raising of the community leaders is very important in strengthening protection as well
as accessing information on human rights violations. Training could be organized for the
community leaders and volunteers on t his issue as well as local NGOs and CBOs could be
supported for collecting information and provide support to the victims of violence.
(h) Draughts also affecting in increasing local food production and to reduce the burden of external
food aids.
FAO can continue exploring more drought resistance crop production and early furcating of local
food production so that Government and humanitarian agencies prepare advance plan to overcome
the upcoming challenge of low food

Themes In Dead Poets Society
In the Dead Poet s Society the racial, class, and gender identities of the characters are singular.
The boys in the movie attend an all male boarding school in which all the students are Caucasian.
In addition, the boys seem to come from wealthy families that can afford to send their boys to such
a prestigious boarding school. This monolithic starting point provides an opportunity for issues to
develop as cracks in the conservative façade.
Mr. Perry, Neil s father claims to come from a lower class upbringing and is obsessed with giving
his son opportunities that cost money such as medical school, Harvard, and the Welton Academy.
Mr. Perry s behavior, along with the conservative Academy and its repressive headmaster, echo and
the documentary of the McLean(VA) high schoolviewed in class. The documentary illustrated the
differences between a wealthy and poorer school. Taken together, these sources lead me to
believe that there is an enormous emphasis placed on class and wealth by the characters in the
movie. The boys in the movie are privileged for their ease of access to great education. None of
the boys in the movie work for the school or have jobs to pay for their schooling at the prestigious
Welton Academy which prepares them intensely for the best colleges available.
The boys in the movie may be privileged but the older generation, represented by, Headmaster
Nolan, and Mr. Keating, seem to have the greatest power and influence of any characters in the
movie.

Interpersonal Sharing In America
This interpersonal sharing lead to anime clubs appearing all over America, particularly on college
campuses, (Animation, 1991). These clubs laid out the foundation for anime to once again take root
in American culture, and with shows like PokГ©mon and Cowboy Bebop anime solidified its
position as a permanent piece of American culture, (Ladd Deneroff, 2009). In time, television
networks picked back up in showing anime, albeit not during their normal children s showtime, with
segments such as Toonami on Cartoon Network, (Borrelli, 2002). Americans even started to

The Power Of Power In The Bonfire Of The Vanities
Power is the ability to act on your own accord without any consequences to your own well being.
Additionally, it is the ability to influence the actions of the people around you in a way that
benefits you. The influence that power grants is one that allows a person to take control of their
life, and because of this, obtaining and holding powerhas been a basic desire of all humans since
the beginning of civilization. Power and its influence are clear components of the novel The
Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe
. In the novel, we find multiple powers that constantly affect
the actions of the story s characters. Some examples of these powers are the power of lust, the
power of the people, the power of the law, and the power of the media. Out of these powers, the
power of the media is easily the most influential power in The Bonfire of the Vanities because of
its ability to influence people s decisions, which is especially evident in Sherman McCoy s trial,
its ability to influence the opinions of large masses of people, and its ability to expose something to
a much bigger audience.
The media s ability to influence decisions is the most obvious and influential power that it holds.
In the Bonfire of the Vanities, the media s ability to influence decisions plays a huge role in the
prosecution of the main character, Sherman McCoy, and without the media s intervention,
specifically Peter Fallow s story, McCoy is not indicted, and the case is most likely not pursued by

Homelessness In America
A growing problem in America is homeless families. Most families that are homeless have at
least one or two children. Being homeless as a child can have severe effects on that child s
education and development. Homeless children may have trouble focusing in class not only
because they were not able to do the homework, but also because they may not have had enough
to eat or a decent place to sleep, and they may be emotionally overwhelmed by the upheavals in
their personal lives ( Over One Million U.S. Kids are Homeless ). Many things can contribute to
homelessness, for instance; poverty, lack of affordable housing, job loss, economic insecurity, etc.
America needs to stabilize shelters, move homeless people into permanent housing, execute
assistance programs to help people maintain their housing, and expand local government support for
the development of affordable housing units. Homeless shelters do already exist in America, but
most are filthy and are invaded with bedbugs and body lice. Most large homeless shelters do not
have proper ventilation, causing it to get extremely hot during the summer. Even though families do
stay in these shelters, it is unsafe and gross. Homeless shelters in America are mostly funded from
donations, meaning that homeless shelters do not have very large funds. Therefore, homeless
shelters should be funded by the government. With the proper funding, shelters could be properly
built and be able to maintain cleanliness. If homeless shelters

Sweetness and Power Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History
Some of the most brilliant minds have made many unorthodox suggestions. This is the case with

by substantial evidence. In general, Western education has conditioned students to believe that
everything productive originated in Europe.

lover of sugar, I have now given a considerable amount of thought to the sugar that I consumed so
often. The extent to which the Caribbean people and land were exploited is unfathomable. When
speaking of a plantation , Americans usually think and refer to the cotton plantations in the South.
Even those Americans with roots in the Caribbean are completely unaware of the exploitation of
their land and people. The long term effects of this exploitation led to the underdevelopment of
these Caribbean countries. These effects are still evident today as most of the Caribbean islands
are labeled as Third World Countries .
In addition, Mintz mentions the separation of the production from consumption. The Major
consumers of sugar were not the hard workers on the plantation, but the far removed citizens of
England. The plantation workers were not able to profit from the fruit of

Analysis Of Judith Slaying Holofernes
Judith Slaying Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi ultimately painted one of the most violent
representations of Judith in the history of art (Straussman Pflanzer, 12). Gentileschi was the only
woman painter of the Baroque period in her time. She was born in Rome in 1593 to Orazio
Gentileschi and Prudenzia Montoni. Artemisia was a follower of Caravaggio, whom art is
frequently considered primarily in terms of its naturalism (Straussman Pflanzer, 13). She also
learned the principles of art from her father and the basic perspective from Tassi.
In Judith Slaying Holofernes the woman represented in a yellow costly garment is no other than
Judith a Jewish widow. Despite her beauty for deceiving men, she is very brutal in revenge. By
easily gaining her way through the Assyrians she gracefully grabs the attention of the General
Holofernes, and then kills him by slicing through his neck with his own sword. She is then the
heroine figure for Bethulia, Jerusalem, the Temple, and the people (Judith 8:11 12).
The story of Judith is told to be a young religious widow from the Jewish city of Bethulia, chops
off the head of Holofernes, general of the Assyrian army that had attacked her city. Robin Gallaher
Branch states that Judith told the Bethulia leaders to meet her at her home where she could discuss
to them her plan on how to save the city from thirst by the enemy (Branch, 1). After getting the
approval from her city leaders they acclaim her for her wisdom and released her and

Choosing Homelessness
Deciding on the practitioner was a simple decision for me. I really feel as though social support
care providers need to have a lot of information about all persons. They have the opportunity to work
in many different locations such as but not limited to; hospitals, hospices, persons homes, work
environments, schools, shelters. These individuals are forced to be prepared for anything that is
thrown at them in that particular day. Choosing chronically homeless individuals was important for
me to discuss because again, homelessnesscan effect absolutely anyone. Homelessness does not
discriminate again who it touches and becomes simple to neglect this population because they
stereotypically are viewed as less of people due to their lack of contribution

Data/information is always a most important asset for any organization whose security cannot be
compromised. With the advances in technology, the risk to these valuable assets increases. So
their security is a big challenge. In [8] different database security layers are defined shown in
figure (2) below. These layers are: database administrator, system administrator, security officer,
developers and employee. For each layer some well defined security policies have been anticipated.
These policies ensure the security features, privacy, confidentiality and integrity.
This study mainly focuses on issues in databases security and measures taken to solve those issues.
Securing sensitive data from illegal access, theft and forging becomes a big challenge for different
organizations, like government, no government and privates sectors. Encryption of data in client or
server side where data is shared between different parties is not sufficient.
Basically the problem is to ensure that semi trusted database is secure or not. [6]

Further, performance measures should be explicitly linked via a strategy map of hypothesized cause
and effect relationships that depict the firm s strategy (Kaplan and Norton 2000; 2004).
Improvements in measures of organizational capabilities are expected to drive improvements in the
execution of internal processes which in turn lead to customer and financial outcomes. In this way,
the balanced scorecard framework explicitly recognizes interrelationships between strategy specific
measures of financial and customer outcomes and inputoriented performance drivers related to the
firm s internal processes and organizational capabilities. However, managers must formulate
strategies, and select related objectives and measures, based on exante expectations about how the
strategy will translate into financial performance. Thus, the strategic objectives and performance
measures chosen for an organization s scorecard are often based on uncertain hypotheses about how
measured performance against these objectives ultimately leads to financial performance.
Proponents of the balanced scorecard concept have long recognized this uncertainty. To mitigate
against it, and as a mechanism for strategic feedback and learning, they have

The Working Memory Model
The working memory model was proposed by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974 as an alternative to
Atkinson Shiffrin s multi store model of memory. They argued that the short term memory was not
a passive, temporary store used to transfer information to the long term memory. Instead, they
suggested that it should instead be regarded as an active store which holds information as it is
being worked on. It is described by Cohen (1990) as the focus of consciousness , holding the
information that is being thought about currently. The model has four components: the central
executive, the phonological loop, the visuo spatial sketchpad, and the episodic buffer.
The central executive is the key, supervisory component of working memory, directing the
subsidiary systems. It decides which incoming information will be allocated attention, as well as
coordinating the activity needed to carry out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, it is relevant to both traditional STM tasks and activities such as verbal reasoning,
comprehension, and mental arithmetic.
An advantage of the working memory model is that it explains certain neurological results in a way
that the multi store model cannot. For example, Patient KF (Warrington Shallice, 1974) had verbal
difficulties, however his short term memory for visual information and meaningful sounds (such as
a phone ringing) were unaffected. The model explains these results. An impaired phonological loop
can account for the verbal impairment, and the fact that his memory for visual information works
well can be explained by an intact visuo spatial sketchpad.
A disadvantage of the working memory model is that, although it is a major improvement on the
multi store model, it is oversimplified. There are several other types of information that are
processed and briefly stored, however the model does not represent

The Importance of Men and Women Spies in the American Civil War
The American Civil War started because the North and the South disagreed on the main issue of
slavery and lasted for four years. They could not agree whether to prohibit slavery in territories that
had not become states yet. After the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, the Southern states had a
major conflict with Lincoln becoming president and seven slave states succeeded from the Union
and made the Confederate States of America. The Union refused to recognize the southern states in
that way. Lincoln declared these acts to be illegal and asked Congress for 500,000 soldiers to

Woman were easily trusted and were looked at as non threatening. Men dominated the Civil War.
Women were not as praised as men to fight the war and because of that it helped women become
undetected as spies. Men would go to dinner parties at women s houses and the women would
secretly gather information and hid it in their hoop skirts. When giving messages to their side,
some spies would code them or write in invisible ink, using letters and numbers. The messages
usually contained enemy plans and movements, their supplies, troop size, and where their forts
were. Messages and contraband were usually hid in their clothing or large metal buttons. Medical
supplies were one of the most important things to smuggle over enemy lines. The Confederate
hospitals were in dire need of supplies. Emeline Pigott was a Confederate spy from North
Carolina who gathered military information by entertaining Union officials at dinner parties in her
own home. She hid critical papers and smuggled, ammunition and medicine in the crease of her

Analysis Of Meteoric Price Surge On The Stock Of A Company...
The two stories talk about the meteoric price surge in the stock of a company called Cynk
Technology Corporation, with no actual revenue and tangible assets, and the purported
manipulation of the stock price through a pump and dump strategy. It can be seen how the
Securities and Exchange commission together with the Department of Justice unsealed an
indictment charging several people with conspiracy, tax fraud and money laundering involving up
to $500 million in assets channeled through offshore shell companies that allowed clients to
influence stockprices and hide their profits. Generally the scam artists, gain control of an
enterprise and offer to sell a block of shares usually to the unsuspecting public with promises of
very high returns. Promoters broadcast the company s prospects by telling financiers to get in
early before the rest of the market dives in the pump. Shares are often bought and sold between
nominees to give the appearance of active trading, further amplifying interest as brokers contact
clients to buy stock. Once the price starts rising, the control block can be dumped on the market,
leaving investors with shares in a nearly worthless business.. It also parleys the increase of penny
stockfraud and the Securities and Exchange Commission s inability to prosecute the fraudsters and
protect investors.
A Penny Stock, according to the U.S Securities and Exchange Commission, generally refers to low
priced securities of very small companies, usually below

Brief Beginning Statement. From Any Walk Of Life, An Eagle
Brief Beginning Statement
From any walk of life, an Eagle Scout will say what made them an Eagle was not the award, but
the challenges they went through to obtain that rank. As I begin to come closer and closer to the
finish line, I am beginning to realize that scouting has instilled upon me life lessons that I will never
overlook. Scouting has revealed to me that under no circumstances will I be the best at anything if
I do not persist and overcome. Also, it has bestowed upon me valuable lessons of morals and life
teachings that is the backbone to creating functional members of any society. Consequently, the
lessons I gained in the Scouting program will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Purpose of Life Statement

The Boy Scouting program from the start was all orientated towards being self reliant. A learning
curve was given to almost all the new boys when joining the troop. In other words, no longer
would the adults be responsible for packing our gear, buying our patrol s food, communicating
with other members, contacting merit badge counselors, or making sure we had all of our
requirements. A whole slew of responsibility and accountability was placed upon a young boy
who had no previous experience whatsoever. What made the Boy Scout program a little bit
daunting at first was that it, in essence, pushed boys into a pool of new duties. These challenges
from the outset allowed me to become more focused, more organized and more self reliant.
Harsh moments such as forgetting a portion of my patrol s meal, had forced me to become more
structured. The little subtleties such as forgetting to get a requirement signed and having to do it
all over again showed many boys that they are going to have to be independent. What made the
Scouting program unique to me is that it required boys, such as myself, to become more
independent and look towards solutions. While in my younger and maybe more exposed years, I
had to become accustomed to being an advocate for my own success. I can definitely say that
many kids at my grade did not grow up with the same mindset as I did.

Strategic Alternatives: Alternative 1 Optimise Social Media Strategy and introduce Online Store on
www.decathlon.com.ch Pros: In order to create positive brand experience, become the leader in the
Chinese sporting goods market and develop customer trust, powerful social media strategy was
needed to help the brand to increase its presence online through optimised social media channels
like Renren, Kaixin001 and 8264.com to create online community, promote its products and
compete powerfully with its rivalries. Chinese consumers of sporting goods are very socially active
online. They like to purchase products while consulting with others. Social media outlets are perfect
to create positive buzz around the brand and strengthen the it s reputation online as well as
introduce the customer to purchasing the product on line through www.decathlon.com.ch by
creating the same look and feel as in retail store. Taobao, being the biggest retailer in China, has
high consumer stickiness due to its bargain prices, stellar customer service, high level of trust
among consumers, is uniquely positioned to optimise sales of Decathlon products online. Cons:
Managing multiple social media outlets in a timely manner can be costly and time consuming.
Decathlon must be prepared to adopt always on strategy when interacting with customers, which
must start with internal preparedness in eCommerce and IT departments. Alternative 2 Focus on

Life of Prophet Jeremiah
Life and times Jeremiah was born and grew up in the village of Anathoth, a few miles northeast
of Jerusalem, in a priestly family. In his childhood he must have learned some of the traditions
of his people, particularly the prophecies of Hosea, whose influence can be seen in his early
messages. The era in which Jeremiah lived was one of transition for the ancient Near East. The
Assyrian empire, which had been dominant for two centuries, declined and fell. Its capital,
Nineveh, was captured in 612 by the Babylonians and Medes. Egypt had a brief period of
resurgence under the 26th dynasty (664 525) but did not prove strong enough to establish an
empire. The new world power was the Neo Babylonian empire, ruled by a Chaldean dynasty whose

In the opinion of such scholars, Jeremiah began to prophesy toward the end of the reign of
Josiah or at the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim (609 598). Early in the reign of Jehoiakim,
Jeremiah delivered his famous Temple sermon, of which there are two versions, one in
Jeremiah, chapter 7, verses 1 to 15, the other in chapter 26, verses 1 to 24. He denounced the
people for their dependence on the Temple for security and called on them to effect genuine
ethical reform. He predicted that God would destroy the Temple of Jerusalem, as he had earlier
destroyed that of Shiloh, if they continued in their present path. Jeremiah was immediately arrested
and tried on a capital charge. He was acquitted but may have been forbidden to preach again in the
Temple. The reign of Jehoiakim was an active and difficult period in Jeremiah s life. That king was
very different from his father, the reforming Josiah, whom Jeremiah commended for doing justice
and righteousness. Jeremiah denounced Jehoiakim harshly for his selfishness, materialism, and
practice of social injustice. Near the time of the Battle of Carchemish, in 605, when the
Babylonians decisively defeated the Egyptians and the remnant of the Assyrians, Jeremiah
delivered an oracle against Egypt. Realizing that this battle made a great difference in the world
situation, Jeremiah soon dictated to his scribe, Baruch, a scroll containing all of the messages he

Think of this in general as X/Y. So, the money market formula is, in general, (X interest rate Y
interest rate) / (1. + Y interest rate) or, in shorthand, (X Y) /(1 + Y) So if you were using a yen
/dollar quote for the exchange rate, you would have yen rate minus dollar rate divided by one
plus dollar rate. Note that none of this really solves Dozier s problem; but there is a theory that
in well functioning markets, the results from the two formulas should be equal. In other words,
it shouldn t make a difference whether you hedge in the forward market or in the money market.
However this theory is based on comparing apples to apples. Here the apples are the financial
instruments whose interest rates we are comparing. Our interest rate calculation is based on the
cost of a UK bank loan to Dozier compared to rate on a bank CD. The theory works a bit better if
you use the Eurodollar rate and the Europound rate in Exhibit 4, but even these are not precisely
similar instruments. However, there is another use for the formulas. Banks use them in pricing
forward contracts! Suppose that we set the two formulas equal to each other and do some
rearrangements using my X/Y approach to stay general and to remind us what we are doing. We
can get the following result, solving for the forward rate: Forward rate = Spot rate x (1 + X interest
rate) / (1 + Y interest rate) Remember the rule is X over Y. When

The music s solid rhythm and heavy back beat inspired new forms of dancing that exist today. Far
beyond simply a musical style, rock and roll influenced lifestyles, fashion, attitudes and language.
So the big question is what makes the Grease phenomenon continue? One thing that has made it
go down in history is the music behind it. Some songs were added to film version that were not
in the stage version to reflect the feel of the 50 s in songs suited to the disco era. You re the One
That I Want , Grease , and Hopelessly Devoted to You were all composed for the 1978 film. The
music has captivated a variety of generations for so many years. Today the music plays at
dances, karaoke bars and on the radios across the country, and winds up in almost everyone s

impossible for me not to sing or hum along, and I know I m not alone. The young kids, especially
those five to twelve years old have heard about Grease from their older siblings, have made it their

Another reason youth enjoy Grease is it deals with events and issues encountered in high school. In

publics about the harmful health impacts of fast food consumption is a threat to Taco Bell s fast
food menus. The ingredients such as sugar, oil and salt which are in the fast foods being offered,
are thus consumed in low proportions by the aware and educated consumers (Taco Bell,2010).
MARKETING SEGMENTATION In Malaysia, Taco Bell should cater to a well defined target
market in order to market their product successfully. The major bases for segmentation are
geographic, demographic, psychographic and behavioral. The geographic positioning of any
business is important in the success of a business. In Malaysia, Taco bell should be located in the
heart of urban areas such at Kuala Lumpur or Georgetown where the population density is at its
highest. Climate aspect of the location would not be an issue as the weather throughout Malaysia
is considerably fine. In demographic segmentation, Taco Bell as a fast food outlet should target
mainly to teenagers and small kids as they are the ones who are either

Heart Is A Lonely Hunter Essay
The battle between an individual and their inner self is widely depicted throughout different
genres and distinct times in history. In The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter, a novel written by Carson
McCullers, the battle proves to be a major issue which multiple characters deal with. The main
character, a deaf mute named John Singer, comes into a town where the story takes place and ends
up becoming a counselor like figure who the residentsconfided in frequently, but all of the residents
decided to reveal parts of their lives separately. An underlying theme is that despite Singer helping
those around him dealing with their problems, he never discloses the fact that he is also dealing
with his own issues, meaning that he projects a different person to others than... Show more content

This begins to take a toll on Singer, and after visiting the town where he and Anastopoulos lived,
Singer thought of Anastopoulos stuck in the asylum, but despite trying to remember of the room
that Anastopoulos was in tonight, that room would not become clear in his mind. The emptiness
was very deep inside of him (McCullers 208) The diction in this quote indicates how by coming
back to the town where he and Anastopoulos lived, and by reliving their memories there, it
intensifies Singer s battle with his inner self. Words such as The emptiness was very deep inside
of him reveal how Singer has been affected negatively by coming back to his old town. McCullers
references that the emptiness is deep inside of him to convey that his inner self realizes that
Anastopoulos has done more harm than good, but Singer refuses to accept it and continues to fight
his inner self. After the fight between Singer and his inner self worsens, he decides to return back
to the town so he can further help the residents, and further conform to social expectations by trying
his best to think about and focus on the issues that the townspeople are

The Untold Story of Americas Largest Slave Revolt , published in 2012, in Harper Collins

attempt the largest revolt in U.S. history. Fighting for justice and a chance of freedom. But the
other side attempts to prevent to clear what happened from history and to prevent any other slave
retaliations. Rasmussen s history can be broken down easily for the readers attention. From the
beginning, first explaining of New Orleans being on point with its commercial farming zones and
the upper hand in the Atlantic slave trade. The untold stories on how and where these conspiracies
began to spark an uprising. Second, the battling for death or for freedom, the slave did know this,

army was built to clear its own path in history. Third, how French planters intended to clear up the
history of the revolt so that it would not have enough breathing room to spark another uprising in
the future. In the eighteenth Century, Slave owners expanded their hold on the North American
Continent, churning through new land and bringing slaves from the older states to the newer,
through a vast new domestic slave trade, (Rasmussen, 2015 pg. 186) which would become the

The Battle of Algiers and The Algerian Insurgency Essay
French Algeria is now called Algeria and won its independence from its colonial power, France.
The two political communities in French Algeria were the French citizens and the Algerian people.
The Algerian people were under French rule for over one hundred years from 1830 to 1962 when
they were given their independence and recognized by France. The events of November 1, 1954,
marked the birth of the National Liberation Front (FLN) (Cherian). The Muslim population is the
part of the population that felt isolated and they wanted more political autonomy. The Muslim
population formed a secessionist insurgencybecause they wanted to break away from the ruling
party to create their own country or nation away from French occupation and control.... Show more

This was their targets for the start of the insurgency on November 1st.They would walk up shoot
the policeman in the head or shoot him in the chest and double tap in the head to insure that the
officer was killed. The FLN had to change tactics when the French military became involved
especially when they were on strike to gain UN approval for an Algerian nation free from France
but the French Army forced them to their jobs and work. They instituted a curfew and checkpoints
between the two parts of Algeria where the French citizen were and the Algerian people were
housed. They then instituted bombs after their homes were bombed and burned killing their family
members and children. The FLN then built purse bombs to attack the French civilians at local
areas such as a restaurant, airport, and dance club. They also started to attack the military when
threatened and hid weapons in the French occupied territory to attack the policemen. The French
civilians were also tired of friends and family getting killed so they started to attack Algerian
children whenever they saw them. The French citizens almost killed a young boy by trampling and
kicking him when he was on the ground until the police pulled the child to safety.
The Algerian insurgency used the strategy that Mao developed and perfected but every nation or
country has to tailor their strategy based on the cultural and ethnic traditions and background. The

Mexican American Males and Alcoholism

Mexican American Males and Alcoholism Drinking alcohol is a behavior that diverse ethnicities
and cultures have adapted as a form of leisure, celebration, socialization, or cultural practice.
Mexican American males have engaged in drinking alcohol for all of these reasons. It is important to
analyze the process of acculturation Mexican American experience and how it affects their ability
to persuade and control their alcohol consumption. The stress of adjusting to a new place than the
one they have been accustomed to and have already been accepted in, can lead males to drink
alcohol to help them in coping with their issues. The gravity of extreme alcohol drinking is also ...

Lastly, access to alcohol in Mexico is not a difficult obstacle to overcome. Therefore, males who
migrated to the U.S. have already been heavily exposed to alcohol. These points are not to prove
that alcoholism among Mexican American men is caused entirely by the exposure of Mexico s
customs, but to outline the different reasons why a male might fall in alcoholism. A male who
migrates to the U.S. or a Mexican American male that has lived most or his entire life in the U.S.
as mentioned before, might engage in excessive drinking because of the pressures of acculturation.
Dealing with the stress of leaving behind natal customs to adapt new values and behaviors can
result heavy alcohol consumption. Even though the Mexican culture has already shaped the
behavior of drinking in males, it is still different from the American drinking behaviors. Mexican
men drink less frequently, but more heavily, while Americans drink more frequently, but not so
heavily (Gilbert and Cervantes 1987). Clearly a combination of both as a form of dealing with
stress can be catastrophic. During the acculturation process the greatest amount of stress can be felt
when the feeling of loneliness starts to settle in. When a male feels he is distanced from his
Mexican culture and life style, but not accepted by the new dominant culture he has been trying to
adapt, he is more susceptive to alcoholism (Zimmerman and Roysircar

Marcom Tactics for Gatorade G2
INTRODUCTION
The US sports drinks market is highly competitive. It accounts for the highest worldwide sports
drink consumption. A sports drink is a deviation of an energy drink which aims at rehydration,
sports performance and muscle recovery. The major players in this US market are Gatorade by
PepsiCo amp; PowerAde by Coca Cola.
Gatorade
Gatorade is accepted as the market leader of US sports drink market with nearly 75% market share
as at 2008 (Sports Business Daily, 23 July 2009). The study analyses the marketing mix of Gatorade
in US market with special concentration on its Marketing Communications. It was introduced in

* Advertising
The advertising activities of G2 are two fold, online and offline. The objective of their advertising
strategy is to increase awareness of benefits of G2 and reinforce that idea with an aim of
differentiating the products and persuading customers towards purchase.
Offline advertising
Gatorade used Float commercials, which features sportsmen and women such as NBA s Dwayne
Wade and gymnast Chellsie Memmel. The advertising repeats Mohammed Ali s Quote Float like a
butterfly and sting like a bee which supports the brand slogan in a way that floating portrays
lightness in calories and sting like a bee portrays the ability to accurately hit performance targets.
By employing high repetitions of advertisements during sports events such as Super bowl, the most
watched event in US TV, they ensure high exposure to their brand thereby increasing awareness
amp; recall of G2.
Their print advertisements such as Gatorade Double Life mainly focus on sports magazines such as
Sports Illustrated, Bounce and Dime as they carry a synergy with their target audience of Athletes,
professional or non professional.
The TV advertising benefits for G2 in terms of Clout against cost as it reaches a large number of
people which reduces cost per head. But it can also be argued that clout is low with both mediums
as they cannot be personalized. However, there is

Why Ducks In Cowville Was A Flop
Why Ducks in Cowville Was a Flop Our class play, Ducks in Cowville, was a flop. The acting
was terrible, the costumes appeared dreadful, and all the bad news about our play got out fast. It
was not just one person s fault though. We all contributed to the disaster. The terrible acting was
the main reason Ducks in Cowville was horrible. Luckily, Ben, Jill, Chris, and Feliz, the actors
who played the cows, remembered most of their lines. On the other hand, the actors who played
the ducks only had one rehearsal, so they barely remembered any of their lines! In addition, no
one could hear Enrico s solo, Oh Lonely Duck. I know it made up part of the show, but it might
have been a good thing no one could hear him. He ruined the whole song.

Medical Malpractice Claims
I ve chosen the topic of medical malpractice for this essay. I chose this topic because it is a topic
that I think someone could disagree with and argue, so therefore it s also one that I can help
persuade someone into thinking I m right about. My question is has medical malpractice affected
the level/ delivery of health care does it scaring future physicians away? This topic is important
because it impacts everyone whether they are seeking medical attention or the person providing it.
It also affects the cost of health care and people s access to it. I believe that medical malpractice

He focuses on physician workforce, physician income and patients access to care. Weinberg
discusses the affect medical malpractice is having on people in certain aspects of the medical field
and also how it is affecting those who are seeking medical attention. One of the main topics that
Weinberg talks about is how medical malpractice affects physicians and if it cause them to use

  • 2. Social Control In Metropolis A great deal of fictional films and literature deal with the concept of society. Writers have played around with the idea of societies that are different from the world we know. While some portray this in optimistic ways and others darker, what these works have in common is the idea of social control wherein people are forced to conform to means that are believed to benefit their society. Fritz Langs 1927 silent film, Metropolisis an early example of this. The beginning shows machine gears and workers marching towards a factory. This place is known as the Workers City, described to be far below Metropolis, the city for the upper class founded by Joh Fredersen (Alfred Abel). The lives of the workers and the rich are very different,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of all, the set design was intricate and very detailed, especially in the factories where there were gears and machines operating everywhere. Every inch brought the setting to life. There was a clear distinction when switching from Metropolis to the Workers City that was seen in the scene s setting. Moreover, the settings were given more depth by the frames and angles in which they were shot. Many scenes would show the main subject or image centered in the frame, and this was given emphasis with the use of dark shadows in contrary to a bright subject. Shadows indeed played a big part in creating visuals. The technique of chiaroscuro, the contrast between light and dark comes to mind, like in scenes that were more somber and serious (e.g. carrying the dead bodies from the factory, Maria making prophecies about peace). In connection with the concept of angles, Fritz Lang also had a commendable use of symmetry, which was visually appealing especially with intricately designed sets. Lang also used lines in his shots, adding style and flair to dramatic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Names like Noah, Jacob, David, and Miriam, are names currently in the top 1000 child names in the world, and they are all biblical names. Both women sacrificed something valuable, Reba her diamond ring and Rebecca her family relationships, so that their children would be happy. The role of Reba in Song of Solomon is that of a motherly figure, always putting her children first and not worrying about her own needs. This description aligns well with biblical Rebecca, who sacrifices her relationship with part of her family in order to please her son, Jacob. Reba is a kinder and more selfless version of the Bible s version of Rebecca. Reba s aunt, Ruth Foster, has a name that is also associated with a character in the Bible, also named Ruth. In the Bible, after her husband died, Ruth faithfully stays with her mother in law, refusing to leave. One of Ruth s most notable quotes from the Bible is as follows: Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; Where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die there will I be buried. May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you! (Ruth 1:16 17). In this quote, the reader can see that Ruth is willing to stay by her mother in law s side no matter what, even claiming that she would even die with her. Naomi, her mother in law, is a constant reminder of Ruth s husband, and she refuses to leave her because Naomi is the only reminder she has of her late husband. In Song of Solomon, after ... • 4. How Did The Federalist Papers Influence The Ratification... Section A: Identification and Evaluation of Sources This investigation will explore the question: To what extent did The Federalist Papers influence the ratification of the Constitution? The publications, arguments, and effects of this document will be the focus of the investigation to allow for an analysis of where and in what ways The Federalist was influential during the constitutional conventions from 1787 to 1789. The first source that will be evaluated in depth is Ron Chernow s book Alexander Hamilton which was published in 2005. The origin of this source is valuable because Chernow is a historian and writer who graduated from Yale university, Pembroke College, and Cambridge. He has won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography and the American History Book Prize and has written many books about the founding fathers and early republic, indicating his extensive knowledge on the subject. The purpose of Alexander Hamilton is to tell the story of the first secretary of the treasury and his influence on the new nation from his birth in 1755 to his death in 1804. This is valuable, because as the author of more than half of The Federalist, extensive knowledge on Hamilton s political pursuits and views is helpful in creating an informed conclusion. However, since the main focus of the novel is Hamilton, the role of Madison and Jay may have been downsized or less researched. Also, the focus of the book was not the Constitutional convention and impact of the federalist papers, so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rarely can a book alter your view so entirely about the world you live in, just by giving you more information about what exactly your world is made up of. The book Good Germs, Bad Germs did this for me. Each chapter strategically broke down the history of microbes and bacteriaand how they have been perceived (or not perceived) throughout history. Each expanding step lists the theories that were building blocks for the future of the study of microbes. From Nurse Nightingale, Colonel George Waring, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek and Bonnie Bassler there were medical advances that helped the field of medicine greatly. Even groups who did not believe in the germs made large steps to clean up the population. Each person mentioned in the book had some sort of contribution to the start of fighting against bacteria and viruses, with Nurse Nightingale disinfecting the work area, Waring started cleaning up the streets and created the way to keep sewage separate from the drinking water and Leeuwenhoek who identified bacteria in the first place. This entire book gives as much information as possible without the reader needing a medical degree. The Uplifting Tale of Today Will Be a Quiet Day Some readers see death, but when I read the story Today Will Be a Quiet Day by Amy Hempel, I find it to be a light hearted, first hand account of people coping with transition. Even its location in the table of contents under the heading Childhood and Adolescent (Barnet), implies that the story is not about death at all. A newly defined family, one man, a boy and a girl, is faced with the aftermath of divorce and explore among themselves the intricacies of life. The story gives us sublime but keen insight into the transition and adjustments these three people make in this story. There are many inferences to what it is like stepping into the life of a parent you don t live with but once or twice a month. This new family is only new in the sense of the father s having questions and doubts. Whether he doubts his ability to read his children or has been absent too long is not indicated, but clearly this family seems to be redefining their old relationship. The children handle it a bit differently by speaking of topics that are old news (such as the boy s friend s suicide), telling jokes, and in the case of the older sister, showing independence and maturity in deciding to drive her brother and father home. Sylvan Barnet comments that the father may be feeling that he may not know his children (1206). As the story progresses the father gets his answers as many parents would in real life. The father is an active listener and interrupts, defends or morbidly participates in the fun of his children s conversation. At times he is reminded of how well he knows his children when he again looses his appetite watching them eat fast. And once more when he quips, Who would adopt you? This means that he is stuck with these wonderful children and they are stuck with him. One of the more poignant moments in the story is when the daughter comes to realize her gullibility in believing the family dog had escaped death to live a long happy life on a farm (Barnet 1205). How is the history of European and Arabic cultural contact reveal through musical characteristics in places such as Spain and Bulgaria? In Spain, the authentic flamenco had just a singer. It had a strained type of timbre and melisma was used a lot. It shows that there was Arabic influence because they also had that type of style. And because they also used a guitar as accompaniment, it showed there was European influence because they liked harmony. Bulgarian music also had harmonies but with voices. According to R.W. The influence that power grants is one that allows a person to take control of their life, and because of this, obtaining and holding powerhas been a basic desire of all humans since the beginning of civilization. Power and its influence are clear components of the novel The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe . Some examples of these powers are the power of lust, the power of the people, the power of the law, and the power of the media. Out of these powers, the power of the media is easily the most influential power in The Bonfire of the Vanities because of its ability to influence people s decisions, which is especially evident in Sherman McCoy s trial, its ability to influence the opinions of large masses of people, and its ability to expose something to a much bigger audience. The media s ability to influence decisions is the most obvious and influential power that it holds. • 21. Analysis Of Judith Slaying Holofernes Judith Slaying Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi ultimately painted one of the most violent representations of Judith in the history of art (Straussman Pflanzer, 12). Gentileschi was the only woman painter of the Baroque period in her time. She was born in Rome in 1593 to Orazio Gentileschi and Prudenzia Montoni. Artemisia was a follower of Caravaggio, whom art is frequently considered primarily in terms of its naturalism (Straussman Pflanzer, 13). She also learned the principles of art from her father and the basic perspective from Tassi. In Judith Slaying Holofernes the woman represented in a yellow costly garment is no other than Judith a Jewish widow. Despite her beauty for deceiving men, she is very brutal in revenge. By easily gaining her way through the Assyrians she gracefully grabs the attention of the General Holofernes, and then kills him by slicing through his neck with his own sword. She is then the heroine figure for Bethulia, Jerusalem, the Temple, and the people (Judith 8:11 12). The story of Judith is told to be a young religious widow from the Jewish city of Bethulia, chops off the head of Holofernes, general of the Assyrian army that had attacked her city. Robin Gallaher Branch states that Judith told the Bethulia leaders to meet her at her home where she could discuss to them her plan on how to save the city from thirst by the enemy (Branch, 1). Further, performance measures should be explicitly linked via a strategy map of hypothesized cause and effect relationships that depict the firm s strategy (Kaplan and Norton 2000; 2004). Improvements in measures of organizational capabilities are expected to drive improvements in the execution of internal processes which in turn lead to customer and financial outcomes. In this way, the balanced scorecard framework explicitly recognizes interrelationships between strategy specific measures of financial and customer outcomes and inputoriented performance drivers related to the firm s internal processes and organizational capabilities. However, managers must formulate strategies, and select related objectives and measures, based on exante expectations about how the strategy will translate into financial performance. Thus, the strategic objectives and performance measures chosen for an organization s scorecard are often based on uncertain hypotheses about how measured performance against these objectives ultimately leads to financial performance. • 27. The Working Memory Model The working memory model was proposed by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974 as an alternative to Atkinson Shiffrin s multi store model of memory. They argued that the short term memory was not a passive, temporary store used to transfer information to the long term memory. Instead, they suggested that it should instead be regarded as an active store which holds information as it is being worked on. It is described by Cohen (1990) as the focus of consciousness , holding the information that is being thought about currently. The model has four components: the central executive, the phonological loop, the visuo spatial sketchpad, and the episodic buffer. The central executive is the key, supervisory component of working memory, directing the subsidiary systems. Therefore, it is relevant to both traditional STM tasks and activities such as verbal reasoning, comprehension, and mental arithmetic. An advantage of the working memory model is that it explains certain neurological results in a way that the multi store model cannot. For example, Patient KF (Warrington Shallice, 1974) had verbal difficulties, however his short term memory for visual information and meaningful sounds (such as a phone ringing) were unaffected. The model explains these results. An impaired phonological loop can account for the verbal impairment, and the fact that his memory for visual information works well can be explained by an intact visuo spatial sketchpad. A disadvantage of the working memory model is that, although it is a major improvement on the multi store model, it is oversimplified. After the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, the Southern states had a major conflict with Lincoln becoming president and seven slave states succeeded from the Union and made the Confederate States of America. The Boy Scouting program from the start was all orientated towards being self reliant. A learning curve was given to almost all the new boys when joining the troop. In other words, no longer would the adults be responsible for packing our gear, buying our patrol s food, communicating with other members, contacting merit badge counselors, or making sure we had all of our requirements. A whole slew of responsibility and accountability was placed upon a young boy who had no previous experience whatsoever. What made the Boy Scout program a little bit daunting at first was that it, in essence, pushed boys into a pool of new duties. These challenges from the outset allowed me to become more focused, more organized and more self reliant. Harsh moments such as forgetting a portion of my patrol s meal, had forced me to become more structured. The little subtleties such as forgetting to get a requirement signed and having to do it all over again showed many boys that they are going to have to be independent. What made the Scouting program unique to me is that it required boys, such as myself, to become more independent and look towards solutions. In his childhood he must have learned some of the traditions of his people, particularly the prophecies of Hosea, whose influence can be seen in his early messages. The era in which Jeremiah lived was one of transition for the ancient Near East. The Assyrian empire, which had been dominant for two centuries, declined and fell. Its capital, Nineveh, was captured in 612 by the Babylonians and Medes. Egypt had a brief period of resurgence under the 26th dynasty (664 525) but did not prove strong enough to establish an empire. In the opinion of such scholars, Jeremiah began to prophesy toward the end of the reign of Josiah or at the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim (609 598). Early in the reign of Jehoiakim, Jeremiah delivered his famous Temple sermon, of which there are two versions, one in Jeremiah, chapter 7, verses 1 to 15, the other in chapter 26, verses 1 to 24. He denounced the people for their dependence on the Temple for security and called on them to effect genuine ethical reform. He predicted that God would destroy the Temple of Jerusalem, as he had earlier destroyed that of Shiloh, if they continued in their present path. Jeremiah was immediately arrested and tried on a capital charge. He was acquitted but may have been forbidden to preach again in the Temple. The reign of Jehoiakim was an active and difficult period in Jeremiah s life. That king was very different from his father, the reforming Josiah, whom Jeremiah commended for doing justice and righteousness. Jeremiah denounced Jehoiakim harshly for his selfishness, materialism, and practice of social injustice. Near the time of the Battle of Carchemish, in 605, when the Babylonians decisively defeated the Egyptians and the remnant of the Assyrians, Jeremiah delivered an oracle against Egypt. Note that none of this really solves Dozier s problem; but there is a theory that in well functioning markets, the results from the two formulas should be equal. In other words, it shouldn t make a difference whether you hedge in the forward market or in the money market. However this theory is based on comparing apples to apples. They also started to attack the military when threatened and hid weapons in the French occupied territory to attack the policemen. The French civilians were also tired of friends and family getting killed so they started to attack Algerian children whenever they saw them. The French citizens almost killed a young boy by trampling and kicking him when he was on the ground until the police pulled the child to safety. Julia Curry MAS 160 9 a.m. 12 May 2009 Mexican American Males and Alcoholism Drinking alcohol is a behavior that diverse ethnicities and cultures have adapted as a form of leisure, celebration, socialization, or cultural practice. Mexican American males have engaged in drinking alcohol for all of these reasons. It is important to analyze the process of acculturation Mexican American experience and how it affects their ability to persuade and control their alcohol consumption. Therefore, males who migrated to the U.S. have already been heavily exposed to alcohol. These points are not to prove that alcoholism among Mexican American men is caused entirely by the exposure of Mexico s customs, but to outline the different reasons why a male might fall in alcoholism. A male who migrates to the U.S. or a Mexican American male that has lived most or his entire life in the U.S. as mentioned before, might engage in excessive drinking because of the pressures of acculturation. Dealing with the stress of leaving behind natal customs to adapt new values and behaviors can result heavy alcohol consumption. Even though the Mexican culture has already shaped the behavior of drinking in males, it is still different from the American drinking behaviors. Mexican men drink less frequently, but more heavily, while Americans drink more frequently, but not so heavily (Gilbert and Cervantes 1987). Clearly a combination of both as a form of dealing with stress can be catastrophic. During the acculturation process the greatest amount of stress can be felt when the feeling of loneliness starts to settle in. When a male feels he is distanced from his Mexican culture and life style, but not accepted by the new dominant culture he has been trying to adapt, he is more susceptive to alcoholism (Zimmerman and Roysircar ... • 48. Why Ducks In Cowville Was A Flop Why Ducks in Cowville Was a Flop Our class play, Ducks in Cowville, was a flop. The acting was terrible, the costumes appeared dreadful, and all the bad news about our play got out fast. It was not just one person s fault though. We all contributed to the disaster. The terrible acting was the main reason Ducks in Cowville was horrible. Luckily, Ben, Jill, Chris, and Feliz, the actors who played the cows, remembered most of their lines. On the other hand, the actors who played the ducks only had one rehearsal, so they barely remembered any of their lines! In addition, no one could hear Enrico s solo, Oh Lonely Duck. I know it made up part of the show, but it might have been a good thing no one could hear him. He ruined the whole song. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
