An 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of central Chile in February 2010. The earthquake caused a large tsunami with waves over 30 meters high that resulted in over 800 deaths. Significant infrastructure damage occurred including power outages and damage to the Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport. The earthquake was one of the most powerful in the world at the time and was followed by hundreds of aftershocks, including 16 over magnitude 6.0.
