The Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System was established in 2005 after the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that killed over 280,000 people. The system includes 5 regional tsunami warning centers located in high-risk countries around the Indian Ocean and over 80 seismic monitors worldwide that send data to the centers. The goal of the system is to detect earthquakes, forecast potential tsunamis, and provide alerts to protect human life.
