Sustainable development aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It involves using natural resources reasonably, avoiding irreversible damage to ecosystems, and ensuring technological progress does not harm life on Earth. The concept originated from concerns in the 1980s about overuse of resources harming the environment, health, and development opportunities. It focuses on conservation, social equality, and global economic growth. In the UK, four key areas for sustainable development are climate change/energy, natural resources, sustainable communities, and sustainable consumption/production.
