The photograph shows an oblique aerial view of an area with various human and physical features. Farmland can be seen divided into irregular fields separated by hedgerows. Settlements include a nucleated village near a river valley and dispersed farmsteads, along with roads and woodland areas.
Utilizing low-cost unmanned vehicle (UAV) to build orthophotos and Digital Su...Britta Ricker, Ph.D.
Presentation given to the Washington Water Science Center USGS Tacoma on December 16, 2015. Here I describe the potential for UAV usage to improve maps for citizen science!
I will introduce methods of aerial imagery collection through the use of a low-cost and popular UAV systems. I will then focus on how to process the imagery to generate orthophotos and digital surface models (DSM) through the use of SfM software. I present decision considerations from beginning to end of a UAV mapping project.

9. What is happening here?
What are the aims?
How is this an example of a
sustainable strategy?
10. What are these people doing?
How is this an example of sustainable development?
11. What is happening here?
What are the impacts? How could they be managed?
12. Interpreting photographs
Learning objective: to
understand and interpret
different types of photographs
13. Types of photographs
• Aerial photograph – taken directly
from above (vertical)
• Oblique photograph – taken from an
angle from above
Aerial photographs
show a ‘bird’s eye Oblique
view’ while oblique aerial
photographs show a
3d view.
14. Types of photographs
• Satellite photograph– taken from space.
• Can show a large area (e.g. the whole
Earth)
• They can also zoom in to street level.
21. Interpreting physical features
from photographs
Relief (the shape of the land):
• Is the land sloping or flat?
• If slopes, are they steep or gentle?
• Are there hills / mountains / valleys? What size / shape are they?
River / coastal features:
• Is there a river?
• Is it long / wide / short / narrow?
• Is there a lake?
• Are there rivers flowing into the lake?
• What is the coastline like?
• Is it straight or are there bays and headlands?
• Are there beaches? How long / wide are they?
• Are there islands in the rivers / sea? Describe their size and shape
22. Interpreting human features
from photographs
Farmland
• Are the fields large / small?
• Regular or irregular pattern?
• What colour is the land? What does this suggest about what is being
grown?
• How are the fields separated – hedges, roads, rivers?
Settlement
• Small settlement – what is the shape? (Nucleated, linear, dispersed)
• Housing developments – what pattern is the housing (grid, cul-de-sac
etc)? How large / small are the houses? Do they have gardens /
garages?
• Can you identify shops, schools, places of worship, tourist facilities?
Transport & communications
• What roads are there (motorways, A roads, small rural roads)?
• What transport links can be identified? (airports, railways, ports)
23. Task
• Look at the oblique aerial photograph
on p11 of your Skills Book.
• Describe the physical and human
features which can be seen.
24. What is the pattern of land use
in this photograph?
25. What are the human features
R,S,T in this photograph?
