What are the effects of tourism in National Parks in HICs?
Case Study: Malham in the Yorkshire Dales NP

Due: 2nd Nov
What’s for starters … ?
How can we solve the problems caused by tourism?
Match the heads with the tails.

Off peak tourism Tourism in the future achieves a balance
1 between the needs of tourists and the needs 3
of the environment and the local people.

Agrotourism This was a strategy that was introduced into
Mallorca to solve the problems caused by
2 tourism. It’s underlying aim was sustainable 4
                            development.

Sustainable tourism This involves ensuring that there is an even
3 spread of tourists throughout the year. 1

Local Agenda 21 This is when tourists stay on a working farm.
They get the chance to enjoy Spanish culture 2
4 and the farmers gain an income from
                            tourism.
What is today’s lesson objective?
         To understand the principles of
          Eco-Tourism

Students note in planners
How will I achieve today’s
        lesson objective?
  You must:
• Be able to define Eco-Tourism
  You should:
• Be able to work in pairs to design &
  annotate an Eco-Tourist resort in

What is sustainable tourism?
Sustainable tourism aims to balance the need for local
businesses to make a profit whilst making sure it doesn’t
cause environmental degradation (ruin beyond repair)

Large scale: Sustainable tourism Small scale:
Mass tourism Eco-tourism

Economy Environment

If sustainable tourism is achieved, this could ensure the
long-term survival of the resort. However, Eco-Tourism
suggests this can only be achieved by making the
conservation of the environment the main priority.

What is Eco-tourism?
               Key term:
               According to the International EcoTourism
               Society:
‘Ecotourism is responsible travel to natural areas
that conserves the environment and improves
               the well-being of local people’.
