Integrating Natural
and
Built Environment
for
Sustainable Development
Sandeep Kumar
Importance of the Topic
 Sustainability is an extremely important direction, and
our future depends on it as we have only one earth to
live on which is under threat because of haphazard
development all over world.
 There are three major issues related with modern
living:
 Depletion of fossil fuels.
 Climate change due to CO2 emissions.
 Reducing availability and increasing cost of Water and
Energy.
Lessons from the past
 For a civilization to survive its natural resources
should be rationed in a way they are not depleted
but exploited to a level that is sufficient for
development of human needs.
 There are a number of instances in history where a
civilization collapsed because it seriously affected
its own chances of survival by damaging its own
environment.
Indus valley civilization
Historical reasons of collapse
of past societies:
 Deforestation and habitat destruction
 Soil problems (erosion, salinization, and soil fertility
losses)
 Water management problems
 Overhunting
 Overfishing
 Effects of introduced species on native species
 Overpopulation
 Increased per-capita impact of people
Source: Jared Diamond - Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed
factors that may contribute to the
weakening and collapse of present
and future societies:
 Anthropogenic climate change
 Buildup of toxins in the environment
 Energy shortages
 Full human use of the Earth’s
photosynthetic capacity

Ecosystem in Cities
Why cities need to integrate
built environment with nature
 As the high rise high density development engulfs a
city’s built environment, a number of issues start rising
up.for example: Heat island effect.
Heat Island Effect in a city
How sustainable development
can overcome these issues
 The growth and development of our communities has a
large impact on our natural environment, in which we
live and work so we are responsible for the consumption
of many of our natural resources.
 The integrating of nature and environment is often
interpreted as development with a lot of green cover in
todays economic world, Actually our consumption habits
have to be manipulated in order to achieve this goal.
 We can achieve all the benefits of sustainable
development by minimizing resource consumption in all
stages of any major or minor development being carried
out.
How sustainable development
can overcome these issues
 Integration of civil and ecological engineering (example
roads in the landscape, green roofs and green façades)
 Based on Ecosystem Thinking (inspiration: H.T.Odum,
William Mitsch and John Todd)
 Realization of Value for humans as well as for nature

What is the problem then, I am going
green.
Do you know most of the solutions
proposed for sustainability push issues to
corner, do not try to get rid of them.
Case Area
Issues Associated with current
resource consumption in Jaipur City
Jaipur city has limited fresh water resources and
Population Projections coupled with high rate of
water intensive development the current deficient will
further increase to water crisis.
Ground water is dropping at the rate of 1.7 meter per
year and the gap in demand and supply of water
further leads to groundwater extraction.
Issues Associated with current
resource consumption in Jaipur City
The footprint of Jaipur city according to the notified urban
area in current masterplan will be nearly 900 Sq.Km, lining
up the city with one of the largest such as Bangalore.
For a city in central Rajasthan where desert is next door
thing, continuous but sustainable resource mobilizations
comes into play
Existing Landuse of Jaipur
Issues Associated with current
resource consumption in Jaipur City
Demand vs Supply of water resources and
infrastructure in Jaipur
Issues Associated with current
resource consumption in Jaipur City
Over Exploitation of a single major water source.
Against Gravity Pumping from 80 KM away.
Issues Associated with current
resource consumption in Jaipur City
Ground water level Depletion in Jaipur
Ground water level is going down in Jaipur and all
the blocks except one block fall under Over
exploited category and have been notified as Dark
Zone.
Issues Associated with current
resource consumption in Jaipur City
Water Demand
The Demand of fresh water in Jaipur is ever
increasing but the sources at limited.
Water Infrastructure Stress
Issues Associated with current
resource consumption in Jaipur City
Fresh water is used for both potable and non-potable
quality uses.
