Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the future by avoiding environmental damage. It has three pillars: environmental protection, social development, and economic development. Issues like pollution, resource degradation, and land use changes threaten ecological balance. Sustainable development can be achieved by reducing pollution, poverty, and unemployment while judiciously using resources and developing renewable alternatives to fossil fuels from solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal. It recognizes humanity's responsibility as part of the environment and acknowledges the fragility of Earth's equilibrium.
2. WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT ?
Sustainable development is development that meets the
needs of the present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs without
causing environmental damage that challenges the
survival of other species and natural ecosystems.
The concept of sustainable development, although had
appeared in the 1970s, which called for the maintenance of
essential ecological processes; the preservation of biodiversity;
and sustainable use of species and ecosystems.
3. Sustainable development is categorized into 3 major pillar.
1. Environment protection- it defines how we should
study and protect ecosystems, integrity and
sustainability of resources and focusing on the
elements that place stress on the environment.
2. Social development- it is about maintaining access to
basic resources without comprising the quality of life.
For e.g. education
3. Economic development- it is about providing
incentives for business and other organization to
adhere beyond legislative requirements.
4. Why sustainable development?
Sustainable development encourages us to conserve and enhance our
resource base, by gradually changing the ways in which we develop
and use technologies.
There are certain issues which are responsible for ecological
imbalance. These issues are:
1. Pollution (air, water and soil)
2. Degradation of natural resources such as soil erosion,
deforestation, depletion of wildlife, shortage of energy,
degradation of marine ecosystems and depletion of mineral
resources
3. Alteration and inconsistent land use like the conversion of
agricultural land into industrial estates, conversion of
mangrove swamps into fishponds and salt beds.
5. Some other issues:
1. Global warming or Greenhouse effect
2. Acid Rain
3. Pollution (Air and Marine Pollution)
4. Depletion of ozone layer in the atmosphere
5. Radioactive fallout because of nuclear war
6. Waystoachievesustainabledevelopment!
•Sustainable development can be achieved by reducing
pollution, poverty, poor housing and unemployment.
• The use of non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels
should not be stopped overnight, but they must be used
efficiently and the development of alternatives should be
encouraged to help phase them out.
•judiciously use the resources that are available in plenty
and maintain them without depletion or pollution
•restrict the use of the already endangered resources and
protect them from unsustainable development.
7. •Sustainable energy is abundantly provided by the sun, the wind,
the earth’s heat, waterfalls, tides, and the growth of plants, and it
creates little or no waste or polluting emissions.
•Solar energy
•Wind energy
•Hydropower
•Geothermal
• By using these sustainable sources, we preserve the planet’s fossil
resources, such as natural gas and petroleum, the reserves of which
are naturally limited and will inevitably be exhausted.
8. Sustainable development is possible only if man stops thinking of
himself as the supreme creation and enjoys only the benefits. It is
high time man realizes that he is an integral part of the environment.
He should also realize that because he is at the pinnacle of evolution
and has also more responsibility towards maintaining the
environment.
The Earth is a complex system that exists only thanks to its
equilibrium. But Planet Earth has a fragile equilibrium. As we
exploit the planet’s resources, create pollution through our activities
and our way of life, and accelerate the extinction of certain species,
we humans are changing and threatening the Earth’s fragile
equilibrium. Sustainable development is a credible alternative, which
we must implement.
