Survey Results
Q1 – What is your age?
• I sent this survey out to every pupil in the
school so therefore I was able to see
results of what my audience likes. I asked
this question just to see what proportion
of the results were from each age group.
My research shows that the majority of
the votes came from 11-13 year olds.
Because I sent this survey out on the school VLE not as many 17-18
year olds use this, therefore not as many will have completed this
survey. Also I can only view the first 100 responses and so there
may be more results from 17-18 year olds. My main target audience
would probably the older teens.
Q2 – What type of music videos do
you prefer?
• I asked this question so
that I have an idea about
the style of music video
that my audience prefer. In
my questionnaire I
explained what each style
meant so that they weren’t
just clicking a random
answer. My results
concluded that people
preferred a mixture style
music video.

From my results it shows that 12
people like a performance video;
26 people like a narrative video;
62 people like a mixture video.
This concludes that I should do a
mixture video .
Q3 – Do you watch music videos?
• I asked this question
to see how many
people watch music
videos. My results
concluded that the
majority of people
that took the survey
(89%) do watch
music videos. This
shows that a music
video is vital for a
song and a lot get
watched.

Q4 – Do you watch every music video
for each song you listen to?
• I asked this question just
to see how important
having a music video for
a song was. The results
show that 4% of people
do watch every music
video for every song
that they watch. My
next question then
asked how often people
watch music videos.

Q5 – How often do you watch music
videos?
• I asked this question so that I could
see how important music videos are
to my target audience. This question
was an open question so that I could
get an honest answer from them.
My answers show a very varied set
of results. Out of my whole survey, it
showed that 13 people watch music
videos every day. Some of these said
that they watch a couple everyday.
This shows how significant a music
video is nowadays. One of my other
responses was quite interesting
aswell – ‘When there are meaningful
lyrics’. I interpret this to be that the
person will go and watch the music
video just to see if the video is as
good as the song and to see what
message is portrayed.

With these answers I also got some which I couldn’t
place into a category. This is because the answer would
be different for everyone. Here are the other answers:
. When watching music channels on TV (2 people)
. When watching you tube (2 people)
. When there are meaningful lyrics
. When a good song comes out
. When they are bored
. If it’s the only way to hear a song
. Half of the time that they listen to music
Q6 – How important is it that the
music video links with the lyrics?
• I asked this question to see if
people thought that the music
video should link with the
lyrics or whether the music
video could be about
anything. However the result
showed that the video was
important (58%) to link with
the lyrics and this is what I
shall do. Despite the result I
was always going to make a
video that linked with the
lyrics because that is what I
like.

Q7 – What do you like to see in a
music video?
This question that I asked was an open style question.
This was so that I got an honest view from my audience
instead of them just picking a random answer. I now
know what my audience like and what things I could put
in my music video. I got a very varied set of results.
From results I can see that people like a music video to
contain a storyline, the artist and some form of dancing.
I also got some results which were only said once so I
have not included these on my chart.

costumes and comedy.
Some other things that I found was people
liked it to be something relatable or have a
meaning behind it; something modern,
interesting, clever and exciting.
One person even said that they like
professional performance that has a
meaning behind it.
Some other things that were said is that the
music video should be interesting, have
good effects (maybe some slow motion),
interesting way of filming so that its
something that stands out. What was also
said was that I should have strong
performers and have innovative shots from
a range of angles.
I also had one weird comment that said
about things being destroyed. However I
don’t think that this is right and therefore I
wont listen to this comment.
Q8 – What don’t you like to see in a
music video?
I also asked this question in an open style way
to get an honest view. This question was the
opposite of the last question. This was of
significance because I now know what not to
include.

relevance to the song and mustn’t include any
content that is explicit or uncomfortable to watch.
People also said that they don’t like to see the artist
just singing - there has to be more to it and also not
just have one scene in the music video.
There were some things that were said just once.
Some of this includes:
There shouldn’t be any talking over the song or at
the beginning. One person said that they don’t like
close ups of the artist. I shouldn’t use repetitive
shots or include anything that is gory or scary. I
should have storyline to my music video, but not
have a clichéd ending or romance plots. I should
not include bad or oversung lip syncing.
One thing that I thought was interesting was that
someone said that they don’t like scenes in clubs or
bars – I wasn’t going to use this anyway.
Some people also said things about the camera
work – there shouldn’t be bad camera angles and I
need to make sure that the camera is still.
Q9 – What are some of your favourite
music videos?
• The reason behind me asking this question is so that I can see what
type of music video my audience like. By asking this it means that I
can go and watch these music videos and get inspiration from what
type of music video to make. As you can imagine the answers that I
got were very varied and different.
• The music videos will have had a high budget so therefore I can’t
meet the standard that they are.
• Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift’s music videos seem to be very popular.
• Little Mix – Black Magic and Sia – Chandelier also seemed to be a
popular music video.
• Some other music videos are: Fight Song – Rachel Platten; Let it go
– James Bay; Sugar – Maroon 5; Hello – Adele; Thriller – Michael
Jackson.
• There were also a lot of music videos said that I haven’t even heard
of. Some include: Marilyn Manson, Alice, Twenty One Pilots, BTS
and EXO.
Q10 – Have you heard of Josie Nelson?
This question is a vital part of my
questionnaire. Because we had to
find an artist that wasn’t well
known I thought that I would ask
this question. My results
concluded that 96% of the people
surveyed didn’t know my chosen
artist. This is good because people
won’t know what the artist is like
and it also means that making the
music video is a little bit easier for
me.

Overall, what have I learnt?
• From conducting my survey I have learnt many things about my
music video – what people like to see, what people don’t like to see
and some music videos that I should look at to get an idea of what
my audience like.
• I have learnt that a mixture style music video is the most popular. At
the moment I don’t have an idea what my music video is going to
be, however I shall keep this in mind.
• It is important that the music video links with the lyrics. I cant just
make any random video and just add a song to it – not that I was
going to that!
• People like to see a storyline, the artist and some form of dancing in
a music video. The music video has to be interesting and have good
actors and performers in it.
• People don’t like something that is irrelevant to the song or just see
an artist do a live performance, play an instrument or just sing – I
wasn’t planning on doing this anyway!
