This document summarizes research on surge protection devices called superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs). SFCLs can limit fault currents faster than conventional circuit breakers. There are three main types of SFCLs - resistive, inductive, and bridge-type. The document focuses on resistive SFCLs, which function by turning superconducting elements resistive during faults to absorb fault current energy. Resistive SFCLs can be installed in transformer circuits, feeder circuits, or bus sections to protect downstream equipment from excessive fault currents. Simulation results showed resistive SFCLs can effectively limit faults within one cycle to improve power system stability.
